Changing commander name ?

This is my first ever time posting on a forum so my way of asking this must seems strange but:

I was wandering if frontier would ever consider giving the ability to the player to change their commander name ?

I feel like it would be a great little possibility to prevent having to start over on an alt. It could be in the commander customisation screen or something like that.

I even feel like it would still be nice even if it was a customisation that you would pay arx for.

That is just an idea I had but I do think it would be a good thing. Thoughts ?

AFAIK you can contact customer support & they'll do it for you, although there are limitations (frequency, number of times).

I'm too committed to my savegame to consider resetting now but Cmdr Riverside was already taken when I started & I'd like to have one that's closer to that. we can check whether a Cmdr name is already taken just by searching the social tab in the game, if I found an acceptable one that was available being able to change it (potentially with the same frequency restrictions as customer support use) in-game would be good, just as I can do already for my ships & carriers.

As mentioned, there are two ways to change a CMDR name, a complete reset or asking support (limited times).

The one thing that may be forgotten, is that discoveries etc will keep the original name.

I am not sure how the likes of 3rd party tools are affected.

One reason for not allowing at will name changes, may be to prevent a CMDR attacking others and then changing name to escape justice.

I think it is correct that we can't change name, barring a few special cases. When you play the game for a long time, as most CMDRs tend to do in Elite, you become known as your alias and you have a long-standing track-record in-game, from discoveries to past encounters or alliances. Changing names would break that character-building. It is sim, not a game, so the avatar has more importance than in other MMO where it is just a random name. As an example, I used to have many holo-me for my CMDR and change from time to time but at some point I stopped that altogether and never touched it again, because other CMDRs know me by my standard holo-me. Having one alias and having to stick to it reinforces immersion and RPG by forcing you to think about how your actions will influence your reputation/perception. It is important, as it adds "responsability".

I asked support about that, when I made an alt and got really annoyed at it(internally, not at them). They fixed it for me so only the starting letters of each part of the name are upper case, and it doesn’t appear to fall into the ‘name change’ boundary either.

(Not that it would’ve mattered in this case as I already knew exactly what to call it.)

Why the game is not case sensitive in the name input box is beyond me. Especially when it clearly has to have been at some point in the past.

I paid close attention to it when creating my alt that I was neither holding down shift, nor that caps lock was active.

It still showed up in all caps.

If i understand correctly, if I want/need to change my commander name I have to ask customer support ?
It will only change my current name and not delete my current commander right ?

I don't know if this question is going to sound weird but: how do I ask to change my commander name to customer support ?
Do i just send them something like: I want my commander name to be changed to [...] ?

You raise a ticket on frontiers website. I don't have a link handy but if you Google 'frontier support' you'll get there.
