Changing commander name on xbox

Keep it as gamertag, if people changed there names all the time the tags on first discoveries would mean nothing, i have been out in deep space exploring and came across a wolf-rayet star and managed to track down the user on the forum to show some screenshots.

Also i like to ram users in CG with stupid gamertags, they deserve it

And can you name a game that isn't free to play?

Ark: Survival Evolved. You have the choice of an in-game name that is different from your gamertag. The default setting is that other players see this name, instead of your gamertag. Actually, I think the only way to see their gamertag is through in-game text chat if you set that as an option. (As in, you have to manually set it show gamertags in text chat.)

I remember Sunset Overdrive poking good fun of gamertags with the quote 'My name? It floats above my head in multiplayer, but I can never see it.'

What has that to do with the fact that this is proof that Microsoft doesn't disallow custom names in multiplayer games?
If you want to sponsor me, I can buy every multiplayer XBox game available and find that out for you.

I never made the argument that it's disallowed, I just pointed out that you were wrong about Mass Effect, and you were. You're putting out some weak F2P or Alpha examples so you've got a terrible argument thus far; not taking into account the network types and necessity of matchmaking and other features.

If I cared, I'd probably look into it, but this thread's question was answered long before you dragged it off-topic.

Yes I was wrong about Mass Effect. Haven't played it in ages, and had a wrong idea about it. So I used two examples that are more fresh in my mind (last time I played ST:O was about 6 hours ago).

My initial participation in this thread was to refute a post that Microsoft doesn't allow custom names in MP games. That is wrong. However I understand why companies prefer to use the GT: already has been verified that is not vulgar (and if it is, is reported and Microsoft takes care of it), and is unique. Less hassle for the developer.

Weak F2P? To each it's own I reckon. And neither Neverwinter or ST:O are alpha. They are both far from perfect, but then again, which game is there without fault?

I quite like my moniker, it's always been Mole HD on PC, Xbox and back to PC again...but I've been known as 'Mole' for over 30 years. The nickname was given to me by my mates in the Army and it stuck...so it's not just an online handle. Adding a silly name Gamertag always comes back to haunt you at some point...I know of a few among my friends list who seriously wish they had been sober or in an adult frame of mind when they first registered it.

The 'HD' (High-Definition) was added in the 90's playing competitive online clan matches in Tribes 2 on PC.

Im not a Xbox player but i Agree you Should have a different CMDRs name from your XBOX TAG if you want

tobe honest i dont understand microsofts need to control these things there tracking you by your xbox account anyway whats a ingame name to them

ESO and Neverwinter allow in game names. So does Dark Souls 3.

Then xbox version happened and people found out that their promised unique name wasn't unique anymore because xbox gamer tags meant xbox players could take your name. Many were really angry about this broken promises.
Their was a very small minority that was upset that their super original name of "Han Solo" was not that unique anymore.

Yep ofc, but that's not how XBox Live works so the Elite forum isn't the place to have it changed ;)

As stated above, this is not a Microsoft issue, several multiplayer games have been named in wich you can have a different name. This is a developper decision to not support this type of option.

So... I just setup another account and it will leach off my main for gold.? Would I be able to play ED on this leach account.? I'd love another CMDR without having to buy multiples of everything.

Yes, it's due to how Microsoft have implemented Home Xbox. My family all have their own Xbox Accounts (and Gamertag's) on our Xbox One and everyone has access to all the games on that console.

BUT each account is separate, so for ED you'll be starting from scratch in a Sidewinder on any new Xbox account.

On your home console every account shares the home account's gold (multiplayer privileges only, Games with gold and discounts are not shared), and can access all the games of the home account too.

This is great. How I did not know this.
Right. Another CMDR will be up and running real soon.
I'm very happy today.

Yup! Another gamertag and it can use the Gold and the games on your current XBox, so you can have as many saves as you'd like gamer tags :)
