Newcomer / Intro Choose a system as "home"

By reading around it seems that is very common to choose a solar system and making it their "home". I understand that somebody choose a system with a spaceport selling everything (like Jameson memorial) or choosing a system home of their faction, but what other criteria are behind this decision? I am new, and I know that, but I really want to stay around a system at the beginning to pull up credits and experience. Share your thoughts Commanders!

First and most important consideration - what does the traffic controller sound like? ;)

Actually that is not completely a joke, there are a couple of Fed announcers that really grate so I would never base at one of their stations as hearing them every time would be torture.

A more sensible approach is to consider distance from arrival, availability of ships and modules (related to economy and population size), closeness of systems with different economies, nearness of a system with an interstellar factor, etc.

Less important (to me) or maybe the most important to you - do you want to play as a Fed, Imp or Alliance?

Also, and this has never interested me, do you want to play an active part for a powerplay "power" (e.g. be an acolyte of the blue-haired-waifu or be party to a brain-washing cult etc.).

I suppose exposure to the Thargoid war might matter to someone - do you want to be far from any maelstrom or do you want to be close-by to engage in AX activities?

Whatever you chose, good luck and remember 1) you can save up for your own fleet carrier and so have a mobile station all of you own and 2) it is simple to relocate even without a FC, ship and module transfers are not expensive given the availability of credits these days (though Bubble to Colonia is exorbitant).

Well, I didn't know that, but I don't see it as a "stupid" thing. I completely understand that is related to the people taste's.

Too earlier for me to select one side. I still don't know what I want to do, probably Exploration, Combat and Mining. But I am not sure on which side I want to align with.

Probably once I've got lots of money, skills and a great engineered ship, I will think about it, but definitely not for now.

Let me ask you this question then, how would you look for a particular system in a massive Galaxy? Using Inara I guess? What are the filters you will put there?

If you like filters. Try spansh.co.uk

I would pick any relative high pop system. Choosing a home system can be done later when you have some stuffs. For now it is nice not to move a lot cause your ships are not very capable and it helps if you can get higher reputation missions. You achieve this by using the same 6-10 systems to run missions too. I was based around Hecate in the beginning of my play. You will find your favorite systems while playing and picking up missions. I hardly ever go to Hecate anymore but I did decide my mom lives there. And if I need mission commodities I know that I can rely on juicy missions around that area.

You don't have to actually "pick a side", it is just whether you feel like RPing Fed, Imp or Alliance - remember some ships and systems are locked behind ranks in either Fed or Imp but, as I said, you don't have to actually choose - probably most of us have ranked up in both so as to access ships. (Choosing only comes into play if you decide to pledge to a powerplay "power" - like to gain access to their weaponry etc.)

As for searches, yes INARA is a good place to start, "here is one I made earlier" ;) :

My main is at Jameson because it fits my needs. I just discovered my original console commander is settled in at a planetary base. I have no idea why I would do that, but it must have fit my needs at that time. Your selection of a home base should be based on your personal needs. Don't over-think it, just pick a station, and see how it goes. If you later discover it doesn't fit your needs, you'll have a better idea of what to look for. Eventually, you'll find a home station that works for you.

Everything in this game takes time to figure out. That's a big part of it's charm.

At this point in time, I'm actually basing myself around Engineers. Find one of them that you REALLY, REALLY need to use, like one that does Power Plants, Power Distributors or Frameshift Drives then work around him/her to level up your equipment first. Helps a lot of you can go look up where all the material traders around that specific area are based in, then you'll know where to go to exchange material. The other reason initially to base out of a system is if the system sells a specific ship you are aiming for. At the start, I based out of LP 580-33 because it sold Couriers, so I took missions around that area until I got it, then I moved to Engineer sitting.

I have specific criteria I look for. Using third party tools like EDDB makes it pretty simple to narrow down prospective home systems and starports.

-- System name easy to type
-- Mix of Fed and Imp factions
-- Short arrival distance to the station
-- Landables for raw mats
-- Rings for bounty hunting
-- Icy rings for core mining
-- Boom state
-- Mat trader
-- Ocellus or Orbis station (I hate Coriolis)
-- HGE spawns

For what it's worth, I do not like permit systems for home station. The reason is no missions go to a permit system. So if you like to run missions from there, you always return empty handed, limiting to an extent the money and rep you can make. Jameson is great and all, but I don't want to be based there. Choosing a system close by is good though.

Peronally, I don't have a "home" system. My ship (and now my carrier) is my home and wherever I may be at the time is where I lay my hat :)
Yep pretty much this although i have 2 systems that i use when not out exploring, 1 is a quiet mining system just over 600LY from SOL the other is EV Lacertae, 1 jump from a decent Plat spot and a hop from my PP system.
Ive pretty much visited most decent size trading stations around EVL so have never had a need for any third party tools, all the trade info i need is now available from each system.

EDMC is a utility that sends data from commanders journal files to the EDDN network (which other sites feed off). I haven't heard anything about it no longer being developed.

Well it isn't quite as you intimated in post #12 - since the project is still there and though @Athan is not going to be caring for it, there are others who can (might?) look after it:
