Newcomer / Intro Chieftain hardpoint question, general Hull tanking question and rank question

For the Maia trip you could just switch to a Hauler if you’re cash starved.
A Hauler with an A rated FSD and everything else D rated can jump around 30ly, usually makes it in 20ish jumps.

Was running a Chief recently but I was trying to do CZ in one, thought I had a nice set-up with my lasers and multi’s but it was taking forever for things to drop. Switched to all overcharged multicannons with auto loader/corrosive and the difference was amazing.
Seems any thermals on your ship just slow you down in CZ these days.
I’ve upgraded to a Krait2 with the same setup.

The Fed and Alliance ships are built to be hull tanks, you can however change them into nice shield tanks with guardian shield boosters, but that’s probably a discussion best had after you get through your initial engineering phase.

I wasn't aware that the Chieftain was a hull tank until after I bought it. In fact I didn't know Hull tanking was a thing. I know you can't compare Eve Online to this, but I played that game for several years and shield tanking was my prefered way to tank in that game. I think maybe that line of thinking has stayed with me because i feel I would rather shield tank than Hull tank. But we'll see as I continue learning more.

I don’t enjoy hull tanking one bit, if they can hit your hull they can hit your modules. I play ironman (no insurance claims, clear save upon death)) so it’s not a risk I’m willing to take. My Chief shields were running at about 1000mj.
If you do up the defences on some of the medium ships though they can become impressively tanky. Classically the Fed ships can take a huge amount of punishment and just keep trucking with little concern.
I ran a FAS a year or so ago with a repair limpet controller and it could stay in a RES for hours healing itself up.

On hybrid/hull tanks biweave shields may fall and return many times in one fight.
On a straight shield tank they take too long and you won't have much armor underneath in most cases.
Also without SCBs you have quite a bit more power overhead.

That said FDL is the meta combat ship for good reasons, it's shields being one.
