News Chapter Four - Exploration Reveal

So after 4 years of your secret hidden stuff not being found you finally realised that pilots were not going to spend 2 weeks scanning a single planet with their eyeballs while flying over the surface? Interesting. And here we are in 2018 on Earth building a telescope capable of discovering life on a planet 35 light years away from Earth.
Mmmmm. Only 400 billion systems to go. My eyeballs....my eyeballs....aaaagh.
About time.
We need that codex. We need it now.
Edit:don't you think if you had this day one things might be a little different now?

USS will continue to expire and spawn at set intervals.

We aren't presenting any new information on the stellar bodies, but the new tools provide earlier and easier access to data we already presented in the system map.
Can we please haz stellar metallicity and directional movement angle and speed in relation to the galactic core?

I'm assuming this feature will be turned off during beta, yes? Otherwise it will be only "Giving all players on PC" the opportunity to grab those "First Mapped" tags inside the Bubble.

Beta runs on different servers! so no data transferred into released game

There will be ammo, but at Lavecon FDev said it would be synthesised with a commonly occurring planetary material.

Perfect, hell of a lot better then having it only something you can buy at stations. Besides, I don't mind taking the SRV out once in a while and collecting resources, at the same time going for a joy ride.

So how will engineering work with the DSS now launching probes? Will we have to 'grandfather' our modules over for the DSS? Will the engineering recipes for these modules change such as the fast scan, long range etc. etc.?

It will take some time to suppress the habitual honk every time I enter any system.

Apart from that, how close do you need to be to a planet for the DSS to work, and can those probes be started from normal space? If you need to get pretty close to a planet for it to work, you're still travelling at significant speed in supercruise. Going into an orbit in normal space may be good for muh 'mershn and not crashing into the exclusion zone while caromming probes all over the place.

Oh, and does the honk still give enough information for basic navigation, i.e., targeting something on the system map even if it's just a generic blob?

The DSS is a supercruise only module, we are balancing the range at which it can be used to make it a satisfying experience.

The Beta usually runs on a different instance and doesn't get integrated into the main game. So anyone who gets the "First Mapped" in the beta won't keep it in the "live" game.

At least that's how it worked with chapter 1 beta. All the engineering unlocks I did in beta were lost when it went live. Note: FDev made that pretty clear before I tried out the beta.

I was wondering about that, currently, the ADS does that work and though not much effort to drop into a nav beacon could the 'upgraded' ADS now not automatically pull data from the nav beacon as you jump in and honk?

That's a decent point.

If the system HAS a nav beacon, would it not make sense that the ADS could interrogate it without having to drop into the nav beacon instance?

Deep space explorers will no doubt want to spam thousands of probes. They will stay in the black for weeks and months. Probes therefore need to be easy to synthesize in decent quantities. Say 100 per recipe use. Hence easy for commanders to be able to store materials for thousands of probes.

QUESTION: Are you looking into the possibility down the line for future probe variants, eg ones that can be engineered to last longer, fly further reveal more information, perhaps provide targeting information to highlight weakpoints when attacking future potential thargoid/guardian bases etc?

Ok I'm probably in a minority of one, but... please could there be an option to disable the honk sound?

With all the great work the audio team have done this is the most out of place and ridiculous ship sound ever.

It turns my high tech multimillion cr spaceship into the equivalent of a Circus Clown Car (pamp pamp)

Given the amount I play in VR it would be great to get confirmation this works in VR. Granted I don't see a reason why not, even Holo-Me works great in VR. Still no harm checking.

DSS ammo synth that requires landing on a body has got to go, or a few small ships will no longer be able to be fitted for exploration, including the players' starter ship.

Overall, these changes sound very nice.

One big question you didn't touch upon - what about that combined class 2 or 3 ADS+DSS module so you don't have to spend like 2 class 4 slots for these class 1 modules?

Now for some specific points from the post:

Because explorers ply their trade far from civilized space, we’ve decided to not add new module requirements. Instead, we’re improving the discovery scanner and detailed surface scanner so Commanders can jump right in as soon as the update is released, without having to spend time traveling back to a port to purchase new gear.

Hooray for that!

As you move the view around, you are aiming your discovery scanner sensors.

How do you move the view around? Turn the ship? One of the most annoying things for me is that ships that turn slowly are so terrible at exploration because it takes ages to just point them at a planet to scan. I'd love to turn my Cutter into an explorer but its low agility makes that an utter chore.

Along with the Exploration update, we are improving the way that USSs work. USSs will now spawn throughout the entire system when you first enter it. This enables you to use the new exploration tools to find USSs throughout the system, not just in the area around you. You can still interrogate nav beacons to find the locations.

Whilst USSs do still have a decay time, the timers have been increased to allow you time to find and fly to the ones you are interested in. The decay time is also now displayed when targeted. Signal sources still obey rules determining where they can appear within a system, and mission critical signal sources will still be highlighted to differentiate themselves once located.

Do I interprete this correctly that new USS will also spawn while you are in the system? Please don't tell me you have to relog to generate new USS once you have exhausted the current ones (or found none of them of interest).

You will be able to synthesise micro-probes for the detailed surface scanner, but the better aim you are, the less probes you will need to get complete coverage.

So... not reusable? Massive, massive disappointment for me. I hate that about limpets already, and am not at all a fan of this for exploration, too. So far I have always brought both scanners with me even on hybrid loadouts, to be able to spontaneously explore some systems, but I am not sure whether I really want to bother with these DSS limpets just for that. Le sigh.

Now this may yet redeemable if you tell me that these don't require a cargo bay, have a large (e.g. 100) capacity built into the scanner and are very cheap to synthesize. I don't want this to a) exclude small explorers (e.g. Adder) which cannot afford to have a cargo bay, nor b) turn into mostly a grind to refill your DSS drones/limpets, nor c) make you reluctant about engaging the DSS in the first place if you are unsure whether a planet might hold something of interest or value, lest you waste a drone for little in return.

Will there be any extra rewards for planets with unusual sites on them?

Also, will POIs on the map only consist of plant/barnacle, guardian, and thargoid sites? Or will mining depots, crashed ships, and crashed satellites also be listed?

Do we have to land on a planet to see what a poi actually is or is it told to is via the DS scanner?

And finally, will other space anomalies (such as transmitters, mega and generations ships, and the fabled space lighting shown at Lavecon) be shown as signatures on our discovery scanner?

Overall, i really like these ideas. Just know that this is a great step in the right direction!
