Ships Chieftain performance

So I bought the chieftain and absolutely love it. Such a beautiful ship in my opinion and I bought plenty of decals for it. But after a while of fitting and flying I have come to... Somewhat regret my decision... As much as I love the combat the shields are just to weak to be of any use and u seem to be supposed to hull tank. But that's no fun taking damage especially to your modules. I feel the small hard points are really silly and feel just.... Underwhelming for such a combat focused ship. Maybe a few less small points for another large hard point? Also the utilities were very dissapoining with only 4 I feel it should have 5 or 6 as the shields are useless and should be at 1300 I think would be perfect. Defence with this heavy fighter needs improvements most of all. I mean don't you just expect a title like that to have good defence "heavy". Please let me know what you think I'm genuinely curious.

I fly a Viper Mk IV, even though I has monies for bigger combat ships. I took a look at Chieftain, and the Federales, yet chose to stay with the engineered pest I have.

I can believe the shields being so weak is annoying, but as I am mostly used to just two utility slots (or four, in the case of a bounty hunting Python), I do not feel your pain that strongly. Six slots would be God mode in my eyes, man!

@ OP I reckon it's a matter of managing expectations TBH, after all the Chieftain is a sub 20 mil ship with a weapons array that's placed around halfway between the FAS and the Python, the shield performance is similarly placed (better than a FAS but less than a Python) and so on, considering its price point it's bordering on being OP.

I think part of the issue you're having is down to finding an optimum build, I know I'm still playing around with the weapons array (laser/cannon, laser/rail, laser/PA .......) as to shields my usual approach is Bi-Weave + resistance boosters but perhaps the reinforced + heavy duty build might be better suited, give it some time and I believe more optimised builds will become available.

6A shield (reinforced) + 4 HD boosters 1400 MJ +

I use 6C Bi-Weave with two ResistAug and one Heavy Duty for my boosters. 768Mj so far with hilarious regen rates and resistances!

I get almost 600mj out of 6c bi-weave (thermal mod + fast regen exp. Effect) and two heavy boosters (pretty well engineered), and around 2200 hull integrity.

Even with grade 3 clean drives like mine, you should be able to manouver out of firering range from any single target without your shield dropping. Sure, an elite anaconda might take it down pretty fast before you get stuck to its tail, but that’s why we have the great backup hull.

The chieftain is a ship that offers great damage compared to its size, you can combine a multitude of weapons at once.

But it’s not meant for tanking - don’t fly it like such.

It will outmanouver anything in the game that it can’t kill in 10 seconds.
It will take any damage from the initial combat manouvering, then stick to your targets six o’clock and stay there doing burst damage when in position.

It's a fairly unique ship, but if you think Vulture on steroids that's about it. I agree about small hardpoints up to a point, on any mid size to the big three, IMHO the minimum HP size should be medium. You don't build a tank and fit a revolver to the turret.
Still 3 small rail guns with long range and rapid fire, pack a serious punch. Shields are about spot on for the type of ship. You can have 1400Mj of raw shield power, or 680Mj bi-weaves with super fast regen rate. All you need to survive is the initial attack, get on the targets six or under it's belly and you win the fight every time. If your taking on a wing, zoom and boom. With G5 dirty drives with drag effect, I get 550Km/s boost. After each pass my shields will be at max before I even turn back to more pew pew.

I'm running 6C Bi-weave with G5 thermal resist and 2 G5 heavy duty booster and 1 G5 resist augmented booster. Gives me 535 MJ with ~50% resistances (can't remember exact numbers). On top of that I'm using reactive surface composite with G5 thermal resist and 2 hrps with G5 heavy duty giving me around 2100 armor with +30% resistances to everything. I could add another HD shield booster and another HD hrp but I don't feel the need for it as I'm very tanky already.

I really loved the Chieftain after buying it, even though I was a little disappointed with all the small weapons and the lack of internal compartments. After flying it awhile, I got out my Fed Gunship to do a comparison and I find that I like the Gunship better. I will probably sell the Chieftain, especially since I have mostly lost interest in combat in this game now.

Gotta disagree about the shields. I love that it's shields are thin. If I want to shield tank I have an FDL or a big ship. Flying the Chieftain means I have to fly differently, be more aware, be more careful etc. Love it. As has been mentioned above it gives you the chance to try out some different builds. I have quite thin shields but with high resistances and as fast a regen as I can make it. They regenerate PDQ! Sure a big NPC might strip them in one salvo but they're back up before they can hit me again.

I understand what you're saying about the hardpoints. Basically they're designed for rail-guns. I haven't really found a satisfactory use for them outside of that.

I bought mine as a heavy fighter, essentially a better Vulture, with better jump range and power management. I'm not quite done engineering it yet, but just took down FGS. Impressions? Very nimble, really great as a heavy fighter. Lost shields quickly (I started the fight ramming FGS), but it didn't seem to be a problem. Perhaps I will replace 6A regular with Bi-weave. I wouldn't mind additional utility mounts, but it's not bad. As for small hardpoints, I tend to put turreted pulse lasers there on my bigger ships (sort of point defence kind of solution, useful when your ship is not turning very fast) and it worked here as well, though after seeing it dance I will think about some gimballed weapons instead. Overall, it's a very good ship and pretty well balanced. It doesn't seem to me it needs any drastic adjustments. Definitely the best heavy fighter currently in game.

Discovered another little gem about this ship. If you get the Lori Jameson G3 specialised shield cell bank upgrade you don't need heat sinks when you deploy an SCB. My heat caps out at 83% when I use an SCB, but i take no module damage at all. This frees up a utility slot for either chaff, or another shield booster. That gives me 760Mj of shields with bi-weaves! Took on three Pythons in a haz res tonight. one elite two competent. Hardly broke a sweat.

Do you mind sharing an edshipyard or coriolis link, please?
