Cobra Mk III or Asp Explorer?

Hey commanders. I need some opinions. I've fully decked out my Cobra Mk III, to the max. I've 4 Beam weapons (I can never get the multi cannons or any other projectile weapons for that matter to hit) among a multitude of other things. BUT, my question is should I move on to an asp? I've maxed out my power plant (15.49Mw out of 15.60Mw). I know the Cobra Mk III is one of the faster ships in the game, and thats helped a lot.

This is what I have (internal)

Lightweight Alloys I 1
Power Plant A 4
Thrusters C 4
Frame Shift Drive A 4
Life Support C 3
Power Dist. A 3
Sensors C 3
Fuel Tank C 4
Cargo Rack E 4 x2
Shield Gen. A 4
Standard Docking Comp. E 1
Coll Limpet Cont. B 1
Adv Disc Scanner

And External

Beam Laser D 2 x2
Beam Laser E 1 x2
Killer Discovery Scanner B 0

Its a pretty good set up. Like I've said, I can't get the multi cannons to hit the other ship. (and please dun say "you need moar skillz" -_-) I may in the future yes. But I Was wondering if this set up is worth getting rid of to get into an asp? (component sell says its like 7.2mil, so I would get about 1.2mil back). CAN the asp be as fast as the cobra? Right now, cobra can do 292m/s and 420m/s boost....

It depends what your budget is for the ASP and what you intend to use it for.

Personally I kept my Cobra and added the ASP as an extra ship but I appreciate budget is a factor.

With the Cobra's weapons it might not be that your problem is using something other than beam lasers but the positioning of the hardpoints. The ones underneath are not as well placed as the others.
Try fitting gimballed multicannons to them and setting them in a different fire group. I find this set up is excellent on the Cobra.

In the end, it will be your heart which will make the decision on these two symbolic ships of the series Elite

If you are 100% combat i'd go Vulture. Its better than the ASP at combat and once upgraded can dance with the best of them.

If you like to mix between combat/trading/exploration/mining then yeah go for the ASP once you have credits for upgrades, insurance and the usual :)

Edit: You will have to learn about power management for the Vulture though...

Hi CMDR Ghostieboi,

I've just purchased an ASP in order to take part in my first CG hauling metals in Antal, prior to that I've been running a kitted out Cobra for quite a while mostly in HIRES sites doing bounty work. I don't have a lot of combat time in the ASP yet but the few interdiction scraps I've been have seen pretty positive results. It doesn't have quite as much speed but the maneuverability is similar and the 6 hardpoints pack quite a punch. The speed/boost combo is good enough for me to run when I need to, and shields are tough enough to take some pounding. I think it's a good choice if you want a bigger ship with more all round capability, I plan on using it for exploration due to the long jump ranges after the hauling gig is over. Seeing as most of my dogfighting is pretty close in and max speed isn't that important, I'm pretty happy with it.

Good Hunting!

That is not a maxed out cobra, buddy. D-grade that life support and sensors, A-up them thrusters and ditch those tiny beam lasers for something more useful. You can learn how to hit things with multicannons, just get the hang of leading your shots or use gimballed ones.
1A limpet controller is only 9 grand too, don't cheap out on a cobra, it'll pay you back in time.
Don't bother with the asp unless you want to go exploring or need to haul over 100 tons. Or if you just like the look of it, that's always a valid reason to buy a new ship to me.

The ASP is the better ship. However, it is hideously expensive to outfit - you won't get much change out of 30m if you want A grade modules.

Try an A grade Python for 320mil or a Combat Anaconda for 800mil.
ASP is still on the mid to low end of the scale, the tipping point occurs about the Clipper/Orca/Python level. :)

I would agree with CMDR Alex Brentnall

It's at this point that you need to consider options and funding of those options

Combat....... go Vulture... it's a no brainer

All rounder/Exploration (light combat only)... Asp

Both need serious Cr's to fund to fit out ... A class units are 5 Mil Cr's each and you might need to consider a T-6 or refit your Cobra for rare trading. For a T-6 you want at least 3 Mil Cr's for ship, upgrades and cargo/Ins float

Hard to say. It isn't clear what you are trying to do with the Cobra so I can't recommend the Asp until you figure it out. You have Bounty Hunter and Explorer modules on, not sure what the collector is for unless you are going through weak signal sources.

Guys, noob question of the day: My current balance is around 4MCr and I have a Cobra full options. I can see a big number in one of the right menu saying something like: Currency 13M Cr (or something like that). Does it mean this is the value of my ship + current balance, and I can have those Cr assuming I sell all part of my ship and then the ship itself?

I said it first: noob question, sorry

Edit: sorry for OT, I'm also thinking about updating from Cobra to another ship that's why

Its maxed out per the POWER Plant. I may downgrade my life support, but the sensors, no. I've tried getting A grade thrusters, and not enough power. The tiny beam lasers, they seem to be the only thing that actually hits. I've tried Fixed and gimballed multicannons, cannons, and fixed rail guns. I know I will eventually get used to the projectile weapons. As for the Limpet, I haven't found an A1 one yet. Like I said, I love it. Exploring, I do plan on doing that.

Its an all round ship. When I get interdicted, I load up the killer discovery, so when I kill them, I can get max credits out of it. The Adv. disc. scanner is for when I enter a system I've not been in before, and boom, I can look around. The limpets is exactly for that; going through weak signal sources. I use the cobra for everything (except mining. Not enough hard points/compartments).

Ah, right so. To get a little extra out of your power plant, set your cargo hatch, FSD and/or fuel scoop to the lowest module priority so they automatically shut down when you deploy weapons. Usually lets you build something that runs anything up to about 110% reactor output. Beam lasers are also very power and heat intensive, and while they're good for stripping shields they're not great for hull damage. I'd swap the main guns out for the somewhat more armour-piercing pulse lasers, they pack a good punch and are cheap and efficient.

I have been looking for D 2 pulse or burst lasers. I haven't found any yet. As for the power management, I will have to try that. I appreciate all of your guys' opinions and tips. :) thank you.

I went from an a fit cobra to an asp before my reset, bought a skin used it for 2 days and went back to the cobra. There's just something about it that the asp couldn't match. yes asp was better in dishing out damage, yes it could go further' yes you can haul more and make creds faster. But theres something that makes me grin in a cobra, can't put a finger on it. Now I won't fly anything else.

Was it the speed of the Cobra? Mine can go pretty freaking fast. 292m/s full engines, 420m/s burst.

That's just the way it is - a bigger, more expensive ship isn't automatically more fun. Fly what makes you smile!

Between a Cobra and an Asp it's by far the ASP. It does everything better but loses no flexibility. I've terminated 30+ Cobras tonight in my Asp which proves it's a superior combat ship. Cobras are EASY!
