So the names are granted in order of whomever pledged earlier; what if we changed our pledge at some point?

I chose a real name that might have been chosen by a few others. I did pledge very early though (within the first day), however later in the process I changed my pledge (pretty much the final day). So would that make me high on the priority list or would I have been pushed down to the very bottom?

You can see your pledge date under your profile on the backers web app.

However, it is the date of your original pledge, and not any adjustments

Aah, thanks. Hopefully that gives me a good chance, although since some 6000 backers also pledged in the first couple of days, who knows...

FD only ever promised to 'add your name to the naming database' no promise was ever given to whether you will see that name in the universe.

The Kickstarter has the following text;

"Your name forms part of the naming database (so your name will be one of those used randomly for non-player in-game characters), plus all rewards above."

"Your name" is this context means your actual real-life name. There is no mention of "the name you choose". The text says your name.

Then as you see it goes on, to say your name will be used randomly for NPC characters.

"Used randomly" could mean any number of things, including a name database where names are chopped and combined.

What if your name gets allocated to a ship yard on a gas giant satellite moon in sector 22,-15. The probabilities of you coming across your name are infinitesimal.

The KS text specifically says NPCs.

Nice, didn't spot that. Glad to see mine does indeed say 06 Nov 2012, so I'm a day one backer! Usually I'm pretty late to find out about these things.

got mine in on the 5th November, i was among the first of the pledgers. i do remember being shocked seeing the amount go up to a qtr of a million within the first few days, i think there may have been about 150 pledgers before me.

Odd, it says launched Nov 6th on the Kickstarter page. Was it actually open before then? Or are you cheating by being in a different country.

Still, day two backer ain't too bad...

shows

Launched: Nov 5, 2012
Funding ended: Jan 4, 2013

when I look at the KS page
Since it ended at 7pm on Jan 4, My guess is it launched at 7pm on the 5th (pure guess)
My pledge was some point before 9:45 am on Nov 6 due to the KS email about backing the project.

Completely useless stats froms kicktraq!! (unqiue backers per date)
Nov 5 - 351 backers
Nov 6 - 5826 backers
Nov 7 - 1267 backers

I had quite the opposite in mind as to what FD would do.

If you put a name like "John Smith" then they would split it into 2 parts and add each one to a database. Then randomly pick names from each to make a new one via some procedural process - Add a few more for variety and voila - naming routine done!

We wait to see :)

Exactly what I was thinking. :) The logical purpose of using one's name in a random generator is if the first and last names are split up. Otherwise it's not random generation if you just copy the full name over to an NPC.

But if you are Adam Vance for instance then each part will be added to a separate list, so you will see a lot of Adams around and a lot of Vances, and yes - by random occurrence - sooner or later you will come across an Adam Vance NPC.

The private forums will hopefully be going live next week as well (probably Monday), this includes the Private Backers forum, the DDF and the Writer’s forum. All of which should have things for you to get involved with pretty much straight away.

During the KS I was debating wether to go for the £75 pledge level or not, because I was interested in access to the Backers' Forum. However, that pledge level included a lot of things I'm not interested in or have no use for (boxed copy, access to second round of private beta, digital copy of soundtrack, my name forming a part of the naming database, digital copy of the sequel to The Dark Wheel) so in the end I decided against it.

Do you think you will be offering further refinements to upgrading our pledge levels in the future, so that it would be possible for me to pledge to get what I'm really interested in? Backers' Forum access for instance is not a "limited edition" pledge so there's no conflict there. I can understand you not wanting to drop the price for access to the DDF forum only, for instance.

Crikey, some people don't half get wound up about the details.

I'm just happy that the game is being made.

If they want to split my name up - good luck to them.

Could be difficult though - being the unimaginative person I am, I only managed to come up with a single name :)

I just didn't think of that, must be getting old

'Getting' Old? *smirks

Also for those trying to guesstimate their chances of getting their chosen name, don't forget even if you were the 2nd person to pledge, it only takes one person to have chosen the same name before you to leave you having to find a new name.

Finally, the I would like to offer my condolences to the poor soul who has to check though every single name request.

I was one of the first to back it too...

Then my paranoia and superstitious nature kicked in, when I noticed that it was the 13th project I had backed...

So my official day of backing did change somewhat...

About commander names... is it allowed to use characters from non UK/US alphabet? Like åäöü and so on?

Well, if you do, don't expect anybody to talk to you, since most of us us have no idea how to enter those chars as they are not on our keybords and require either charmap or some freaky ALT+0xxx keypresses.

I mean it gets difficult to distinguish between ÀÃÁÂÄÅ as you age and then your eyesight says NO :S Especially in the middle of a heated battle

Minti2

Deadly, But very fluffy...
Same here, 5th nov pledged, but am not to worried about my commander name being taken by someone else as its a mix of fiction and real name, if someone has picked it before me, am buying them beers for life!

...

Shepard (currently most popular!)
Fox
Malcolm Reynolds
Han Solo
Ace Rimmer
Picard
Starbuck
Adama
Skywalker
The Doctor
Kirk
Biggles
Maverick
Bond
Most one-syllable names and surnames (Smith, Jones, Bob & Dave particularly)
Most Colours (White & Black particularly)
Wot no Data?

My Commander name is part of my name and my NPC name is randomly generated gamer tag used in several games and has been unique several times so we shall see. If some one else has it I wont lose any sleep :)

The best option is if FD add a feature where KS backers can search for their name in the universe database and it tells them where they are.

Yay, another mission :)

I definitely want to hunt down my named NPC. No, hunt down is wrong, find, I definitely want to find my named NPC.
