Although the elite controller doesn't actually give an advantage regarding available buttons I do prefer the options for finger placement, ie the paddles on the bottom means my trigger fingers can stay on the triggers and all other functions are with thumbs and middle fingers, again all down to preference.

All the chatpad does for ed is make text comms easier really and the Elite controller is great to help with remapping but as others have said it's not four extra buttons, e.g. I have ecm and chaff mapped to bumpers to make them more accessible, throttle up and down is x and left stick click then paddles mapped to x and left stick so I can use paddles for throttle,
I know this is a bit old but I have a question for your more experiences XBOXERS out here.
The above does not work. I have stated that. You can actually assign a function to say D-PAD-R+B and it will work but the function assigned to D-PAD-R will fire along with the combination button assigned. This holds true for any non-letter button.
The question is is there anyway to make the D-PAD function like the letters buttons with a hold functionality?
Negative. The D pad is used as a selector to the press and hold buttons.
I use my d pad for a multitude of functions.
Uncoupled it does pips.
Coupled to primary fire it does heat sinks,chaff,SCBs and a spare.
Coupled to secondary fire it does all my fighter functions, deploy,formation,engage target and dock.
As a mainly combat pilot my fingers are generally on the guns so this works well but i have a fire group set with nowt on secondary so I can control my fighter with no fire.
Also a major plus with the Elite controller is mapping the throttle to the paddles,it allows very good control over the throttle.

Yes I could buy an Elite controller but it still does not add anymore functionality, it just relocates functions to the paddles and for that money I would just as well buy the PC version and use my HOTAS and forgo being able to play on the comfort of my couch!
