Horizons Cheapeast Setup That Can Run Horizons. Suggestions Please!

Hey guys not only am I new to ED I'm also new to PC Gaming as a whole so excuse my ignorance on the subject.. I just decided to get a gaming PC instead of a console because we're Halfway through their lifespan, and i haven't seen anything that's really impressed me. Then I found this game and completely fell in love, but I digress. Can someone help me figure out what i'll need to play this game on Ultra 100% Maxed out including planet side. (Side note: I'm also probably going to run a cheap VR rig through my Gear VR as well I don't think i'll need to make any additions to add solely for that though.) I can always upgrade it later I just want to play. Just a reminder this is supposed to be as cheap as possible. I have a TV ill probably use as a monitor. Any help is welcomed, and greatly appreciated!!

Something centered around an Intel i5-6600k and a Nvidia Geforce 970 would be what I'd recommend. It'd help with specifics if we knew your currency and region. Are you looking to DIY or purchase a pre-built?

For Ultra at 1920x1080p check my signature, a good mix (in my opinion but my motherboard is bad have that in mind) between cheap components and very good ones. Having between 120/170FPS in open space, 80FPS in rings, 60+FPS on planets all looking lovely.

Now for VR and resolutions above that you need more than that. A GPU like a 980Ti or wait for the top upcoming ones around mid year, 16GB or memory RAM with a very good CPU like the i7 6700, or hopefully the new AMD ones will be good enough since mine is still doing its job.

Since you are going to build a new PC just wait (if you can) for the new stuff...don't buy old.

Tell us how much are you willing to spend, that could help too if you want to build a PC just now.

Pretty much everything runs YouTube or Twitch.

Seriously, the specs are on the EliteDangerous.com page near the bottom. Less than that will still run, but you'll need to make compromises with graphics, etc.

I am on a RoG laptop with: i7 - 6700HQ, GTX 960M (4GB GDDR5), 8 GB RAM and I get from 20-25 fps up to 50-60fps on and around planet surfaces at High/Ultra on 1080p.

In the following days I will increase my RAM to 16 GB (for other reasons, not gaming in particular) and I suspect that the fps will increase.
I think my setup is pretty close to the lower limit of what can run Horizons on High/Ultra on 1080p consistently.

Currency : US $dollars
Region: Orlando, FL
If the price difference is significant enough than I wouldn't mind a DIY.

I'd really prefer to keep it Under $700, but i'm talking basic trinius VR nothing major. I Want to have it before June for sure.

To run VR at max settings you need really strong GPU's
700$ alone wont even be enough for the GPU's (if bought new)
Cheapest option is a new Intel I5 PC with second hand GPU's
The 970 is an ok card at 1080p but it will be a crappy card in VR due to its memory mapping.
I would go for 2 second hand 290x's as a good cheap option.
CF works ok now in E.D and the supercruise bug is gone to.

I'm running a Radeon A10 Processor alongside AMD R7 Graphics, with 8gb Ram. It cost me around £350 to build. Runs Horizons fine on high settings. I have never had an issue.

Just my 2 pence.

4770k
Asus M6H
R9 290X
16GB 2400Mhz

1440p @ ultra is great. It eats the game for breakfast @ 1080p.

If budget is more important than frames per second, go for something like this:
An intel i5 (whichever) £150~
A decent ATX motherboard (not mATX!!) ~£70
8GB Ram (ddr3 or 4 depending on your mobo)~ £55
nVidia Geforce GTX 960 (or AMD equivalent) ~£170
Decent 500w minimum PSU ~£40
ATX case (not mATX!) ~£40
A hard drive. (Ssd, hdd whatever) £??
Windows £??
DVD drive?
Keyboard and mouse, joystick etc. £??

That's far better than my pc, and I can run ED:H at 1080p, on ultra, on a TV, at around 55fps in space, or 30-45fps on a planet.
(I use 5 year old AMD HD 6870 1Gb BTW).

Hes not talking about OR VR but trinius, which works with phone apps. $700 is easily enough. I'd take care to get a good mobo so you can still upgrade later. Next-gen gpus are coming later this year, so I recommend a 750ti or such: works well with ED, its cheap and you can upgrade next year without losing hundreds of dollars.

Okay a lot of people are suggestion PCs in the somewhat mid range which I can understand but I'm gonna be far more direct and answer your exact question. If you really want to low ball it and get an alright starter pc that will run Elite then what you could do is go the AMD route.

This is my old build that runs ED just fine at 1080p

AMD A10-5800K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor
MSI A78M-E35 Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard
Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (okay I've been meaning to throw the second stick of ram in but never got around to it. still worked fine just slightly slower)
Gigabyte Radeon R7 370 4GB Video Card (This card was cheaper at the time when I bought it and there are other versions of the same GPU that might be cheaper. just rememer Radeon 370 when shopping and you'll be fine)
Corsair CX600M power supply
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (Hard drives are more what you want or need for storage. I'd go bigger if you can afford it or use an SSD along with a 2 or 3 TB if you can fit it in your budget but again that's more what what you want to do. just have a hard drive.)

That's my old build. I am upgrading some of those parts at the moment but that'll get you off the ground. When I bought all those parts it cost me a little under $600 USD but some of those parts have gone up in price since then. If you really want to push it a bit and save up for a better GPU the on board graphic on that processor had the base game of Elite running for me on low settings at 720p at 60 fps. Didn't look as impressive as the full build (kinda looked like a old ps2 game) but I could still play. I'd still add the GPU though. You'll need it for other games as well. Hope that helps. :)

Could you upgrade it enough later on to run VR?

Well around what FPS planet side is something like that gettting?

I'd like to spend as little as possible but keep it upgradeable and running horizons on Max. So like I side this is all foreign to me. 750ti is what part? lol

Oh dear, I've arrived, with my crazy exotic hardware.
So... take a Dell PowerEdge 2950 gen 1... a hacksaw, a GTX650T (not Ti) from a friend, add the RAM pack, and a sound card. Result:
Spent on the computer $300, runs Horizons. I build this system mostly from scrap. You do what you can when you have less than $50 after bills.

My Asus Transformer T100TA is a 32bit OS so can't run Horizons itself.

I built a i5-6600 (not the K as I wasn't going to OC and its cheaper) , GTX 960, an asus H110 plus MB, 16gb ram, 250 SSD (retained case/psu from old pc) and seems to work fine on Ultra. (at HD). Could have gone for the 970 but decided for HD gaming the 960 was strong enough. (was about £480 - not much use to you as UK prices are always (a lot ) higher than US prices).

$700 USD is pushing it, but browsing Newegg.com eyeballing some prices I got close. You still need to procure Windows and peripherals (monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers) with this setup. I might suggest watching some PC build guide videos if this is your first time.
