Combat Zones on planetary surface with Ships and SRVs... why are they not a thing?

Exactly, the Odyssey description says "multi-layered, deep, tactical environment where Commanders, SRVs and Starships converge". Not to mention the job adverts they ran looking for a programmer with experience in driving AI.

I guess the answer to the OP question is no, not a limitation, but they hadn't had a reason to write SRV AI before now.

I slapped some guns and missiles on my DBX purely because it looks like an attack helicopter, and I’m getting shivers just imagining a strafing run with the class 3 multicannon...

SRVs aside, would it be possible to have a CZ on planet surface now? Gravity would play a big role in the fight and it would make it very interesting...

The way CZs work now I imagine the ships spawn within a set radius when you enter the instance. If that were done close to the surface ships and objects spawning in later could appear inside the planet.

Basically, I'm sure they could have done it in the past but it wouldnt work to just transfer the existing CZ code to work at planet level. All the changes required to take account of the planet will presumably have been written specially for Odyssey now, as it sounds like we're going to get something similar to CZs or missions with multiple vehicles at ground level.

I have actually been attacked by a pirate in deciat while on planet in an srv after i accidentally shot a landed crusader. He was flying around blasting at me while I basically ran for my life lol. I was able to return fire once the authorities showed up but they eventually drove him off and killed him. I did get a bounty though. I highly recommend the experience. Deciat 3 maybe? can't remember. I stumbled across him twice now looking for selenium or was it arsenic... anyway, yeah.

When Horizons first launched, NPC ships simply weren't good enough pilots to avoid slamming into the ground during combat maneuvers. They've gotten better, but this explains why it was never in the mission list to begin with.

You are supposed to be doing the currently available surface combat missions (data-scanning, generator-disabling, that sort of thing) in your SRV, not using your ship like a giant hovertank. That there's no feasible mechanism to force people to abandon their highly weaponized deathships and jump into a fragile little space-buggy armed with spitball-guns is probably another reason why open combat scenarios were never implemented. I am curious to see exactly how Odyssey will bring balance to the Force.

Funny you should ask this. When I went to visit the Dweller at Black Hide on WYRD a couple of days ago (as I wanted to engineer a module, of course) I could have sworn I saw conflict zones on his moon. I could see the red dots and I kept getting warned about entering a combat zone when going there. I didn't go visit them so I can't tell you what they were exactly and I don't know if SRVs were involved.

I built a ground assault ship using a fed gunship. It's been collecting dust as there is no reason for it. I hope odyssey adds planetary CZ's. I would love to fly over and rain down missiles on the enemy like the harbinger of death.

Anyone here play starfox 64 multiplayer back in the day? Ships, tanks, and guys with guns on foot could converge then. I figured it out way back. On foot < In Vehicle < In Ship.
I sort of feel like odyssey will resemble that in the way that while running around is neat for a little bit, you stand no chance against faster, better armed vehicles, and those stand no chance against even faster and better armed ships.

The only real reason to be on foot is if you are storming the inside of a base, (where there'd be no danger of vehicles) or trying to take someone else's ship.
