Comms is too simple and too repetitive

There's a thread over on Steam which picks a bone I've had with Elite for a while, but unfortunately it's a necro so I'm not gonna post in it.

I'm gonna post here instead

Why, in a game that's all proc, is there only like 4 responses from pirates? Or one random wedding event with 2 or 3 lines?

Something I never understood in this game.

The whole comms situation is very bad. Why are cargo convoys dropped... waiting to be attacked? The writer should have made this make sense. "Engine trouble.. let's hope we don't get attacked" "I don't like this. Our rendezvous is late." "Well tell nav he better get his ass in gear and find that better sell spot because I'm not sitting like a duck out here forever"

but nope. none of that.

was it originally much more in-depth but all removed to try and encourage the user to forget about it because it was determined detrimental to the rest of the game?

at least remove the wedding/tourist things.

They could add 100 times the amount of comms and you would still spot the repeats - because humans are good at spotting patterns. Put it on the 'list of things to do when we have atmos planets and legs'

- and suggesting actually removing comms (weddings) in a post asking for more comms seems a bit ... conflicted ;)

Hm, Medical/Military Convoys actually give off the type of Comms the OP is desiring.
They're a tad rare though, plus they're typically not classified as Bounty Hunting/Mercenary. Just Piracy is an Option for all I know.

They've made a vast improvement with the voiceovers in CZs, some USSs, and anywhere security ships form up for combat.

Yet, as you say, even with the voiceovers, we can quickly spot the repeats .....
"I need backup .... repeat backup"

"I'm going down!"

etc. etc.
But a vast improvement that adds life to the game :)

Give 2 interns a summer job playing Elite as Roleplaying various scenarios and record their dialogues. In couple of weeks would have tons of dialogue to use. What could go wrong? ;)

Do you remember the olden days when you could use a radio tuner (sort of like the system scanner) and you could tune it to specific frequencies to hear the audio on a particular band. You could even press a button and turn it OFF.
Perhaps we could research this lost technology under a pyramid and institute it in our spacecraft?

This a topic that is resurrected intermittently, with FD crickets on response.

Maybe it's too difficult to change the software status quo. Unfortunately, it's another feature ignored except for a quick glance once in a while.

Would it really be that hard to write a few dozen pages of banter, one liners and responses and add it in? Such a small thing to add to the illusion of a living breathing universe.

When I first got into ED I thought everything was connected dynamic and persistent. While I had that illusion the game blew my mind. Over time that wears off rather quick and you see the reality. It seems like a minor thing but would really extend the illusion to new blood for longer and wouldn't drive old salts batty. Its one of my fav games ever and is one of those so bad its charming kind of things for me... But come now Fdev lol.

text is pretty much negligible size-wise, there could be thousands of different phrases added with almost no extra processing power needed to handle them.

sure we'd still see a repeat now and then, but overall it'd seem more alive and believable

FDev could ask the community for submissions. i'm sure we could come up with a few good ones.

I've known Dungeon Masters who will put that much effort into a night of gaming. With all the RP fans who also write fiction not only would they not have to pay for labor but like you said and even do a community event. Even hand out some Arks or unique skins / decals for chosen submissions. Boost the morale of the community and generate good will by bringing everyone together and fixing up the game. But I like the salt mine look also lol.

In this day and age, there should be enough voice talent to actually have proper audio messages for the AI radio chatter.

That said, playing X-Rebirth, the same old responses from traders etc. did get tiresome.

Come to think of it, back in the day even Wing Commander 2 had a voice pack and WC3 had, ahem, Ginger Lynn...
