Combat logging fix suggestion

Look... we all know you can’t add a “disconnect” delay because that would lead to people flying into stations/planets/suns from buzz crashes. So I get it’s a tough fix, but here’s your fix. If someone combat logs, we should be able to contact FDev and say the person logged. You should be able to look at the time and the account to see if they did log off. If the evidence presented shows they did combat log, FDev can take appropriate actions, whatever that might be. (I.E. Bans, fines, make their ship look like a chicken for a week.)

What you describe can already be done (report the player). However you won't find out what (if any) punishment was applied unless the player decides to tell you or make it public.

Personally I'd prefer a largely automated system that simply discourages CLogging. Existing thread link:

Combat Logging Punishment Proposal

That would pretty easy to correct. They could simply tell you. It’s not Doctor/patient or Lawyer/client confidentiality. They could simply say, “Hey we looked into it and decided to do this.”

Regardless of any legality of passing on information, I would not be in favour of that. I can think of no purpose other than trolling the CLogger.

I would support anonymous stats reported regularly: 15 CLoggers received 3 day bans in March, a further 4 repeat offenders received 28 day bans. That kind of thing.

There is some benefit to showing anonymous stats, they act as a deterrent and satisfy the desire (such as your own) to know that something is being done.

You’d have nothing to worry about unless you combat log. If you report someone on Xbox live, they tell you the results of the report. They don’t have to go in as great of detail as I jokingly referred. It could be as simple as, “we’ve received your complaint and find it valid. Actions will be taken.”

This has already been done to death.

I've been accused of CLing as a result of the game freezing up as I jumped away from combat.
The wizard in question commented that it was a big coincidence that the game froze at that particular moment.
I pointed out that it wasn't much of a coincidence at all because it happens fairly frequently.

Point is, it'd be absurd to penalise people for something which is likely to be a fault with the game, itself.

Well, all you need to do is look at a person's history to find out if they regularly leave the game while in combat.
Nope, sorry.
If a person was a dedicated CLer, all they'd need to do would be to task-kill the game at random times while playing and their history would show "random" disconnections as well as disconnections during combat.

There is no way to prove combat-logging to a standard required to enact punitive measures.

Right... cause someone is going to do that. In fact, everyone will do it. You’ve cracked the case. We should never do anything regardless.

I mean, seriously... we’re talking about people that rage quit to avoid paying a rebuy... not Oceans 11 planning a bank heist.

Also... TONS of people flat out are dumb enough to send you a taunting message after the fact admitting to it... so... I don’t know what mad geniuses you’ve seen combat logging, but...

We're also talking about a game where random disconnects ARE common and where it's easy for people to task-kill even if they don't suffer from random disconnects.

Anybody who puts themselves in a position where it can be proven that they CL is an idiot.
For those who possess more than 2 brain-cells, it'll always be possible to provide plausible deniability.

But it is like the undead. It keeps coming back to haunt us.

Not to mention dodgy internet connections.

There are more ways than task-killing. My VPN client has an internet kill switch setting that kills the internet connection when disconnected. It is quicker than ending the task.

Not that it is much use in PvE

This is the important point I feel. Intent.

In the majority of cases intent cannot be established beyond reasonable doubt, so no punishment can reasonably be applied. However the honest disconnect would likely result in the player immediately wanting to return to the mode they left, to continue where they left off. The cynical disconnect can simply be compelled to take the same path (rejoin the mode they left or choose not to play).

Are you familiar with lag generators? Your "proposal" would encourage the grief team to use them to abuse other players through the simple mechanic of forcing a disconnect, then reporting the disconnected player.

As to your abusive behavior, get a clue. If the fix was THAT simple, it would have already been implemented.

Maybe this is uncharitable, and my apologies if so - but I still feel all console gamers should be given a free OSI model plushy with their purchase.
