Ship customisation is definitely in, not just paintjobs, but different equipment will change the look of your ship as well

I believe that at release, you will not see your character as you will be in your ship doing everything so if you want to change your appearance just shut your eyes and use your imagination
At initial release that may be true but what about the walking about expansion? (can't remember if it's first or second) We don't know if it's first person ( in which case you still can't see yourself) or third person. Either way people would probably like some input in how they are represented in the gaming world.
You'd need customisation regardless of whether you could see yourself or not, because everyone else will be able to see you, it might get a little confusing if we all look the same
