Collector limpets dying as soon as delivering materials to ship

Odd issue, instead of returning to floating outside the ship, I've been having problems with limpets dying as soon as any materials are deposited in my ship from destroyed ships, high source emissions etc

Whilst in a vulture it's not such an issue as manually collecting cargo works, i however was hoping to quicken the process.

Is this happening to others or just me?
 
Do you target the materials? If a mipet picks up a targeted material it will destroy itself after delivering. If you let them do their own thing they stick around.

Why this is, is anyone's guess.

FD .... why ? why ?????? It's not even a good idea when you want to target one select item .... the limpet could be re-used to target something else.

Forget the Anaconda balance passes, forget ice worlds and atmospherics and Legs ...... we need this fix :)

Edit add: FD, it's such a great QOL fix, you could introduce a DLC around it:

Ya, I really don't get why it's even a thing. Doesn't really make any sense lore-wise or balance-wise.

Because:

Collector limpets have 2 modes of operation:
- targeted mode: in this case the limpet flies at 200m/s, picks up the target, delivers it fast and then deactivates.
you can look at it as: limpet works at 360% efficiency but it burns out very fast
- non-targeted mod: in this case the limpet pick anything within his range, but operates at maximum 60 m/s and lives for the entire duration (unless he dies accidentally)

Ah, ok. I've done hours and hours of mining and never even noticed a speed difference. So thanks.

Personally I don't think it's worth it though. I doubt anyone is going around and using targeted mode as their main method of retrieval.

Oh, but it's worth. If you get a mission to "eliberate hostages" and the target ship has PDT... the only way to pick fast the hostages is to use targeted limpets.
Even if it doesnt have PDT, it may still to repick the lost cargo and you have to be faster than he is.
 
Try not selecting a target for the limpet to collect, then it will get everything not on your ignore list.
If you select one thing to collect and then send out a limpet, it will collect and then die.
This could have been what I was doing wrong. Thanks
 
Well, i just goes to show you learn something new every day, cheers you lovely forum!
I was wondering only the other day why my murderboats limpets only collected one item then blew up, whereas mining limpets just got the lot.

Apart from my intermittent limpet controller, erm, rants(?), I'm more and more minded that limpets should be recoverable.

Limpets already have some sort of durability which adjust based on task and module, make this visible, have the option to recall a limpet from the contact panel & keep the use level persistent.

This allows limited reuse but not infinite use, means the select and die thing becomes a quick select and recover (much more sensible) and even opens up options for things like limpet grades.

Anyway, I better stop before I get back to controllers..
