[Competition] The Pioneer’s Cooperative: Placing a Bounty on a Colonizable System

SUBMISSION STAGE OVER: VOTE HERE

Placing a Bounty on a Colonizable System

The Pioneers Cooperative is kicking off with a competition (found after this short intro) that we hope will ignite the imagination of the player base. Even alone, this will be fun, and if we are lucky it may turn into something bigger. At the end of last year a large number of player groups and players came together to push for a community goal to colonize a nebula – this turned into what people now know as the Pleiades CG, and was one of the most popular community goals to date. Due to its success and Frontier saying it would like to do more of these types of events, the groups have reformed into a neutral initiative known as the Pioneer’s Cooperative.

Our aim is to be a positive part of this community and maximize player support for colonization Community Goals, making it worth the developer time needed to create such events until automation of colonization is achieved. In the meantime, we hope to act as a forum for the developers to gather input on these topics, while providing events and competitions along the same theme. This is one of those competitions. Hows this for a player(group) placed bounty?

If you would like to learn more about the Pioneer’s Cooperative and it purpose, check here.

The Competition:
The Pioneer’s Cooperative is placing a bounty on a popular colonization site in the general direction of the core! Systems will be submitted to this thread, and once the competition ends, a vote will take place to determine the community’s top three choices for colonization. The top three will win a free choice of a paintjob, or eBook from the Frontier store. The paintjobs and eBooks are kindly being donated by Frontier. Kit out your long range exploration ships! This is going to be big!

Edit: The top four voted submissions will receive a paintjob or ebook. The Canonn is providing the fourth place prize!

Submission Rules:
To submit your system, make a post of this forum thread. I will go through and gather the top ten to thirty submissions for a community vote depending on how many quality ones we receive. The target range for the system is 2500 to 5000 LY in the general direction of the core. It doesn’t need to be directly at the Core, but in its general direction. Such a destination, should it ever exist would have the benefit of being a rest stop for the most intrepid explorers out there. If you want to find a nebula to be in view of your system, a word of warning, the bigger ones in that direction are a little over 4000 LY out; however, there are some smaller ones that are harder to spot under 4000 LY, you will just have to look closely.

The target content of the system is an Earthlike planet, as well as Pristine Metallic Reserves. At this distance a population would need to be able to sustain itself, thus the Earthlike, and the Pristine Metallic Reserves would provide ample opportunity for growth. If an Earthlike cannot be found with Pristine Metallic Reserves, we will extend the competition a month and settle for pristine metallic reserves in the system next door, or submissions with metal rich reserves. We know Earthlike systems out there exist with Pristine Metallic Reserves. We should settle for only the best, and we will find it! A metallic planet is not an example of Pristine Metallic Reserves; moreover, you can't mine planets right now in game.

Since this is being put up for a vote, if you want to win, consider what people like. Does it have a view of a nebula nearby? Maybe you are lucky enough to find an Earthlike with its own rings that happen to be Pristine Metallic Reserves! Does the system have an interesting layout? Is there a neutron star? A sample submission will be provided below. Please post your submission in the format below. The format will be used in the vote to make it easy to digest for voters.

Submission Rules Summary
  • Has at least one Earthlike
  • Has Pristine Metallic Reserves (Has to literally say Pristine Reserves: Metallic)
  • System submitted must be 2500-5000 LY away from Sol
  • In the general direction of Sagittarius A (In the event of too many submissions, the closest one to the straight line from Sol to Sag A will get priority)
  • It can’t have been previously submitted by someone to the competition
  • It may have been someone else’s “first discovery”, or an old discovery of yours
  • Multiple submissions allowed. Prizes limited to one per contestant.
  • In the format described below

Competition runs for a month, and may be extended to two months if no metallic can be found. If Pristine Mettallic reserves with an earthlike cannot be found, we will extend the competition a month and lower the bar. The administrators taking care of the competition are Tanj Redshirt, Obsidian Ant, Ben Ryder, and Walt Kerman. Entries deemed innappropriate, for whatever reason, are at the discretion of the administrators.

Submission Format:
A submission has four parts after title of your choosing. The first two are necessary and the last two are optional, but I imagine their presence would increase your chance to win. The first part is the “Galactic Location”. Include a picture of the Milky Way with your system selected to show its location. Second part is the “System View Plan”. This is the meat of the submission. Essentially it is a screenshot of the system view, and drawn in are your notes, indicating points of interest, or possible locations of future colonies! Perhaps you want to show in system trade routes (remember this is a place that has to support itself). Whatever you want really, have some fun. The last two are 1 – 2 glamour shots. Please put parts one through four behind a spoiler, or we will have a picture explosion. I want my browser to be able to load the thread! If you are feeling picture happy you may include a link to an imgur gallery under your System Plan photo.

Submission Format Summary
  • Title: The System Name
  • Part 1: Galactic Location: A screenshot of the galaxy with your system selected
  • Part 2: The System Plan: Your notes and plan of future location in system on a screenshot of the system map (Include somewhere in here distance from arrival point to the earthlike, and evidence of metallic)
  • Part 3: Glamour Shot 1
  • Part 4: Glamour Shot 2

Drawing future locations into your system plan is optional. Your notes written into the system plan should include distance from arrival point to the earthlike and whatever other points you think the community would like to know. Remember to place part 1-4 behind a spoiler!

This is a Sample Submission!

Remember, a submission includes the following:

  • Galactic Location
  • The System View Plan
  • 1-2 Glamour Shots

Place all the items behind a spoiler

Since enough metallics have been found, the competition will not be extended a month and will end on the 8th of February at 8am GMT.

A quick disclaimer before everyone gets too excited. This is a player run initiative. While Frontier is supporting us with paintjobs, the winners aren’t necessarily going to have their systems colonized; however, the player run initiative will be submitting a long range story arch and related CG’s to colonize any one of the three winner’s systems. While this is very cool, we don’t actually know where Frontier is on their development cycle. If nothing comes of it, that is ok, and we will be doing more events in the future. Let’s keep this event positive no matter what, and at the very least Frontier can use this for future ideas. See you in space commanders!

Search phase is complete. Please see this post and standby.

Looks like its time for me to pick up a DBX! I'm so stoked for this!

Any tips for a brand new explorer? The furthest I've ever been outside the Faction controlled bubble is 400LY.

Edit:

This is the DBX build I quickly put together. I can afford an ASP, but truth be told I just like the look of the DBX better. Thoughts from experienced explorers? I don't have Horizons, so the shields can go either way. I generally like to have them over not.

Focus on jump range. You can get 34 LY with an asp. Throw off weapons and utilities except for a heatsink or two. Focus on "lightweight" and the best frameshift. This will dramatically reduce the time it takes to travel.... and there is a lot of that.

The other important thing is to have the best scanner and a detailed surface scanner, maybe the system you find also has many terraformable worlds.

The DW expedition will be passing right through the target area during our Waypoint 2 and Waypoint 3 route. This will be a great opportunity for DW Cartographers to enter the competition while we're in that region!

Also, Walt - I tried to send you a PM but your inbox is full. I have passed the Pioneers Cooperative Initiative link on to the Children of Raxxla, so you will hopefully hear from them soon :)

Any thoughts or limitations about how far off the beeline this might/could be? Would you like the Traveller's Rest to be located let's say within 100 ly of the direct line, or would anything within a bubble centered on the direct line at 3750 ly off Sol and 1250 ly in radius be electable?

Good question, somewhere that if you were an explorer coming back from Sag A, you would still make a stop at if a location existed there. I don't want to post a limitation as someone might come up with something good; however, only so many submissions can be put up for a vote, and placement will come into play on which ones we choose to put up for a vote. But then again.... your placement may be off slightly, with an amazing system!

Anything beyond thirty submissions put up for a vote will be difficult to navigate for voters. Even thirty may be an issue. I'll have to see how it looks when the time comes. If we get that many submissions and we have to cut some, know we do it with great pain.

What I may end up doing is let the community sort it out with multiple votes. Say we get thirty good ones. Thirty voted on and then narrow down the top ten. Then have a vote on the top ten for the top three.

You have just given me my first goal as I head out for the Distant Worlds Event!

Actually we launched early FOR the Distant Worlds Event. I've been in touch with Erimus.

Currently 2551 LY from Sol, heading towards the core. (Getting a head start on the Distant Worlds expedition).

You sir, have impeccable timing! Have some rep.

You could always put all the pictures in a "slideshow" video, each with a number to identify them and have a poll done in "brackets" - ie: A vote between picture 1 and 2, a vote between picture 3 and 4 and so on.

PLEASE, please, please make the contenders for the votes anonymous. If you disclose that system xxxxx has been nominated by CMDR yyyyy, then it will become a bit of a beauty contest. Sure, some CMDRs who have an entry in the vote will try to get that known so their buddies will vote for them, but lets try to minimise that.

This is one of the reasons that FD's attempt to get this sort of thing going in the DDF got such a negative reaction.

Sure. When the actual vote comes I wont put the names up. But people will post in their internal groups whose is whose anyway. If this is public enough though, it wont matter as the majority will outvote that type of thing.

I also considered this, and that is why the top three are winners. I'm doing my best to make sure we can have nice things.

Not so experienced here, but I've been going through the sales brochures for the last 10 klyies, and I'm somewhat torn between the view from an Asp and the looks of a DBX. And don't know yet whether I'll be able to afford either.

As for your build: swap the power plant for a 2A. If necessary, switch off the AFMU (or reduce its priority). Check if can do with a 3D distributor. This would be my current idea for a loadout. Neither AFMU nor heatsinks yet - if the DBX is as good at scooping as my current DBS, I don't think I'd need either. And that still leaves me with an empty compartment for the SRV (if/when I get Horizons).

Bah, Metallic reserves knocks both of my offering out of the running. Got a system with 2 earthlikes, 2 water worlds (one terraformable) and 2 terraformable HMC planets....but no belts. As well as another with 3 terraformable HMC, one earth-like, and one water world but no belt :C

*cough posting one anyways*

If that's not easily settleable then I don't know what is.

Presumably some decent systems will eventually appear. Despite the intro saying old discoveries would do, that is only so if you have the glamour shots! Which I don't. Still, if I ever get to leave on distant worlds, perhaps I can go through just to get those shots. I do at least have a metallic ring.

Its binary is 'only' a water world, unfortunately.

My other two E-L's within that band fail - one with no asteroid belt, and the other with asteroids, but only around a different star to the E-L, and the best is only metal rich.

Perhaps you could try to negotiate with FD for a prize being naming rights to something - the spaceport, perhaps. I know some folks paid good money to name planets, so I would not want to push that.

I would take naming rights over a paint job in a heartbeat.

This is an awesome idea! Unfortunately I'm 9000ly out in the NGC 6357 Nebula surveying for the DWE so I'm too far out. Gonna keep an eye on this though!
