"Chrome" versus "Chromed" - Compare Screenshots

I have a few gold and chrome paints, hell my Cobra Mk4 has a chrome skin for max rarity :sneaky:

They decided to replace chrome and gold for some reason I forget, but allowed those who had bought the originals to keep them. Some ships look better in the '..ed' versions to be honest, but I do like my DBX chrome. It's like a jaggy glitterball.

I still love the old Chrome and Gold style paintjobs. They remind me of the super shiny McLaren Formiula 1 chrome liveries in the early 2010s.

I once used the original Gold paintjob on my Asp Explorer (still absolutely gorgeous) a while back. On this white ice world, the very gold ship decided to go all Blue Dress on me and turn black. 😜

S'funny, that is almost exactly how my iEagle Chromed skin looks in the store in Horizons.
In Odyssey, it looks a lot like your pic'.

Don't think I'd gamble on buying a bunch of Chromed skins based on the previews, though.
I was willing to risk it for my iEagle, and I guess it worked out, but I'll skip the others.
Yea, I risked it for the sidewinder because I didn't have a good skin for it, and with Odyssey I'm using it a lot. It's not reflective but it still looks good. I would like a shiny DBS, but I'm not taking any risks with that.

It's interesting how Frontier is actively getting less sales by the bad look of paints in the store...

Golden (greeny yellow paint):

Midnight Black (gunmetal grey):

Default (Grey) under the same lighting for comparison:

Here the Golden probably looks more like something covered in gold leaf, so which is 'best' is more subjective. The Gold originally looked pretty bad when I bought it & the Odyssey version is actually nice, like the Chrome ones above with a browny-yellow hue.

IMO if you want polished gloss black the original Chrome makes a better black than midnight black, which is more semi-gloss black

Midnight black (very dark Grey):

Wireframe Black (gunmetal grey):

These all look good in their own way, although the wireframe skin's base colour should match the midnight black.

I think Golden (the ones currently available) are potentially worth having if you like the look, the Chromed ones really are just silver for the most part and a bit bland.

I don't pay a huge amount of attention to paint-jobs but don't we already have some paint-jobs that look like an "anodised" finish?

[googling in progress]

I see the store (inaccurately) calls them "galvanised" paint-jobs.
Seems like most of the "golden" and "chromed" paint-jobs would be more accurately sold as "galvanised gold" or "galvanised silver".

Seems like FDev either need to update or improve the pictures they use to sell paint-jobs in the store.
At a guess, they're still using screenshots taken in Horizons.

I don't have any of those paints for comparison, and the free azure and Iridescent ones I do have don't look shiny in Odyssey anyway.

And in all fairness I never thought the store screenshots looked representative anyway, even before Odyssey.

Looking at those screenshots I can only bang my head against my credit card for spending such an ungodly amount of money on previously subpar and often now completely broken cosmetics tat (those non-"ed" skins do look nice, funny those are the ones no longer being sold and not vice versa). And these are supposed to be the expensive, "premium" ones.

Never again.

True, the galvanised paints are very similar to the chromed and golden just in different base colours. I think they might well be the same now I think about it.

The main problem with the original chrome is it shows up any poor anti-aliasing and other detail problems like no other paint. Including the reflections which are excellent, but look terrible in lower detail levels.

The original Chrome was a rare, limited edition issue in Dec 2016 (and a one off as far as I'm aware). See the previous page (489). Debates about availability of rarer, limited or eligibility criteria items, missed at the time and no longer available, are for other threads though.
From Dec 2017 onwards, the Chromed variant (for a wider range of ships, and SRV) has been available occasionally for purchase.

(Odyssey, Patch 7)

The effect seems to vary by ship, and the Chromed looks better in most environments, however the Chrome does, in some circumstances, quite literally shine.

I used that to narrow down the dates a bit. From memory there was a change to the way the Chrome & Gold skins were applied, changing the look. I found this in the patch notes for update 2.2.03 (Jan 2017):

Following that I found some threads discussing the change, mostly that it was a downgrade from what I have just read (it wasn't a discussion I participated in at the time).

Again from memory there was a point where all owners of the older Chrome/Gold skins were given the equivalent Chromed/Golden skin for free, I've not found that post from FDev though but I guess it would have been sometime in 2017.

AFAIK Chrome/Gold wasn't exclusive (some may have been, and I may be wrong) so I don't think there's any Cobra MkIV-like situation where offering the Chrome/Gold variant would be a problem but that sort of situation would explain why the Gold/Chrome skins have not been made available for sale since the Chromed/Golden ones were released.

I still have that email, dated Friday 17th November 2017:

Commander, we've recently improved our limited edition Chrome Paint Jobs. As a thank you for your continued loyalty to Elite Dangerous, we're gifting you this newest version free of charge.

Any Chrome paint jobs purchased for ships previously will remain but you’ll also find an updated version for those ships in Station Services Livery for your CMDR.

Please visit the FAQ for any queries.

It's bizarre how the chieftain chromed is the same as the old chrome paints on other ships, makes it really confusing that they feel other ships don't deserve the same paint.

There's for sure something weird going on with the Chromed skins. Got one for my FdL in the end, and it looks pretty darn good while sat at stations, and landed on planets depending on light conditions. Shiny, reflective even.

But in SC it's different once you're not directly in the vicinity of the star - unless you get the angle towards the star right, it looks almost like a drab grey, and not shiny at all.

I'm sure they'll eventually get it sorted once the game leaves the Alpha stage.
