Cobra Engine

Can anyone from Frontier confirm what render paths are supported in the Cobra engine?
I had been assuming just two paths, DX9 and DX10/11

Well there's the dank scary path, covered in weeds and smells funny. Then there's the brighter but longer path that stick to the more trafficked areas...

...I have no idea sorry ;)

LMFAO. I genuinely just burst out laughing and my wife is looking at me funny now :p :D

Frontier makes games for many platforms so I expect a crossplatform capable engine.

Wich means. Other platforms can be added in more modular abstract way.
And both OpenGL and directx could be expected.

For winPC and Mac they could go for only OpenGL but lot of dev uses DX for winPC. Even if there is a mac port using openGL.

In line with DB oft mention statements that he intends to make Elite Dangerous as future proof as possible, Is FD looking at future technologies for the Cobra engine, namely things like Mantle and DirectX 12?

In some ways, DX12 should be a no brainer as early tests show up to 600% improvement over DX9 (and probably a fair amount overDX11) and as MS is going to offer a free upgrade path to older machines so that DX12 is looking to become ubiquitous.

Given it's being used for OSX/MAC for ED and presumably consoles like PS for other games, i'm pretty sure it would also need to support OpenGL.

I'm kinda curious about it actually. I wonder if FD will ever have a "Free" version like Unity-Free for bored people to play with :)

Considering the recently announced beta-phase of the ED MacOSX-client - and fact that the PlayStation3 is a target-platform for the Cobra-middleware - FD's engine has to have an OpenGL-rendering path.

Being an avid Ubuntu-user (and also Canonical-employee btw), I'm very eager to see a native Linux game-client of ED. I would even go as far as assuming that there are far more potential ED-customers in the Linux user-community than in the OSX user-community. Furthermore the willingness of the Linux community to pay well for games has been proven multiple times by the HumbleBundle sales.

I wish there would be a bit more transparency on the features of the Cobra-middleware/engine... just looking at the Unity3D and UnrealEngine comnpetition as good examples to follow with regards to shared information.

These days there's certainly no technical reason to not support native Linux game-clients.

Best regards...
