Newcomer / Intro Combat Build

Hey everyone, me again! I'm basically just looking for experienced players to check my build again... Sorry ha.

I've posted an early trading build and an early exploring build, now for combat. I have a Viper build here which is about half a mil. I don't really want to spend any more than half a mil, so can anyone suggest any improvements without bumping the cost up too much? Viper

Thanks!

I should probably add: If this build is overkill and I can reduce my price tag (with the same ship) then please let me know! I'm planning to hunt in RESes.

Edit: I've double posted, please disregard the other thread. Bit of a browser hiccup.

Immeadiately I would change Med HP's to 2F/G MC's, more effective against the badder ships once shields are down.
Personally I always try to find a way to get the 3km KWS into the setup as 2KM on the E-rated one is a little too up-close and personal for my taste.

Hey Kalius
I've just caught up on your trading thread also.
Get yourself an Adder asap.
You can chop and change modules in outfitting without losing any money according to what you are doing at the time.
You will be able to trade a bit, then gear up for RES farming bounties and ultimately setting out on a long haul explore if you decide to do so.
When you switch ships and trade-in your current one you lose 10% on the value so all things considered get the Adder and stick with it until you can upgrade to the Cobra which is a much better multi-purpose ship.
When you have done all those things and have money to burn you can go back and try out all the different ships for fun (which is what I am currently doing now).
:) Good Luck.

I agree with Crispy regarding the 2F/G MC's.

Here, take a look at my Viper: http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=60M,7u57u54ws4ws01Q3wo,2-5A5K5A3m5K5K3c,03w7Q49qm2Uc
It's a little bit more expensive but I've been using it for quite a while now and it works really well.

I'm happy with the 2km KWS. 2km is a good engagement range anyway. Not too much damage falloff but enemy turrets will have a hard time hitting you.

ps.: As far as bountyhunting goes I really prefer the viper over the cobra due to its stronger shields and much smaller target profile.

Yeah I was thinking of getting my Hauler soon as so I can grind the rest of the way to an Adder then I can build up a stockpile of credits. I'll be honest though, the Cobra doesn't sound very appealing to me. At least not for combat. I want a very agile and maneuverable ship and the Cobra looks a bit bulky. But as you say, if I'm chopping and changing a lot then maybe the Cobra is the way to go. I'll stick with getting my Hauler then my Adder for now and see where I go from there.

The other reason I want a smaller more agile ship for combat is basically so I get used to that for PvP too.

Nice setup mate, I'm starting to see how this all works a bit more. So, are turrets more of an issue than missiles? I see you've went for Chaff over point defense. I also see you've spent over a 100k on an interdictor; is it really necessary? Obviously it would be nice to have, but early on is it worth the 100k extra?

Both are pretty useless in PvE, no need to carry Chaff or PDT. Besides, turrets are unaffected by Chaff atm.
For PvP, you need Chaff to combat gimbals. No one carries missiles in PvP and even if they did, they barely hurt your shields any way.

PDT are useless on a combat ship, it's a waste of a slot.

Only equip an Interdictor if you plan in interdicting people :)

Hi

I went straight for an Adder (I think I may have posted on your trading thread) and it was a fab multi role trader / BH ship.

I then Skipped the Viper and went straight for a Cobra and the Cobra is pretty good in a fight I have to say.
I tend to play a mixed role most of the time at the moment while I save up for a T6. I usually pick up a "source me this commodity" mission and when I am flying in and out of the systems looking for the required commodity I usually check out the local nav beacon for a little while to see who is a Wanted pilot. I often make more from shooting down wanted ships than I do for the commodity that I deliver. It really does boost your income.
The Cobra is more agile than it looks and no slouch in a fight.

I'm running a Viper as well, usually pulling 500,000+ per hour, made 750,000 in 45 minues this morning including bounties from KWS.

I run 2x Small Gimballed Beam Lasers, they melt through shields like a hot knife triugh butter.

2x Medium Multicannons, they chew through armor like a lukewarm knife through cold buttet and through Power Plants like a bullet through a melon.

Kill Warrant Scanner and Chaff.

Upgraded thrusters, hull armor, power distributor. Power Plant if you need it to get a better range KWS and FSD or shields, but the first 2 not necessary and I haven't been able to find better shields.

This build totals in at about 3.5 million, but I started with the weapons, KWS, and upgraded Power Distributor, all else stock.

Solo Anacondas wuth ease. =D

Can I just ask a few specifics since I've never been in combat other than the training missions (which I've done dozens of times ha).

The KWS: Do I have to do anything with this other than get in range of a ship? Or do I have to manually 'scan' every target I fix on?

Shields/Armor: Do you guys have your energy weapons in one fire group to drop their shields, then switch fire groups to MCs to finish their hull? Or do you just hit them with everything constantly?

Bounties: Will KWS bounties be from the same system? Or will I have to travel all over the place after every 'farm' of a RES/Navpoint (probably RES)? In fact, rather than answering that question, does anyone want to give me a VERY brief crash course in bounty hunting? ha I know... I'm demanding.

KWS: Need to scan targets manually. It takes 10 seconds and range varies by rating.

Shields/Armour: I do. 2 Pulse and 1 Beam on Primary fire, 2 MC's on secondary. When the lasers run dry, and shields are down, I switch to MC's while the lasers recharge. Usually only need them on bigger ships.

Bounties: Not only from same system, it's usually the major factions. So when you scan a target, you get an extra bounty from for instance Empire you need to pick up in an Empire system. I take a trip to a nearby Empire and Alliance system now and then and claim a few millions from each every few days.

I have my KWS on a fire group by it self. So when I am not fighting, I have that fire group selected.
It stop accidental shooting and I use it before I attack anything anyway.
Scan target, switch fire group and let loose a broadside.

Though I don't bother scanning anything below a Viper, I can kill them faster than I can scan them anyway.

I have 2 weapon groups. The first one has my lasers both in my secondary fire and MCs in primary. Second group is just my KWS.

To use the KWS, just get in range and hold down the trigger until the blue bar fills and says Complete. All it does is reveal if the target has any bounties in other jurisdictions than the one you're in now. Some times a ship that registers as clean may have bounties on them from another jurisdiction that won't be revealed until you scan them. It's best to scan before you engage, but you can scan at any time.

To collect on bounties just go to any station in the jurisdiction where you need to collect, then select Station Services > Contacts > Local Security Offices. From there the second option down is where you get your paycheck. You can see other jurisdictions where you may have money waiting for you by accessing your left interface screen and going to the Transactions tab.

Keep in mind that getting blown loses ALL uncollected bounties!

Best way to do it is to find a Resource Extraction Site, or RES. Or a Nav Beacon.

I set up my Fire Group 1 (FG1) with Lasers on Fire Button 1 (Primary) and KWS on Fire Button 2 (Secondary).
I then move across to create my FG2 with lasers on Primary and MC's on Secondary.
I then have FG3 with only my Disco on Secondary (no primary).
That way you can start your KWS and about half way through the scan you can start taking down their shields, once shields are down if it is slow going to finish them with lasers I switch group and rip them apart with the MC's.
**Top tip: The minute they blow up switch back to FG1 so you don't accidentally shoot an innocent with your MC's thinking you are going to scan them**
**For this same reason I keep my Disco on Secondary
I am in FG3 when in supercruise which then allows me one button press once I have dropped out to get FG1 up for KWS and then one switch to MC's if I really need them (I'm tight and don't like buying ammo unless it's a huge bounty).

I also see you've spent over a 100k on an interdictor; is it really necessary?
Nah, you can easily skip that one and replace it with a shield cell bank. That is probably more useful anway.
There are enough bounties to be found at USS, Navbeacons or Resourceareas.

Similar to CrispyLeper I usually put the KWS on the same firegroup as my lasers, so I can already start stripping down the shields while I perform the scan. Then I switch back to my primary group with has the lasers on one button and MCs on the other.

Oh and if the target moves out of view, just keep the scanner button pressed and it will resume roughly where it stopped when you aim on it again. (the longer the target is out of view, the more scanning progress is lost)
