Colonized system name change

Honestly I would be fine with a list of random names provided by Frontier.

Might be a pain to make, because two systems can't have the same name. And using the current naming formula for colony building ( [name] + [word] from a short determined list) would be lackluster.

Most, if not all, of the system names are taken from Astronomy, actual real science. FDev went to great pains trying to make the ED galaxy match the real Milky Way galaxy, why would they now let peeps rename those systems? I don't see it happening, and really would 't want them to either.

The free station rename system currently takes two random words.

Would we settle for system renaming by allowing us to  browse a long list of possible names, and pick two of them?

That might put some fears to rest regarding silly names. Maybe.

If not, well, my god how many multiples of famous sci fi systems are we gunna see?

Just plain ridiculous ones would be bad enough.

"Fish Paste"
"Oooh Pretty Star"
"HJOIEQXVFDJMBLID"
"Everyponies Friendship Barn"

The space game literally filters the end of the planet name "uranus" if it's used in any player named ship or object because apparently nobody here can act like an adult about it.

Personally, I'd be quite happy for Frontier just to give all inhabited-so-far systems currently with just their default AB-C d1-23 name a procedural-but-pronouncable name as a routine part of client releases. I don't have any interest in naming my system anything specific, but I'd quite like it to have a name of some sort. The question then is whether Frontier's existing procedural name generators can actually cope with another 100,000+ named systems (we're not there yet, we will be)
Even if the latter is a concern, they could put a development threshold on it before it triggers such as "10 facilities completed or all slots filled".
Which even then wouldn't matter depending on what gets used as the seed for the name generator - if it's based on the system's coordinate position then a random outpost bridge system wouldn't matter.

After spending two hours in Dhan last night and reading the chat... my stance is solidified in rebar and concrete, no way am I for any re-naming of star systems. Two solid chat spam hours of brain rot, pp, poo poo, anatomy, and other juvenile humor. Which isn't humor at all but there isn't a word to describe what this behavior is, as a former kid, that wasn't humorous, and you would have been put into special ed if that was your vocabulary. To be clear, i was not offended, just saddened about the digression of intelligence, a two hour celebration of ignorance.

Good point.

What we are missing is personalized system names, for one user only. The way I can name my ships the way I like, and it makes it easier for me to search for the one I need.

So for a player (architect) only, on their computer, a system SYG REGION PI-2 TQ-ZZ3 will be displayed as "Finished, metals and HT" or something, "My first system"... everybody else will see it as astronomically correct name.

No worries. This sounds like it would leave the Galaxy Map alone, and give the Architect some hidden way to sort and prioritize systems. Maybe System Architects could create a bookmark 'code' for each system. He/She could then link that code to interested parties making it easier to navigate and communicate about the map.

Vanity renames of a systems scientific designation seems a lot like renaming the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America...

I know. But no one told Orwell to stop "writing that drivel".
Elite Forums. Where the concept of granting player's freedom over the universe (that they contribute to both financially and personally) is viewed as Orwellian because they may think a name in a video game is too silly.

This is literally what I'm reading right now. The concept of player freedom being compared to George Orwell's writings.

Not like we won't have Stars in the future named after toilet paper companies anyway if we had Elite's level of technology.

Do I gotta bring up how many IRL towns and cities are named after personal silicone products?
