I don't feel that pvp matchmaking or the like fit into Elite's worldview, as it appears in other online games. I'm talking about the pvp where you sign up for a regular team and/or queuing for a random match. Elite is an open world simulator, where pvp may/can/will happen anywhere at any time.
However, I do see a niche for organized pvp. To satiate the need for this, propose there being occasional Federation/Empire sponsored tournaments. "But Cheesehamburgers...that's the same thing!" Not quite, read on.
I see this as an opportunity for a regular scripted event. It could be promoted by in game factions. ::Incoming Transmission:: "Gal Net Announcement! Do you think you're a hot shot? Fastest turrets this side of Azeban? Now's your chance to prove it! Gal Net will be hosting a ship to ship combat tournament on <date>! There's a <credits> amount to be won and bragging rights to be had! Dock at <station> for details and to sign up!" ::End Transmission::
This type of event could be held regularly and take place over a set time frame. Perhaps 1 weekend a month with different time slots? That'd be up to the devs and community.
There's also the messy details of where to have it take place. Teleporting to a battle arena wouldn't make sense. Having the tourney in orbit around a celestial object would, though, how do you stop outside interference? All things to consider.
I know this won't scratch the itch of wanting organized pvp all day every day, however, as stated, that doesn't fit in Elite. If you want pvp right now, go find it! ::Hostile Scan Detected::
