CMDR Name question

I impulse bought a second hand PS4 yesterday and installed Elite after buying 3 months worth of PS Plus. I have been playing on PC since the alpha days and have very little experience of consoles. I did have a PS3 many moons ago so already had a Sony account. The problem is the user name I created on that account at the time is not what I would choose as a commander name, but I can't seem to change it anywhere. From what digging I have done it looks like once you choose a user name your stuck with it. Is it the done thing to create myself as another family member with a more appropriate username after unlinking the current one from the new Frontier account I created. If I can do this then what happens if I choose a user name on the PS network that cant be used in ED as that name is taken. I know the console universes are separate to the PC one but can the same CMDR name exist in any of the universes or is it unique.

I am using a T Flight Hotas. Do most stick with the default mapping or are there any alternatives that are preferred generally. I did notice it's easy to hit boost when going for landing gear.

a lot of people do stick with stock, (I'm not one of those, and I'm a xboxer)

but what I do is add binds on unused buttons, and input devices, B, or circle or whatever is a input device, you need to make sure you hold it for half a sec at a maximum

You can't change your CMDR name, the best you can do is create a PSN id which you would like your commander to be called. You can set up multiple accounts on your PS4 for this if you like. I have 2 CMDRs on my PS4, my main account and a secondary. Doesn't need to be a family member. I created a specific CMDR.

You also get the bonus that if your PS4 is set to your primary console for your main PSN account all the accounts on that PS4 will have access to PS+ and PSN content (Horizons for example).

The PSN = CMDR id is actually discussed in the PlayStation Elite FAQ.

I have an Xbox One also and had a quick play with ED on it last year but didn't really do much. I seem to remember I did change the buttons on that as a few things annoyed me. Some as on the PS4. I'll try adding a few more binds to the unused buttons.

I did se the FAQ but didn't notice any discussion about the PSN CMDR name. Only that they are the same.

consoles use the same name as their GT or psn name, only changing your tag or screen name for the whole works

Sony did a survey asking some people recently if they would like to change their PSN ID so it may be coming. That’s assuming you don’t mind changing it for other games as well. Didn’t see any info on a likely implementation date unfortunately.

As I only got this PS4 yesterday there is no harm in changing name as I haven't got any other games on here yet. I did have a PS3 a while back but didnt do much on that either so although it's the same Sony acct it's not a problem.

The Cmdr name only has to be unique to the format, so you can have same cmdr name across formats (if someone hasn't used it already). Mine is the same on ps4 and Xbox.

I thought so. It would have probably worked for me too but unfortunately the name had already been taken on the PS network. I got near enough though.

You're telling me I can set up a second cmdr on my existing PS4 account... on a different Frontier account? But use the same copy if the game?

It seems so. I created one on my main PS account then wife created hers. I have created a third secondary as I wanted a better CMDR name than my main PS ID. Worked fine on the single copy of ED. Both CMDR's of mine are on the one FD account. The wife's is on her own FD account.

Yup. Its always been like that on PS4. (and Xbox I believe). Its the one bonus we get for paying a Plus (Gold) subscription.

On a ps4 it's called a sub account, any name that's has an email account attached to it will work. Provided of course that the name is different than ANY other in Sony's library of account names. If I remember right, one can have four sub accounts attached to their main account. When you set it up, give it all the same abilities that the main account has and your good to go.
