Cobra MK3 cool builds

Sure , flying my totally OP overengineered FDL is fun, killing a gazillion of pirates and some CMDRs as well while they struggle to bring down a ring of my shield, same as trading with my Cutter, exploring with my ASP or mining with my Clipper.. but I just can't help it, the MOST fun I have playing Elite is in my shieldless Cobra MK3. Suddenly even PvE feels alive and dangerous again! .. Especially popping out 5 turrets on a megaship while perma-boosting around it or infiltrating settlements..

This is my current favorite universal build, focused on bubble travelling and sniping (4 long range rails can be swapped for the MCs). It can handle pretty much anything I throw at it. One of these days once I get to Colonia I will have it shipped out for peanuts and spend some time there.

Any other Cobra MK3 fans out there? Show me your build so I can get inspired towards different setups :)

I like the Cobra 3 a lot, it's probably still my number 1 favourite ship even if I don't fly it that often at the moment (it's not great for CGs if you want to achieve the higher tiers, like any other small ship).

Having said that, I've done pretty much everything in it. Won CZs, works great as a core miner, PvP (though on the more passive side, blockade running etc.), exploration, AX combat, cargo hauling, piracy.

There's something about the flight model and the cockpit that just makes it feel the most "right" out of all ships for me, can't quite explain it.

PS - my current build is a combat one, 4x fixed frags and 2000+ HP with an SRV fitted in case I fancy planetary scan missions.

That's because it is. :D

I have a shieldless Cobra mk III, too. Rigged for silent running, so a load of heat sinks. Weapons are two MCs, one pulse laser and a railgun - for the variety of special effects. And yes, it is possible to get destroyed. ;) I dislike the fact that I need to go and repair after (almost) each fight but the fights are cool. I mean, heat sink cool.

I've used CM3s (and CM4s) for almost every type of activity out there.

Currently my CM3 is setup as a salvage/refuel/repair ship that can drop into distress calls and help out those in need or scavenge stuff.

I don't do this much, but it makes a nice change of pace from other activities.

Its not set up for heavy combat, just able to ward off any low level threats. Perhaps threat 1 or 2 distress calls.

No outfitting presented, but you get the idea...

I love the Cobra. I have 2 of them, one of these is set up for general use with every possible sensible upgrade. It is a joy to fly. The other is set up for racing and is really quite quick. There is no NPC in the game nor really any Thargoid that could catch it. Fragile though.

I used to dislike the Cobra until I came up with a recent stealth build. The reason I chose the Cobra is because I wanted a small, cheap, two-seater (with the copilot beside me rather than behind me) that I could do fun things with, and the Cobra fit that bill. I multicrew with an alt CMDR, so my copilot Jenny sits right beside me in VR. Like you, my ship is shieldless, and I use what once felt like an annoyance - the widely spread lower hardpoints, for something fun like asymmetric weapons. I use gimbaled beams on the top, and on the bottom is a corrosive turret MC (SRB) along with a seeker launcher, giving me some nice versatility.

It's now one of my favorite combat ships, though my love of PvE combat in general has grown cold over the years thanks to excessive shield cell and chaff spamming by NPCs. Because of this and other reasons, I'm thinking of becoming a ganker, so this ship might be perfect for that. The first ever ganker in ED Lore flew a Cobra! 😈

Another reason I love the Cobra is that it is the only ship that looks like it has been made in Area 51 , reverse engineered from the Roswell UFO :D .. It also feels like flying an UFO.

i am considering setting up a cobra for Odyssey. I dont currently fly them but i used to for data missions and i did enjoy it. Especially as i normally fly big ships.

Here is my cmk3 build Prometheus.
Was the 1st ship I owned and the ship I fly most often.
Has had many module swaps but this is the current configuration.
Came as a suprise to many gankers in the last CG as few expect a cobra to put up a strong fight.

Love that I found this!

Currently rocking blasters and mines, I live for watching those pirates chasing me die to them.

I'm aiming to build it into a thermal beam boat for kicks.

Good times.

One of the most fun adventures I had in elite was, I transferred money to a carrier so that my balance was a nice round number. Then I bought a cobra and equipped it at a local market (no Jameson, and no inra to find modules). Then I did pve piracy to try to get my balance back to that nice round number.

Essentially I was pretending that I had gone into debt with a criminal gang and was working to pay them off. Took quite a while to start making a profit.

As someone whose only ship in the game has been a Cobra Mk III for the past few years (I‘ve owned a number of ships in the past but generally only one at a time), I like this thread topic! /^_^\

My ship is a multirole (combat explorer and light cargo), because being my only ship, it has to do all the things (well, okay, a lot of the things).

With only 667 hull and 229 shields, it mostly relies on speed (and heat sinks) to get out of sticky situations - 433 m/s with 618 m/s boost.

Main guns are medium Salvation/Azimuth-modified Guardian Plasma Chargers (which do significant damage to human NPCs as well as Thargoids), supported by small overcharged corrosive multicannons.

LR sensors give over 10 km emission detection so I can find my targets at range, get in, hit hard and get out.

Pretty good jump range of 43+ ly and carries Scarab SRV and 16T corrosion-resistant cargo.

With the engineering changes, I've decided to re-do my Cobra Mk 3's to be this build:

Basically, a tough old nut to crack, even for players, great for BGS, ok for NPC pirate kills, and an ok bubble taxi.
