General Clear Notoriety

you are not upsetting anyone this is what the forum is about, opnions but put me out my misery WHAT does BGS mean lol.
Background Simulation, I guess making the acronym B S would have been unfortunate! :D

Basically it was meant as mechanic to make the galaxy become alive and change depending on what players do in the game. Gamers being gamers of course immediately started manipulating it to achieve their own wishes, and with the addition of player factions players use it to build their own empires and fight wars with neighbors, or maybe better put to wipe out smaller factions that don't have the numbers or the tenacity to fight forever wars.

There's no possible way the game can know the motive for an engagement, and it shouldn't care who's weaker. I don't want a nanny watchdog trying to balance the game through punitive restrictions based on otherwise perfectly normal game play. It's really easy to avoid being ganked. I've never been ganked, not even once.
Whilst I agree in principle the reason for the starter systems is exactly this problem, players in heavily armed anacondas were camping in the starter systema shooting new players just because.

Everyone here agrees C&P needs a complete overhaul but no matter what is suggested there will always be somebody crying about how it's unfair to x play style. It's one of the reasons Solo is so popular as people want to play after work doing their own thing they don't want to explore the galaxy to have someone shoot them at the last hurdle.

It's odd because in ground CZs you can kill every one of your teammates with no penalties. They don't even turn hostile. At least that was my experience when doing bombing runs.
I have to try this, didn't know that you could kill your own teammates. Thought they simply ignored friendly fire.

The traditional DnD RPG has character classes, race and the whole good/evil/lawful/chaotic thing. Your choices affect your gameplay and imposes various restrictions on said gameplay.

Elite could have you start as a "neutral" type character with a wide range of gameplay options and rewards, but as you make choices you are taken down a particular path. Or you could select a career. Want to be a trader, then as you progress the better trade opportunities open up, but there will be fewer and less rewarding combat opportunities. Want to kill innocent npcs and pcs*, fine, but few will want to hire you for legal stuff and there are increased threats as well as more places being no go areas for service/repair. Changing career path should be hard and not done quickly.

* For me, destroying other peaceful CMDRs should be a really heinous crime and punished more harshly, but I do acknowledge that there are issues identifying the aggressor in some incidents.

Alternatively they could add a criminal syndicate to the PP. Witnessing the "recent" addition of the Consortium to the codex and a system far away from the bubble, maybe the intention indeed is to update C&P/PP/BGS and to make crime a more interesting facet of the game. I suppose one can always hope..

I'm sorry there's a little addendum to that.

I hope that you have not forgotten that the first step to remove player factions from the game has been made, yes the developers can not just close the player factions will be a lot of questions about it. But they have already made the first step to this and with the departure of old players and the arrival of new factions of people will disappear from the game.

P.S. You can no longer apply for a Player Minor Faction as applications were closed in early April 2023.

I am at level 10. It affects nothing I do except to remove the "stay clean' narrative that might make me choose to massacre an anarchy over a law driven society.
Don't they send interpol against you then? And, whatever they're called, the super engineered ships? Advanced Recon Units or something?

Yes I know that, and IMO good riddance..

Hopefully if development isn't shut down it'll be replaced with something better.

BTW, you didn't answer my question about how your proposal would improve the game..?

ATR and they are pretty meh , when I was a murder hobo for BGS I would get up to level 10 and only notice when the ATR arrived because my shields would be gone in seconds but they were pretty poor against hull, so I would them finish off my "victim" before jumping out of system. I believe that Fdev rightly assumed folk would jump when shields went down but I could jump back on and murder a few more before they turned up again.

It just prolonged my murder spree but didn't stop it and even with Level 10 I didn't really have to change my gameplay at all .

Yes I have had similar experiences. They drop my shields quickly but allow finishing off a kill and then to run. I'm a crappy combat pilot but my ambition is to one day solo an ATR wing in a medium ship even though it seems a bit of an expensive hobby bounty wise to make them take a persistent interest. :)

Someone above has already described it, it will essentially divide your activity. If you choose to be a bad guy, it's your conscious path, not a wiggle room.

But you also haven't given me any objections to it other than BGS and I've shown that BGS and it's not an element of the game and that the developers are right to remove THIS from the game.

I still haven't understood in what way your suggestion would improve the game, but let's drop the discussion. In any case it's a moot point as Frontier won't change it based on your suggestion, if any change comes (hopefully) it will be part of a bigger rework of game mechanics.
It will allow players to more fully get used to the role they play and do everything thoughtfully.
Already written above. In the current situation, you may disrespect the characters in the game (it doesn’t matter whether they are people or NPCs), and if you accidentally kill someone, YOU will not care and will continue to kill in order to complete the mission.
Since you know, it will be VERY easy for YOU to wash yourself away from this.

The change I would like is notoriety is used by illegal activity to offer more profitable illegal activities so as Jack Winter has stated it becomes a career arc rather than a murder fest. Why not assassinations, explosions, releasing a toxin into an area etc. all illegal and all could extend your notoriety if they know you did it.

At present it seems more of a hinderance than a career choice.

Likewise the law abiding side won't deal with you if you have notoriety balancing everything out.

There should be more interest than keep shooting new players etc to get notoriety it should be a career arc like military missions etc.
