Combat is Impossible...and Not at all Fun

A rated modules are not the best - just the priciest.

You can lighten the ship up with some details rated stuff and dirty drive tuning will help.

Throttle control is a big one - if you're running full throttle, you're doing yourself a great disservice when it comes to maneuvering - not that there are not times for it, but just as there is no one singular be-all, end-all ship the same is true for the amount of throttle applied. Keeping the throttle "in the blue" (or whatever color it happens to be), does do wonders for your maneuverability, as do the number of Eng pips used, but.. you still can't take your hand off the throttle during a fight. Cutting back, throttling up, and using Thrusters as well all play a huge part in your overall performance.

I tend to run a lot of D-class thrusters for the weight, though I've used others in other ships as well depending on the overall outfitting, but it almost always comes back to throttle control and thrusters for maneuvering - be it FA on or FA off.

There was a time I found combat to be exceptionally hard as well. now I just find it exceptional.

2. Do some of the training scenarios
You cant do the training because it put you up in a Sidewinder against an Eagle, and after that (if you survive ) against TWO Eagles.

EVERY NPC ship, even a Cobra can win ANY turnbattle against players.

I fail to understand how to defend against this.

You are required to put enormous time, sweat, blood and utter frustration into combat in this game (not to mention the immense rebuy cost) untill you are 'allowed' to play.

No place for non powergamers here, move along, nothing to see...

But my A Rated Courier cannot out turn Viper III and Cobra III. I cant stay behind anyone, or get positive on them. AI ships are flipping and turning literally on a dime. No amount of combined thrust - back/forward with up/down - NOTHING works.

Seriously mate, I can stay behind any ship in my D-rated Eagle!!

I'm pretty sure half of people are playing this six-degrees-of-movement game with controls bound for three of those degrees.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you here considering I was able to do these training missions.

The Cobra is a hot ship, I still have mine, but I digress. Players can't win a turning battle? Tell that to the hundreds of NPCs that were turned to dust in front of my Vulture. Mind you this was before I learned FAOff at all. It was also before I even considered engineering, before you trot out that old favorite.

No, but if you admit no fault or shortcoming of your own and say that the game is broken, impossible, only no-lifers can get results, or some other hyperbolic nonsense; expect to be met with derision and contempt by people on here who know you're talking nonsense and are tired of hearing it.

I use FA-off for loops. I combine that with Up/Down thrust. I use forward/back to help with tighter turns.

Every AI ship I see can out turn and outmaneuver me. Every fight. Cobra III, Viper...I have seen Pythons out turn my Courier. And that is with 4 pips to high performance engines and Clean Tuning at Tier 3 (cant find stuff for Dirty Drives and cant be bothered to search for it).

Sigh.

Its just time to move on. I appreciate it. I really do. Especially since I have yet to see the (nigh inevitable) git gud reply. I really do appreciate the help. But I'm frustrated and honestly, the sad truth is, I'm no longer enjoying Elite. Combat is simply too frustrating and everything outside of combat is more time sink/wait wall/load screen than it is gaming.

My lack of willingness does to be honest stem from a lack of free time. Its not a lack of desire. Its more...I have about 10 hours per week to game. Across ALL of my gaming interests. I simply dont have the time to "train" at video games. I sometimes wish I did, but I simply dont.

Thanks. The sentiment is appreciated. Really it is.

Don't worry. You will not miss much. There are many illogical gameplay choices the devs made which has caused many to leave just as you. You are in the majority now. The minority are those who still play it.

Probably everyone in this thread is a better combat pilot than me TBH, but all I have been doing recently that seems to work is hitting the blue zone on your thrust, and hit down or side or both latteral thruster directions and keep circling. Adjust speed and pitch as needed to keep in sights. FAOFF doesnt seem to make much difference for me so don't use it much, but still win most battles. Gets a bit dull tho.

I cannot get behind even an Ananconda these days but if you are strafing then it seems very little will hit you. Just my 2 cents .. back to the experts :p

(Applause!)

This is what I do, with one or two tweaks, and I even made a popular thread about it, admittedly from a PvP perspective, but the AI is indeed programmed to miss if you do it:

Maybe its me. Maybe its Engineered NPC ships. Maybe its a bit of both.

Its a shame. About once a week, I get the urge to dive in and enjoy some combat. And for months I was having fun. Felt I had a fair chance at actually winning a fight now and then.

And all of a sudden, an A Rated Courier cannot even outmaneuver multi purpose and lesser fighters. And not only can I not outmaneuver anything...I dont even stand a chance. These ships are simply too good.

Alas, I think its finally time to admit that Elite simply isnt the game for me. I obviously am not willing to put in the time to "train" my "combat skills" ( i have a life outside of Elite) so I think perhaps its just time to move on.

Shame. I used to enjoy this game. But it is simply impossible now. And everything outside of combat is boring and unengaging - basically, its just scoop, watch load screen, repeat - that I cant be bothered. I want game play, not spectating.

Maybe you should have learned to better pick your targets instead of trying to fight fast agile fighters.
I had no probs in an unengineered courier staying behind a master vulture and anything larger than a vulture was even easier. FDL though, bit of a sweaty target.

Do you have a slide throttle? If you use buttons for thrust then FA off is much more difficult as the game does not remember you last throtle position.

I don't know why you clicked on page 14 of the forum, because that's where the thread was before you replied, but please read it before posting. The issue was already solved 5 pages ago. He used the wrong thrusters. Nothing to see here. Please move along ;)
