Cobra MK 3 Trading Setup

Hey guys!

First and foremost, LOVING the game. Its incredible how much potential it has. I just got my first Cobra MK 3, and after ~8 hours in game, I decided that trading and exploration is what really sparks my interest. I've decided to set up the Cobra for trading first in order to build up the bank, after which, I'll either buy a different ship or refit the cobra. I have a really solid trading route planned out that will make me some decent credits, but, I have literally NO idea how to set up the ship..

Heres my dilemma:

-I need to be able to haul 40-50 tonnes of cargo at any given point
-I need to be able to jump 18LY+ right out of the gate
-I DON'T need any offensive capability (not to sound horrible, but I'll be playing Solo until I have enough credits to sustain myself)
-I DON'T really need to worry about defense, as, I won't be dogfighting for awhile. Will refit for that later

I've been flying around sort of aimlessly looking for a place to refit the ship, but I can't seem to find ANYWHERE to sell me the level 4 variants of the ship parts. I'm currently in 'Gateway'

What I'm looking for is a solid 'build' with part names and whatnot that will give me a solid foot in the door. After I get this initial setup done, I'll at least have a better understanding of how/why to fit certain things and moving forward I'll be in a better position to do it on my own.

Additionally, I don't have a ton of funds right now - only about 50k after purchasing the ship - but I'm sure I can sell the weapons and whatnot to make some more. I can also do a bit of bounty hunting to get more money before I set it up solely for trading. Thanks a ton in advance...still pretty new, and the game is pretty overwhelming at first before you really know what you're doing ;]

upgraded FSD may be needed for 18ly range
fit chaff and heatsink launcher for last ditch defence /optional

Have a good scout around the map for a High tech system for modules.
 
You need to be trading rares!

Several threads on rare commodities also.

The route I have planned out is a rare trading route, and that is what I'll be doing once I have the ship setup! ;]

Unfortunately, I simply have no idea how to actually setup the ship - thus this thread! :D

Ahhh that is great info, and is appreciated!

I wasn't entirely sure which type of system I needed for the modules, which was my major problem. A guy above suggested Altair, which is ~85LY from where I am now. I will head in that direction while also scouting the map omw there ;]
 
My Cobra Trader has a
A class FSD (need this to shorten the flight time)
Upgraded power plant to match,
B class fuel scoop (makes it quicker to do the rare run even though you loose 4 tons of cargo space)
D class other modules (reduce weight),
56 t cargo space

Can do 190ly jump in less than 15 jumps normally. No docking on the way. One stop at 90ly to reroute it to near the destination.
 
I got a Cobra set up to 52t capacity. no sheields, jump 10ly fully laden.

good for trading in safe systems, as it's a cobra you can usually submit then boost away from interdictions without taking too much damage. fuel costs arent too bad either

10LY isn't enough for my trade run - MUST be 18LY+
 
I personally would sell your weapons and your shield and get max cargo space, it takes it up to 60 tons if you do this, you ideally want D grade every thing apart from the FSD which I would go up to a B, not much point wasting the money on an A rated FSD in my opinion, this is what I did and within a single evening I was in a Type 6.

This set up is for the pure trader, in my opinion weapons are wasted jump potential and the shields are not needed at all on the Cobra.

edit - forget fuel scoops the money made on the additional cargo out ways the money saved on fuel as fuel bills on the Cobra are low.

how did you get it up to 56t? I thought i'd maxed out capacity at 52t
 
Also I can't remember but I think my jump range fully loaded was about 17ly, If you upgrade to the A FSD as it looks like you need to I think it gets close to 20ly fully loaded but I am not 100% on these numbers.
 
Thanks everyone for your advice! I just got to Altair and after some research, I'll need a lot more than 50k credits to get this where I want it! lol.

The good news is, with the information you guys provided, I have a solid plan in place and should be able to get it fit out properly with haste. Thanks so much guys! :D
 
The class B FSD is about 550k CR, but laden I think 18ly would be difficult with that. A class is about 1.5 Million CR FYI

I know many have suggested no shields, but just be careful if you are still learning the ropes with docking or flying around objects because with no shield if you bump something at a decent speed you will be destroyed. Shields are a good defensive buffer more for your mistakes than for AI attacks in Solo or Private play (because the AI is pretty easy).

Cobra with no shields is fine as there is nothing you can't out run back into super cruise if interdicted and the hull is strong on the Cobra, not to mention repair prices are peanuts. I wouldn't go shieldless on any thing larger than the cobra though.
 
If your main objective is getting to 18 LY jump distance you will need a lot more money which, I know :( , defeats the object. The drive at a cost of 538k will not let you jump that far fully laden I am afraid.
