Comets are already present in the Stellar Forge - you can drop into normal space close to them!

Today I was investigating the curious case of the Pareco system; it has one star, and six stations. The oddity is that all six stations are around 11000Ls from the main star, and they're all orbiting ... nothing in particular.

This has been a point of interest for some time, and some bold people have even theorised as to what might be there. But there was no way to be sure... until now!

I was looking around the centre of the non-existent object that the stations seemed to be orbiting. One of the difficulties with this was that the stations are in very close orbit - several of them are even within 1000km of each other, allowing you to easily travel between the stations without supercruise (and sometimes producing interesting mismatches between the station you're docking at, and where your HUD thinks your current location is...)
This also means, though, that it was difficult to escape the 1000km sphere of influence that stations exert. There is a little space in the middle where you're not covered by any of them, and it was here that something momentarily flashed up on my HUD...

I had to go back with a Shadowplay recording to see what it actually said, but there it was! Next step, actually stop at it...
This took quite a few attempts to get the timing right, but eventually...

You can drop into normal space in its sphere of influence!
Anticlimactically, but unsurprisingly, there's nothing there. :D

The comet's sphere of influence appears to be about 50km radius, and even that is cut into by Asire Dock's sphere.
If you move closer to Asire, you move into a new instance and can potentially go to the outpost (but can also go back to the comet if you travel in the right direction).
If you move 50km out towards deep space, you're thrown back out into the main Pareco star's frame of reference, and thus the comet and all the stations orbit away from you (unless you exit in front of it, in which case you're immediately thrown back into the comet's sphere).

Figuring this out was done with the great help of CMDRs Ozric and Millstonebarn - many thanks!

The position of the comet can be seen here, marked by the wing beacon (thanks to Ozric for the image):

It can be tricky to manage to drop onto the comet given that it has such a small sphere of influence, but it is definitely possible! :)

Unfortunately, if there are other comets in the game it won't be so feasible to drop onto them - this one was conveniently about 1000km away from a constant point of reference, and I still nearly missed it when I was actively looking for "something odd". For the general case, I fear we'll have to wait for Frontier to add some shiny visuals and signposts... :D

Awesome work as always! Nice cropping of the image, Toku and DBOBE are watching you...

It's always been said that comets were in the game, we just couldn't see them yet and it's really great to see that is actually the case! I've been waiting for Comet visuals to be added since release and I really hope that they're not too far away... Though I'm obviously not holding my breath as for the vast majority this won't be a priority at all.

So this means that there are stations which orbit a comet? Hard to imagine that's working as intended.
Anyway, great find for confirming this!

Not necessarily, they may be organised in a Klemperer Rosette that just happens to be following the same orbital path as the comet with the comet at the centre so they can track it and do research.

Yeah, it would entirely be possible: what I meant that it's hard to imagine that the Stellar Forge generating six stations around a body that's not yet implemented, is working as intended. Especially with all of them being industrial and/or agricultural stations. Of course, it might be a handcrafted system, perhaps as a Kickstarter reward.

Although what came to my mind first was that this would be like Stellaris, "oops, we started constructing a ring world but forgot that we don't actually have the tech for them yet".

I'm not entirely sure it's hand crafted. The reason I made the race there in the first place was because I'd been intrigued ever since Michael Brookes said there were stations orbiting comets  Though as I said earlier Comets have always been part of the Stellar Forge, I'm sure I remember them saying rogue asteroids are in there too. Even though you can't see them at the moment, they need to be there ready for when you can so it doesn't throw anything out when they "switch them on".

very impressive! we had some livey discussions in the subforums here, whether the stations in pareco orbit a comet or not - well, there is proff, thanks for sharing!

This is awesome ... proof at last! I first became aware of Pareco from the "Case of the missing comet" Buckyball Race and have argued a few times here on the forum that those stations were believed to be orbiting a Stellar Forge generated comet. Finally I have a thread I can send people to.

And now for some music ...

Excellent research Evsandiary! Well done.

Comets have had data points in the game since before 1.0, Frontier simply never completed the graphics for them. It's kind of sad that in 2.5 years, with all of what we have gotten, that comets still are not fully implemented but still only a half implemented feature.

"Pareco comet 2"

This means this must not be the only comet orbiting Pareco, right?

Awesome discovery Alot!
Now we only need a new race here after the "Case of the Missing Comet", something like "Case of the Comet We Now Know It's Definitely There But For Some Reason Is Nowhere To Be Seen". Maybe we can cut the "definitely" to shorten it up a bit.

i'm waiting for comets to appear since beta so hopefully it will happen in future ... for awesome look and interesting locations
