Changing drives for the game

I didn't see an option in the launcher to change the drive path for the game.

Due to Odyssey needing 60GB I will have to move Elite to another drive and am thinking I will need to do a fresh download of Horizons as well. Other than key binds are there any files/folders that need to be copied over (saves etc)?

I generally backup (and therefore move every time I change drive, which happened a couple times already) the whole "...\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous" folder.
It contains all the bindings, graphics settings, UI settings and various logs (including the visited systems, since those are saved locally and not on the servers, so if you reinstall you lose all the blue dots - I have learnt it the hard way).
The info is also shared between the various accounts and platforms (I have Steam and Epic) so that one folder covers everything.

Does the new dlc actually require 60 gig in addition to the number of gigs ED requires or does it simply rewrite ED meaning ED, Horizon and the new dlc require 60 gigs.

Just select the root folder and copy it to the new drive in the SteamLibrary\steamapps\common

If you don't have steam on the other drive just make the folders, still will pick it up

example down below,
D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common

"key binds are there any files/folders that need to be copied over (saves etc)" will be still on your main drive,
no need to copy them to the new drive.

Saves are saved online, so there are no worries there, just make a backup of the Bindings, for future peace of mind.

When you fire up elite, you will need to register again.

After that, you're free to play anytime.

Cool, that's the folder I was looking for. Thanks!

I figure if I just delete the main .exe the launcher will ask for a d/l path and I can redirect it to the other drive. Maybe. Or could I just move the game over manually and then tell the launcher the new path when it goes looking for the game at the old location.

Hmmm, maybe.

I wish we all knew that answer but FD never gives every detail that we would like them to. :)
Which version are you using? FD, Steam or Epic?

My EDH is installed via the FDEV client installer. My EDLaunch is installed to the folder:

D:\Frontier\EDLaunch

When I installed the game I installed that to the following folder, just so it wasn't sitting under "products" folder in the above. I can't remember how I managed to specify this folder, maybe the first time I install EDH it prompted me.

D:\Frontier\Games

Anyway. Looking at the folder

D:\Frontier\EDLaunch\Products

I see ONE file in there called "elite-dangerous-64.rdr" which I can open in notepad - and in that file it only has ONE line of text which is the folder:

D:\Frontier\Games

I'm guessing ".rdr" means redirect. So If you don't get an option to install the game to a different drive, maybe you can install it into Products as normal, then just move the files manually to another folder, create the above text file with the path in it. That "might" work.

EDIT....

As a test I deleted my "products folder with the redirect file in it" so EDH is no longer installed....

Clicking the "options" menu at the top, you can specify an installation folder:

Once you select that installation directory, the "products" folder is created and the RDR file mentioned above is created.

Next click the large INSTALL button and EDH will be installed to the selected folder.

Once EDO becomes live, I think that might be going into the same main folder, but won't know until it's released. :)

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately the .rdr file doesn't exist on my system for whatever reason but putting that string into a search engine sent me to a necro thread here that has some useful tips and experiences in it that should prove useful. All is not lost yet.

Excellent, hope the other thread helps. When I deleted the file on my machine, the "options" menu had the option to select install directory, after selecting the directory the file was created. It's just a text file so I'm sure you could create it manually.

If you installed into the default folder it probably doesn't need the file since it already knows where the game files are.

So as I was going along with my afternoon farm chores I was thinking about this thread and something you wrote popped into my head and gave me an "Ah ha" moment.

Directory ------- (toggle DOS flashback moment)

So I thought to myself how I would handle all of this in DOS back in the day. Copy files to new dir, rename old dir as a backup, rewrite .bat file for new location. So simple.

So that's what I did. I copied everything over to the other SSD, renamed the old dirs to Funtime Developments and fired up the launcher. It asked for an install directory, I provided it and it did the rest, essentially rewriting its batch file and syncing up. No large download required. The launcher did rewrite two directories back on C:\ to the tune of about 17MB with some logs and such and the newly necessary .rdr file pointing it to E:\Frontier.

The game runs and I can now free up 20GB on my system drive.

Thanks for making me stop over analyzing the problem and realizing the simple route.

Directory - Yea, I'm an old DOS user sorry about that. At work I do mix it up between that and folder and get funny looks from the younger developers (hahaha kids these day).

Really glad it helped.
