charge ecm

Possible stupid question(s).
I've been re-doing my button mapping and I saw the charge ecm option.
How useful is this to need mapping? As I thought, probably wrongly, that ecm was automatically used.
Also when is ecm superior to chaff?

The ecm kills limpets and disables missile/torpedo lock (+ making them veer off course). It needs to be charged and released (the longer you charge the larger the area of effect and required sys capacity).

It does not compare to chaff at all (different applications).

Welcome to fire off an ECM while someone is hitting you with gimballed lazors if you want, but you'll find it as useful as asking them nicely to stop.

Ok cool. Mostly as I suspected. However I thought chaff might prevent missiles getting a lock too, hence the question.

Chaff in our world is for confusing Missiles, just a cloud of tin foil pieces, in the Elite world it does the job of breaking the auto lock of gimballed weapons, by working in the same way and giving out multiple signatures.

So in Elite, Chaff for gimballed weapons and ECM and or Point Defence for projectiles like missiles.

Personally all my ships have Chaff canisters on one side and a Point Defence on the other, swear by it so never fit ECM as a rule.

When I'm in the bubble it's usually how I roll too. Having to hold a hotkey down sounds a little too hard to do in a dog fight. U would probably need a couple more hands to handle it.

Chaff is assigned to (1) fire group, same as weapon hard points so it auto deploys, Point Defence also is automated.... I always find I have plenty of stock for engagements till next docking again.

Personally I find the ecm difficult to judge. charge too long and the missile hits you before you release, not long enough and the missile is still out of range and not effected (then you can't charge ecm again soon enough to have another go). I use a point defence turret. It's quite effective and completely automatic.

Sounds good to me.
I'll probably leave ecm alone.

If I remember correctly back in the original 80s Elite, Electronic Counter Measures made a similar sound to Thargoids pulling you into witch space, was a long time back.

I've been playing around with ECM lately, have one fitted on FDL and courier. Still on the fence if I'm going to keep it post heat and packhound nerf but it DOES work. I believe they increased the charge speed in 2.2. I wish there was a charge speed mod for ECM at engineers instead of "light weight/reinforced/shielded". It doesn't work on dumbfires and hence, I think it's better on a small ship that's hard to hit, with limited utility mounts or a trader as it will protect you from hatch breakers.

Yeah, ECM and PD if you like. Or just stick two more A rated modded shield boosters and ignore missiles entirely. Oh and deactivate your cargo hatch to deal with hatch breakers.

ECM might see some use on small underpowered (power plant capacity) ships when you can't fit boosters. ECM recharges slower than missiles reload so you'll take out that first salvo and then cop for the rest. I don't know anyone who uses it including NPCs.

Anti missile defences just don't work ATM. It's a shame as they look cool. ECM needs to be automated or at least pre-charged with a recharge cool down like SCB's.
