Matchmaking Pvp?

I voted no because I'd rather FD spend their limited resources on 1) providing a multiplayer mechanism that actually works and 2) multiplayer features that enhance the core gameplay (e.g. drive slaving, mission coop, player faction/alliance support for scanners, instance/group channel comms) rather than yet more modes of play.

I love that PvP exists and is largely unrestricted, and feel that almost any multiplayer game is greatly enhanced by the possibility of players attacking other players at anytime.

I'm not opposed to a matchmaking mode, but I would rarely use it, as I prefer a more organic PvP experience that comes from being attacked or attacking in general, open, play.

An arena in this game run by player effort is kind of the point of this gaming model; it should be a production, not a button selection. Look at the Buckyball races; that's a million times cooler than a SpaceRace separate mode, divorced from the game proper. And the SpaceRace mode wouldn't have those crazy jockeys doing those station superstructure races.

Get a good event going and your particular event becomes THE place to throw down; maybe GalNet will pick it up, or some player-run newsfeed. And as far as bragging rights and distance, who's more badass than the guy who flew 987LY to put his ride and rep on the line? Enhances both his rep and the event. The only way to make that pilot more badass is to put him in Ironman, running arena fights for a living (that will totally not be me >___> ). Leaving your arena in the game world means that it's not just a mashup of respawning guys bashing each other; it's got some weight and consequence to it.

I don't feel that pvp matchmaking or the like fit into Elite's worldview, as it appears in other online games. I'm talking about the pvp where you sign up for a regular team and/or queuing for a random match. Elite is an open world simulator, where pvp may/can/will happen anywhere at any time.

However, I do see a niche for organized pvp. To satiate the need for this, propose there being occasional Federation/Empire sponsored tournaments. "But Cheesehamburgers...that's the same thing!" Not quite, read on.

I see this as an opportunity for a regular scripted event. It could be promoted by in game factions. ::Incoming Transmission:: "Gal Net Announcement! Do you think you're a hot shot? Fastest turrets this side of Azeban? Now's your chance to prove it! Gal Net will be hosting a ship to ship combat tournament on <date>! There's a <credits> amount to be won and bragging rights to be had! Dock at <station> for details and to sign up!" ::End Transmission::

This type of event could be held regularly and take place over a set time frame. Perhaps 1 weekend a month with different time slots? That'd be up to the devs and community.

There's also the messy details of where to have it take place. Teleporting to a battle arena wouldn't make sense. Having the tourney in orbit around a celestial object would, though, how do you stop outside interference? All things to consider.

I know this won't scratch the itch of wanting organized pvp all day every day, however, as stated, that doesn't fit in Elite. If you want pvp right now, go find it! ::Hostile Scan Detected::

:D
