Ok, thanks for your reply Ashley...

For these reasons I have changed my commanders name, good job I found out before the 4th ;)

Looks like I might have to buy multiple accounts

Thanks for the feeedback and advice

Having dug a bit deeper, I discover that the notification email had been swept up as spam by Virgin Media/Blueyonder before it got as far as my email client.

Luckily, they don't delete spam until it has been in the spam folder for thirty days...

Thanks again,

Johno

"Your name forms part of the naming database (so your name will be one of those used randomly for non-player in-game characters)."

What is the best way to go about this? Do we need to choose first+last names to have one/both used for random NPC name generation?

What if someone selects just a single name? Will it still be used for random name generation in some way?

You can use a full name or a single name, we will accept either.

Unlike some players I assume most NPCs will have first+last names generated?

In this case should we just put in a first and last name and will both then be used randomly in the generation process?

Both will be used, whether they will remain combined or we will split first and last names into seperate databases is yet to be decided I'm afraid!

I've tried holding Ashley back, but it's getting to me as well, may be two Banhammers on the way :D

As long as they both have unique first names, then they would be acceptable Commander names :p

You know if I were to be unoriginal, I'd at least try to be original in my unoriginality... Commander Barkley, Gnarls Barkley? :)

What! i dont mind full names being used to randomly generate new names but i was thinking that at least my full first second and third name would be one of the full names used not split up.

Yes I must agree! Having your name in the naming database is a pledge level in its own right:

Your name* forms part of the naming database (so your name will be one of those used randomly for non-player in-game characters), plus all rewards above.

It doesn't say anything about being chopped up and combined with other people's names! FD have to honour this, surely?

Can't say I'm surprised by the list of names. Way too much lack of imagination going around nowadays. There are people who think fanfic is high art.

Now I'd considerered paying homage to my favourite Capt. But I'd have taxed 2 brain cells and used Nathan Renolds or Malcolm Fillion instead of trying to be a poor imitation.

And the likelihood is that it absolutely will be, we're just not at the stage to confirm it just yet so I have to be ambiguous about it. ;)

I had quite the opposite in mind as to what FD would do.

If you put a name like "John Smith" then they would split it into 2 parts and add each one to a database. Then randomly pick names from each to make a new one via some procedural process - Add a few more for variety and voila - naming routine done!

We wait to see :)

Lol

On the eve of the Forum Frontier....

All the stars before us,
All the Shepard's without flocks....

Or, as it turns out, a chance of getting that name! Ahaha :D

Anyway we can get a
Code:
select count(name) from names group by name
to give us an idea of our chances, or if we should cut our losses and change ??

This means KS rewards were specified - and people were influenced by them - without their actual form being known at the time of specification.

That's properly tantamount to deception. Something was said, when it was *known* that exactly what it would mean was at that time unknown.

This is rather fast and loose and I think likely to cause trouble.

I thought in the same line as the OP; that the name would be used in full.

The problem here is that this is not clear and it is not clear because FD don't yet know. As such the KS reward is misleading; you're being influenced to contribute by something which quite possibly doesn't exist.

What nonsense. If your NPC name is, say, Richard Morris (as mine is), and you see an NPC called Richard Morris, what does it matter whether FD generated the name by gluing together "Richard" and "Morris", or by picking "Richard Morris" from a list. In both cases the end result was that I saw my NPC name.

Or, rather, someone did. There are likely to be a very large number of NPC names, perhaps some from a single list, and others by combining a "firstname" with a "lastname". Most of us will never see our chosen NPC.
