Should there be identifiable markings for players who have NOT spent RL $ on the game

I voted no as it's a form of negative discrimination.
I wouldn't want to judge an encounter based on some flag that appears on the HUD indicating that the person in my sights bought something with real money. It might make me think they will be an easy mark because they bought their stuff when in fact they would be a very good pilot and kick my ****! Also, how does this flag get wiped out? Does it stay with you for good, even if all of your bought items are subsequently sold on or is it like some kind of flag on you account? No, the more I think about it the less I like it, for a variety of reasons.

Hi, I voted no for two reasons.

First, we will be able to see the reputation of each player (or at least some approximation of it). Hence we will be able to see whether they earned their stuff

Second, if someone bothers you then you can put them on your ignore list.

If people are money-rich and time-poor, and want to spend cash to get more enjoyment out of the game, then I say we let them.

Hi all,

My first posted thread... :D

I wanted to propose an idea to ED Devs - here's the background.

I have been playing NWN online for about for a good few months and figured out how to make in game currency really quick. With the accumulated currency I have been able to make even more currency through buying selling on auction house etc...I have then bought end game gear.

Now here's the problem with that...anyone who is a little serious or slightly bitter or militant in their views to Pay-2-Win games will cast accusations (endlessly) that you have purchased your gear with RL cash - even if you have not - it gets sickening after awhile and destroys your own enjoyment of the game - if you win an encounter with another player - then you end up getting whisphers that you paid to win with your "mommies" credit card or something like that.

Anyways, it just really can get to you, if you haven't and they cannot accept it and there is no way to prove it.

PROPOSAL: There should be some clear marking or identifiable way that another player can tell that a player has not received items from other players (other than NPCs) or has paid to have ingame currency or items.

This way you can prove unequivocally that you are 100% legit in your gear and accumulated wealth.

Interested to hear other people's opinions and alternatives to provide solution to the problem stated...

Voted no.

And personally I think auction houses are no different than using real cash. You're outside the game world environment, picking up gear you haven't earned.

I find the concept of auction houses and spending real money bizarre. The only point of video games is progression IMO ...once you're at the end, what is the point ?

And Elite is not a competitive game anyway so I don't think any of this will be a problem....I'm sure I will be blown away at some point by people that have gotten high end craft/equipment by bending or breaking the rules, but I don't believe it will be a large problem in game.

I voted no also, and would rather not see any pay-to-win features in the game at all.

It's quite likely that I'd go single player if it turned out like that, which would be a real disappointment. Hopefully that sort of thing can be kept to other, er... lesser titles.

The simple answer is that ED isn't pay to win. While FD have mooted the idea of being able to buy in game credits, there are other prerequisites that limit the amount of advancement you can achieve by throwing money at the game. You're going to need to develop your avatar (in terms of reputations and ranks) to be able to use/purchase advanced equipment, just having a lot of money isn't going to enable easy mode.

Yes, but you can back this game at level that allows to start with a better equipped ship and more starting credits. Not that 4000.00 Credits get you too far without using for lucrative trading and there's also those who will have the advantage of starting as Founder's.

AFAIK ED won't have action houses, but I find your opinion intriguing - after all in the MMO archetype, the action houses are both a way to make ingame currency and purchase a great deal of things, a minority of those being under the top of the line gear (most AH transactions are crafting materials or consumables).

Not sure there is any progression as such in ED either - there are rankings, but reaching Elite is not the end of the game (fortunately).

From a roleplaying perspective, this is a silly proposition (as a roleplayer you should not even consider out-of-gameworld explanations for someone's success), but it is also that because it is a method of discrimination and the fewer we have of those, the better.

Also, Elite is not the sort of game where you can buy your way into happiness in any case.

It looks like the people have spoken. Besides, it would be obvious if on day one of release someone is flying around in some behemoth it's probably a dead cert that they couldn't have earned that money that quickly. :)

I voted no, unfortunately there are those who cannot accept that there are people who are just plain better players. And it wouldn't matter what markings were visible on your craft, they would still be convinced that you beat them because you spent money or are somehow cheating. Rather than the truth, that they were out played by their oppenent, or they made an error of some description.
