Colour in SPAAAACE

It all depends on the star system, the same as in Frontier.
Here's some concept of a city in space. All the orbital objects are kept aligned towards the distant but highly radioactive neutron star stellar companion of the bright star to the right of the image. Each object has heavy shielding (both powered and physical) in this direction, to protect their delicate human occupants, with the rest of the object in the radiation shadow of that shielding. Many of the objects rotate independently, to give some level of artificial gravity, with the large ring rotating very slowly.

I know its early yet, but I hope that realism takes a backseat (in the cargo hold?) in order to give us systems out there with notable use of colour. So far everything has bee lovely orange, red, brown, gold... but all with that general hue.

I'd like to hope that we'll see some systems bathed in blue, green, purple, et all to better give us variety in our travels.

Yes I agree. Varied colors would avoid monotony. A little less of realism and more colors, it is good to me

Bleh. Gods I hope not. I loathed that about the X-Series...

I'm very much hoping they don't go for excessive colour.
But my preferring near monochrome star-scapes has less to do with realism, I just find it more beautiful.
It's like when I lie on the ground gazing at the night sky on a clear night.
I simply find the elegant near-monochrome of an endless firmament rather gorgeous, and something that can't really be improved by an ingratiating guff of colour!

(Saying all that though, I would probably prefer less orange in the UI aesthetic!)

The major attraction for me in terms of E: D's visual style, is the relative realism.
I have Star Citizen for all the hollywood style, *bling*bling* colored stuff.

If anything I want to see a stronger contrast between bright and dark. (Like space photos, where the dark side of an asteroid/comet is pitch black)

Speaking of the X-series and complete darkness. There was a system in X3:TC that was pitch black, no visible stars, no visible space dust....and as a result it was the most scary and moody place in the entire game.
(I'm not saying I want every system to be like that, it's just an example of something different)

I agree. And shadows that are cast too. I'm sure they're just work in progress at the moment, but cast shadows are rather soft edged and poorly defined right now

I really like the realistic starfield. I wouldn't want them to add colour where is does not belong. I won't say, that some systems in the X series don't look spectacular. Same for some star citizen screenshots. There is beautiful stuff out there. For Elite however, which uses a as realistic as possible simulation of our galaxy, I think it would be like breaking something inherently important if they were to make systems colourful and spectacular by adding colours and nebulas and stuff just for the sake of making it look slightly more pretty.

IMHO there should be enough places that offer interesting views in our galaxy and I'm looking forward to how that will be implemented. I have high hopes for the exploration system proposed, hoping it will make such discoveries potentially rewarding beyond their own inherent beauty.
