Computer needs replacing.

I think I only mentioned to my daughter and son that there were only two slots on the motherboard. She's going to have a look when she gets back from Scotland, and I'm not going to argue with that.

I did switch the existing card for one of the new ones, but I don't know if I can put both in. Waiting on daughter again. Should be possible, shouldn't it..?
Yeah of course, clip them both in.

Not only possible but strongly recommended.

If your computer only had one memory module installed prior to you buying the new memory kit, then it was being hamstrung the whole time you've owned it until now.

Memory should always be installed in matching pairs for performance purposes. The computer's processor has two memory channels, so running with two 8GB modules installed not only means twice the total capacity of just the one 8GB module, but it doubles how quickly the memory can communicate with the CPU as well.

So that should provide a bit of an additional performance boost on top of whatever new graphics card you end up getting to replace the GTX 1050.

Did anybody mention the power supply, yet?

When installing the second 8 GB RAM module, verify that your power supply has got a cable with an 8-Pin (or 6+2) PCIe connector.
The existing GTX 1050 graphics card probably does not need such a cable, but the cable would be required for any reasonable upgrade.
Also try to find a type plate on the power supply, with brand name, power rating and model.
