Ships ChatGPT Gave me Engineering Advice

I asked ChatGPT what the best engineering load-out is for shield tanking a python in Elite Dangerous and this is what it told me. Still a bit broad as it doesn't mention experimentals...but maybe with a more detailed question it could give better info. Can this be the best way to research new engineering builds now?

In Elite Dangerous, the Python is a versatile ship that can be effectively shield tanked. Here's a suggested engineering loadout for shield tanking a Python:

1. Core Internal Modules:
- Power Plant: Overcharged with the "Armoured" modification for increased durability.
- Thrusters: Dirty Drives with "Drag Drives" modification for improved maneuverability.
- Frame Shift Drive: Increased FSD range with "Increased Range" modification for better exploration capabilities.
- Life Support: Lightweight for reduced weight and improved jump range.

2. Optional Internal Modules:
- Shield Generator: Reinforced with "Augmented" modification for enhanced shield strength.
- Shield Cell Bank: Fast Charge with "Specialized" modification to quickly replenish shields in combat.
- Guardian Shield Reinforcement Packages: These can be useful for further reinforcing your shields.
- Hull Reinforcement Packages: Additional hull reinforcement can provide extra durability.

3. Hardpoints (Weaponry):
- Depending on your combat preference, you can equip a combination of pulse lasers, burst lasers, or multi-cannons for dealing damage to enemies.
- Consider engineering modifications such as "Efficient" or "Long Range" for your weapons to suit your playstyle.

4. Utility Mounts:
- Chaff Launchers: Deploying chaff can help disrupt enemy targeting and improve your survivability.
- Point Defense Turrets: These can be useful for shooting down incoming missiles and projectiles.

5. Optional Utilities:
- Shield Boosters: Engineered with "Heavy Duty" or "Resistance Augmented" modifications to enhance shield strength.
- Heat Sink Launchers: These can help dissipate excess heat generated by shield cell banks or weapons.

Remember to balance your power distribution and manage your shield cell bank usage effectively during combat. Engineering modifications provide additional benefits, allowing you to customize your loadout to your specific preferences and playstyle.

Friendly reminder that ChatGPT and their friends only parrot what is spread on the internet. Which is a) not always correct and b) at the minimum subject to discussion.

There are a few things I disagree with. For one, overcharged is a bad default choice unless you need the power. Also ChatGPT skipped the "never skip hull day, even on shield tanks" lesson.

At the end of the day, it is nothing you cannot find here or on reddit, with no checks if it makes sense. ChatGPT is a language model, not an all-knowing magic eight ball.

Can this be the best way to research new engineering builds now?

Not quite. In that list of recommendations, several are overly generic, while at least one (the overcharged PP) is almost certainly an error. That said, it may have been too limited by the constraints given; it has no insight into what is desired.

Friendly reminder that ChatGPT and their friends only parrot what is spread on the internet.

It does more than that; it is capable of weighing inputs and synthesizing statements.

Its recommendations (and output in general) still depend on the quality of the input data.

That applies to recommendations given by real people too and ChatGPT is probably competitive with most real people in separating the wheat from the chaff in areas neither are experts (or haven't had their AI model specifically trained) in. I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who also had not played the game to come up with better recommendations.

Once someone figures out how to get it to be able to play the game (it's probably not that far off real-time image interpretation), it's recommendations will get a lot better.

Anyway, my point was that what we do when making inferences is not all that different from what GPT is doing. ChatGPT just doesn't have any shame and isn't afraid to it's way through things and sound confident while it does so (I've compared it to George Santos in the past).

Yeah it is probably not the best idea to listen to random people on the internet either.

If you ask ChatGPT for an exploration build it will probably give you a min-maxed paper plane D2EA-style, because those are simply the most visible build guides and thus heavily weighted. Even if the resulting ship is rubbish ;).

I don't dismiss it, there must have been people upset when writing was invented 'cos now no-one needed to remember anything (and indeed the oral poetry tradition nosedived). I currently think of it as a way to quickly ask "What does the internet say?" while maintaining a healthy skepticism regarding what the internet says :)

For fun I asked the Bing one what a Python hull tank build would look like, and it cited this thread as one of its sources, the clever thing. It also recommended I add the "Extended Oxygen" experimental to my lightweight life support, an idea which I found quite attractive.

ChatGPT can not properly give a fit since never played this game.

Again, what he suggested has no interesting effect. Anyone who plays this game knows that.
The only good thing is that he doesn't have too obvious and big a mistake.

ChatGPT did exactly what a human can do with Goggle Fu. It simply reiterated what other Reddit and forum posters said: And relabeled to say "It came up with it" when it really did not.

I forget the exact text but read the small print at the bottom of ChatGPT, it's unintentionaly very funny. Something about how ChatGPT should not be relied on for information about people, places or FACTS. 😂 I find it's ability to understand and utilise natural language quite extraordinary but it will state completely false information with absolute certainty.

From Chat GPT:

Dear Commander Chaparral,

I hope this message finds you well in your journeys through the stars. As the Allied scientific liaison to Aegis, I am writing to extend a personal invitation to you to participate in a crucial community goal that holds immense significance for both military and scientific advancement in our ongoing struggle against the Thargoids.

As you are no doubt aware, the Thargoid capital ships, now known as Titans, have become the primary focus of our collective efforts. These colossal beings hold many secrets, yet reaching them poses considerable risks as they reside within the treacherous Maelstroms, accompanied by hostile Thargoid vessels. Despite our best attempts, obtaining meaningful data on the composition of these Titans has proven exceedingly challenging, even at close range, leaving us with more questions than answers.

However, in response to this pressing need, Aegis has embarked on an ambitious project to modify the xeno scanner developed by the esteemed Professor Ishmael Palin. This adaptation incorporates electromagnetic technology derived from pulse wave analysers, significantly broadening the scanner's range. With this innovative tool, we aim to gather comprehensive data on the Thargoid Titans, furthering our understanding of their nature and vulnerabilities.

To support this endeavor, we have established a vital supply chain to Muller Terminal in the Rabh system, where the production of the pulse wave xeno scanners will take place. It is here that I call upon you, Commander Chaparral, to lend your invaluable expertise and piloting skills to protect the trade ships carrying essential commodities for this mass-production effort. By ensuring the safe delivery of these resources, you will play a pivotal role in advancing our scientific and military objectives, and ultimately, in safeguarding humanity against the Thargoid threat.

In recognition of your dedication and commitment to the cause, Aegis will offer substantial rewards for your invaluable services. Not only will you contribute to the construction of the pulse wave xeno scanners, but you will also join a community of like-minded pilots who share a common goal—a future free from the shadow of the Thargoids.

Commander Chaparral, we stand at a critical juncture in our struggle against the Thargoids, and your participation in this community goal is of utmost importance. I implore you to answer this call, for your skills, knowledge, and bravery are needed now more than ever.

What I like about ChatGPT is pouring a lot of water and not saying anything you didn't know before.

I used the Galnet description as part of the prompt. That is probably the extent of the source material available since the current version of ChatGPT has limited access to current information (unless you have the search plug in). Things will be different with the next iteration.

Indeed - the vast majority of “AI” claimed at the moment is nothing more than fancy search engine technology with some natural language processing thrown in.

Some lf the art stuff is pretty mental, though …
