Changing tasks when in VR

Hi all.

Just got my new Oculus Rift. This means that now I am simply not willing to play anything out of VR, even if I miss doing side activities, such as taking notes to a log, checking Radio Sidewinder, etc...
How do you guys deal with that? Is all of it over, or do you interact with 'the other' world while playing E : D in any way?

I've been loving VR, don't get me wrong, but I had no problem taking off the HMD and doing other stuff when I took a passenger mission requiring me to visit a tourist beacon some 600k LS out in a system.

Edit: make sure you try out V. Once you get the hang of it, it's really useful for things like EDDB and Coriolis while in VR, not to mention Hulu etc.

I picked up OVRDrop for $14 and it is a "must have" for providing a "window" into other apps running on the PC. Basically, I have a three monitor setup and Vive (for VR). On monitor 1, I run TCE and G19, while on Monitor 3 I run Chrome with EDToolbox and EDEngineer. Via VoiceAttack, I can say "browser on" and a 50% transparent window opens just beyond my throttle and covering my Navigation panel (with transparency, I can still see my Nav panel, etc...). With one vive controller sitting between my throttle/stick, and keyboard off to left, I can easily operate within the OVRDrop window for using TCE, G19 (via Monitor 1) and , EDToolbox via its own instance on monitor 3. Its quite nice with all this running in VR and available within the VR space. I am running a 1080ti and i5 7600 so beef is there, but all runs quite well. Never have to take my headset off, even for using the keyboard (though this is due to no need to see keyboard to type... i feel for the F/J key bumps, and its all good from there).

Bottom line, recommend OVRDrop for giving you access to these apps in the VR space in a immersive feel that fits. Bonus, if you have VoiceAttack, makes it nice to hide/show the OVRDrop window as needed.

also hot tip: if you use a "monitor" view in OVRDrop, recommend using a plain black background on monitor.

V is still just too buggy and costs to much performance IMO.
Drop only works with steamvr, and if you have a ridt, you much rather not use stramvr for elite, significantly degraded performance.

I currently use voiceattack to change between ED and bigscreen, a virtual desktop environment, on demand.
It still is very lowres for desktop work, but you can manage music playlists or check eddb, Google etc etc.

I used to keep running. But voiceattack can launch and close processes via commands just as easily as lowering landing gears or pausing music playback.

So now if I need to Google something I just say "launch virtual desktop" And inside 5 seconds I have my desktop view in front of me.
When done I can use a voice commands to focus back on ED and close the BigScreen process.

If I want to watch netflix i go watch Netflix in my big comfy chair.

OVRdrop isn't an optimal solution for us Rift users. I hope the OP tries out V for themselves; I haven't experienced many bugs or performance issues myself.

I occasionally slide the HMD up my head to browse or drink coffee or such, otherwise I mainly have something on in the background that I listen to and just go with it :)

Something ive been wishing for since alpha though is both an ingame browser and an ingame mp3/internet radio player integrated into the ships cockpit. That would have been so sweet and give even more the sensation of living within the game!

Thank you!

To my surprise, there are indeed options that I'll test. Next time we see each other in a station, beers are on me.
