Combat Noob - Resource Ext. Sites

Would you suggest that a noob wanting to spend time in a new combat build start in a resource site that is in a High Security System? Perhaps look for a Res LOW site in a High Security System?

I am just getting started in combat (even after 800 hours....sigh). Thanks!

Yes!

Sart with LOW RES sites, and pick your targets, remember that system security and basically everyone else will join in when you do start shooting, so they will help you clear up the baddies.

Don't be afraid to run away, if you are taking too much damage.

Practice flipping PIPs between SYS WEP and ENG, soon you will be soloing Anacondas!!

You could also wait for system authority to start attacking a target and then join in which improves your chances of doing a "Brave Sir Robin" if you find yourself in trouble. But still wait for the basic scan to finish first, showing the target as Wanted before you start shooting or it will end badly. ;)

Stock Eagle. Haz Res. You'll be fine...

:D

(I'm I'm currently in to process of editing a video on exactly how that turned out...!)

Joking aside, low Res, high security, try not to shoot the police, but follow them from target to target, sort like a wingman.

Low and High Resource Extraction sites have security.

bear in mind, just because they have Security does not immediately state that said security will save your bottom, just when you need it saving.

The best approach is to first scan any ship you have your sights on. Even if it is currently being engaged by security. You must see 'Wanted' in the left-hand ship readout, before you are legally allowed to engage it.

next assess the ship. Is it currently in a fight ? Is the fight with security? How much security?

A small eagle in a fight seems easy prey. Well.. If that is an Elite eagle, it'll turn on you immediately. And an Elite eagle vs a non-ready combat ship/pilot will make a mess of you.

Also bear in mind the actual ships versus your ship. You might be in an Anaconda which turns slow, while up against an agile Vulture. Just because you see a Clipper at 37% health does not mean it is easy prey. For sure, against my Cutter it's the flying dead, but against a newbie pilot or ship, it'll turn the tables very fast.

Also, bear in mind that ships of 'Master' rank and above have engineered modules. And, against non engineered ships, they'll eat you up.

You need Horizons to compete.

Food for thought ;)

Best practise when new, is to allow security to 'soften' the target up, then you sweep in and finish it off and claim the bounty.

Specific NPC Ship models tend to behave fairly similarly. So you can learn their patterns and start predicting them as you practice. Most of those habits will be bad if you ever plan on going the PvP route. Some attack NPC patterns can be tough in certain ships.

In the beginning you should focus on learning your shields. Use a weapon-setup that doesn't require intense power management or heat management. This way you can focus on getting to know when it is time to get the hell out of dodge. Always have either a boost, or a boost charging. Iow. If you're pipping down on engines, pip up again if you spend that boost.

Learn how to attain attack paths that won't put you in front of your opponent's guns. The NPCs "cheat", so unless there is very clear disparity in durability in your favor you won't be able to just slug it out. And even if you can slug it out, it's inefficient due downtime between fights if you take heavy shield damage.

Weapon mount is a matter of preference. If you're a mouse user fixed weapons is nifty to learn, for stick I prefer gimbal personally. Remember that when enemy releases chaff, turn off targeting to fire your gimbals fixed.

Weapon type is mostly about works for you. Something that strips shield fast on primary fire and something to take down hulls fast for secondary. The simplest setup is pulse laser / MC combo. On larger ships, use subtype targeting to aim for the power plant... you'll often incapacitate the ship well before it would explode from just plinking on the hull.

Most combat-focused ships are good, size isn't the end-of-all things in elite. Smaller ships with less powerful shields / hull will force you to be better at manouvering, larger ships better at anticipating your opponent. If it's all about maximum efficiency, a well equipped Fer-de-lance with bi-weaves is tough to beat. Personally I found that flying the Vulture taught me the most about clearing hazres.

Haz Rez is actually better for a so-called noob pilot.

You can't get Wanted by terrible shooting ( friendly fire ) and then have every other ship attack you including the Security Ships.

It is much safer. Just pick your targets wisely.

For non-scooping I agree. For scooping, it can be tougher.

If you've that little combat experience, start at a Nav Beacon. Learn to complete your scans before opening fire. Lean on system authority ships for support, and only pick one fight at a time. Once you get the feel for it, then move into Low RES, then High RES and finally Haz RES. Your budget will thank you.

I would go for a High RES as low res tend to run out of targets quite quickly.

Watch for Wings of enemies (denoted by the number in brackets after the target name) as taking on wings is hard work if you're not very experienced.

Avoid the temptation to keep the throttle maxed and learn to keep it in the blue zone.

Juggle pips, your focus should be on engines or shields unless you are behind your enemy.

Use boost to turn quickly.

Use lateral thrust while turning to stay / get behind your target.

Viper MK3 is a good choice to learn combat. Pretty tough and not too twitchy. As you get better you can learn to use FAOFF in one, which is a really useful skill to develop as you move to bigger ships/harder targets.

If you're on PC and around this weekend I'd be happy to wing up to give you a hand / some pointers. Feel free to PM me.
