PSVR might be desirable for the ease of use, but if you're wanting to play ED, a HOTAS is mandatory in VR. The PS4 is not going to support an X55...

Also - Room scale is really really fun, and I'm not entirely sure the PS is going to support that. Also every time I've owned a Sony device, which have been too many to mention, they've gone out of their way to make it a closed, value added, platform.

There's some decent demos and Unity based stuff out there which is worth experiencing in VR - and the best way to do that is on a PC rather than a closed console platform imho.

@OP - if you want to save some cash, you don't need anything more than a 4Gb 970 - I'm running that and both the Rift and Vive are flawless for VR apps - the one exception is the Vive for ED, but if you want it mainly for ED - I'd recommend the Rift. If you want room scale, get the Vive, but note that in ED it's currently miles behind the Rift quality wise.

The CV1 is has already been purchased by my better half at the start of the year so it's either sell it when it arrives late May or build a PC - the latter appeals since after all the rift was a present (-:

I've just found this interesting and sensible article - prices are in dollars but I might be able to find equivalent parts at a good price here in the UK:

I have to say that with the latest 1.6/2.1 beta I'm more confident than ever that the GTX970 is the card to beat. Frontier have done an amazing job optimising the graphics pipeline. I can run everything on high or ultra AND at 1.5x SS and it's butter smooth - even when landing at a surface installation. Previously these were a judder fest even at 1.0xSS !

I really WANT one of the new GTX1080s but TBH I think it's going to be a while before Elite requires or even justifies one. It's great to know that there's plenty of headroom now - I honestly think that these next gen cards will be able to drive 2x the resolution of current get HMDs in Elite. Can't wait for the next round of VR headsets !

Now the GTX1070 has been announced, if the price rumours are true, it would be the card to go for. So much bang for the buck it's unreal!

Wow. I'd been running in high / ultra (no SS) with my DK2 and occasionally got a hiccup hitting surface stations with my 970. I just got my CV1 yesterday, and found it unplayable hitting a busy surface station. I figured the extra fill-rate required by the CV1 for the added resolution and framerate took things over the edge. It's great to hear it works well for you with 2.1. I'll fire up the 2.1 beta and see how things go.

Yeah ive got the cash sitting ready to go the day that bad boy comes out. Managed to resist the urge to buy a 980Ti over the last couple of months (wasnt easy !)

The CV1 is great with the 970 but im dying to crank the settings up a bit...

OMG... the brown UPS van has delivered a box from Oculus.... I think the box contains the CV1 my 'better half' ordered at launch but wait..... I haven't built a PC to plug it into
A crying shame I don't know anyone with a PC powerful enough to run it[sad] Looks like I'll have to find out whether I can buy a GTX1070/1080 et al' here in the UK before opening the box:D

Don't suppose I could open the box and plug it into my iMac for a demo mode or something....? naah that's not gonna work

Ooooh what to do?

Place it on a shelf in your living room and pay homage to it until you get a PC. You can get some decent deals on prayer mats on ebay.

Semi future proof budget PC component list

The CV1 has been delivered, the box opened to see if there’s anything in it - YES, all ok but no PC to plug it all into yet!
Could the list below be a good build to last a while?

Asus Z170-DELUXE Desktop Motherboard @ £224.90 - Hopefully will last many upgrades....
https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-Z170-DELUXE-Asus-Motherboards/dp/B0126R1XNM
the ‘frequently bought together’ lists; cpu and Ram @ £567.88)

Game Max Silent Sound Proofed Gaming Case for PC @ £45.99 - is this any good?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Game-Max-Silent-Proofed-Gaming/dp/B017LXAEPO

Power supplies seem to be a bit confusing… I need quiet and then capable followed by the lowest possible price. Corsair, BeQuiet and Silverstone seem popular choices… and then there’s EVGA!
EVGA SuperNova P2 850 W Platinum Fully Modular Power Supply Unit @ £123.21
https://www.amazon.co.uk/EVGA-Super..._UL160_SR160,160_&refRID=BM9WG8PM1PJ8BA8Q869B

A GTX1070 (when it’s released) seems like a better option than the expense of the 1080 for CV1 VR

Can't wait to plug the CV1 into a computer.. so any advice on a semi future proof budget PC would be warmly received ;)

That will run the CV1 like a dream.

Dont get too bogged down in the arms race. If you match the Oculus minimum spec for the CV1 then you will have a great VR experience.

Skylake board will future proof you, you can plug tons of goodies into the Z170 boards and the 6 series chips overclock amazingly well and run quiet and cool.

1070 is going to be the card that powers VR for the masses over the new generation (970 is currently the top card on steam, lots of horsepower at a bargain price)

I would recommend looking at Corsair for your Case, Memory, CPU cooling, SSDs and any other bits you can cram in there. Cant recommend their gear highly enough.
