Newcomer / Intro Conflict Zone Mission - Too difficult even at mostly harmless?

Hey there. I applied a mission with my Viper MKIV, in which I have to kill 8 NPC. Mission rewards are about 200.000 Credits. And recommend mission "rank" is mostly harmless. I thought it would be a an easy mission and flew to the next conflict zone (high) and attacked the first enemy I met. They nearly oneshot me within 2 seconds.
Is this a bug or did Frontier change the conflict zone balance? Any hints?

High Conflict Zones are the highest & hardest level of combat. I think I tried them once when I started but then realised they were too hard so didn't go back to one for a few months until I was in a heavily armed Federal Assault Ship and even then I struggled at times.

Before going to a conflict zone it is a good idea to build up your combat skills in other zones first where you should find enemy NPCs. In order of difficulty:
  1. Nav Beacon
  2. Low-RES
  3. RES (Standard)
  4. High-RES
  5. Compromised Nav Beacon
  6. HazRES
  7. Low CZ
  8. High CZ

The different types of RES and how to find them: http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Resource_Extraction_Site

The 1.7/2.2 patch introduces CQC installations where there can be wanted NPCs but have not come across one yet.

Not flown the Viper Mk IV but I read it's less agile than the Viper (Mk III) so requires a lot of Flight Assist off manouvering and good thrust control.
But the Mk III is a good bounty hunting (& combat training) ship to take to any areas up to a High-RES as you have the support of the local security ships.

EDIT: Also be wary of the combat rank the NPC has before engaging.

Tbh, I can't tell the difference between 7 & 8!

The difficulty of the opponents is the same in both CZ. High intensity one simply means more ships.
I thought the high CZs tended to have NPCs of a higher combat rank (although I've never checked in detail).

I guess that is partly true as the high CZs tend to have more ships so more chance that the NPCs divert their firepower to another ship. And if a capital ship drops in there are more distractions.

Four years later and these missions are still utterly ed. Trying a mission ranked 'mostly harmless' and the lowest ranked mission target is 'expert' who will two-shot you with disruptive attacks.

Frontier, ... this makes me want to flip my table.
