If you think you are going to be more than a few minutes, playing in Open it's a simple courtesy to enter the dock rather than sit on top. Doesn't cost anything except a click.

If you enter the hanger it still stops other players and NPCs landing so the only courtesy move is to either log off to main menu or go to solo.

Could you imagine how it would be if you were in the hanger and another player or NPC used the pad? Requesting launch: Launch Denied!

Would be infuriating, imagine the ingame character getting clostrophobic though.
