Confounded by Marlinist Food Delivery Event

I am a new-ish Pilot with a lightly engineered Keelback and 135M credits in the bank. I see the Marlinists need food so I load out cargo bays for up to 80t. I have attempted 9 deliveries from Vasak to HIP22550 and been destroyed twice by greefers that say nothing at all. I have been able to best one NPC pirate and avoid numerous others but I can't compete or avoid skilled players with PVP ships like the FDL or Python.

So far, the I have delivered 860tons at the cost of my time and two ship rebuys. The community has delivered 21,700,000 tons and will certainly deliver over 100M tons before the event closes. I am at much less than one percent of the total tonage delivered at significant cost to myself. I could continue in Solo mode to avoid the player greefers, but the paltry amount I am able to deliver is never going to get me to the 75% on contributors tier.

I ask the community for advice. I have only just picked up this game and am not ready or equipped for hard nosed PvP.

So switch to solo 🤷‍♂️

Not sure how the 75% figures, as you would struggle to compete in Solo or Open in a small ship.

Edit: Top 75% is < 800T at the moment, so 10 runs in Solo, or 50+ runs in Open at your current rate. Your choice

Welcome!

Two tips for you:

1. Check here https://inara.cz/galaxy-communitygoals/ for an estimate on how much effort it takes to get into a specific range. About 800 tons will get you into top 75% (do keep in mind this will go up a bit as we near the end). With 80 tons per trip I do think you can catch up and make it!

2. There is no shame playing in solo mode or looking for the private groups that ban non-consensual PvP like Mobius. Elite was developed this way - all game modes are equal and you are free to play it the way you want, despite what anyone will try to tell you. Especially as a new player, you have no chance at all to have a ship that is well-equipped to account for gankers.

Switch to solo (or join a private group with some friends), your ship is no match for them gankers (unless you enjoy being a 3 legged hare in a meadow full of wolves)
Also, if you want to compete in a trading CG, you need to adjust your ship to be optimal at trading/hauling

This Krait Mk2 build has more than 200t cargo space. And costs less than 60 millions
But you should not go into combat with it., just win any NPC pirate interdiction and focus on deliveries.

Then you could alter that build for combat (however it will be more expensive) and join the combat CG (which unfortunately it will end very soon) - also on solo
With the above build you can go in a High res and help the Cops deal with wanted targets. It is advisable to actually help the police and not tackle them all by yourself :)

Keeping it simple, you'll want a bigger ship. A nice cheap option is a type-7 for around 17million (cheaper if you buy it in a LYR system). Around 300t of cargo per run and you'll be looking back at the top 75%. And play in solo/pg when doing cg cargo runs. Griefers are thick as flies on a carcass during those. You could also ask in the chat if there are any fleet carriers parked near to the cg station that are unloading cg goods. A nice quick 2-5 second supercruise jaunt can send your ranking soaring.

Kudos for doing the CG in open! It's true they're the worst for ganking probably. If you're committed to staying in open this or next time (it's much more "alive"), I'd be happy to outride for you if I'm on, and/or can help you with rebuys (Krait II - ouch!) in that case also. Don't just listen to the "have to go to solo/PG" guys; it's a choice. Some basic supercruise evasion technique will help you too.

Alternatively, picking your time also makes a great difference, if you can be flexible. Basically in-game daytime, when US are asleep and EU are at work or getting vitamin D, should be quieter, but it being a CG, still busy with people hauling.

And I second the carrier idea - these are common now at CGs, stock up elsewhere and unpack by the station - makes open a lot safer.

Been looking over the Krait Mk2 for a long time now. Perhaps it is time to invest in an upgrade. Thank you for the replies. Those are very constructive suggestions..
Yeh, T-7 is excellent, very easy to beat interdictions.
However, the Krait will be good at this and lots of other things, it's a great all rounder.

I'm not excusing the griefers or their actions at all - but I personally enjoy the added thrill of flying in Open. I've done trade CG's and ended up in the top 25%, in Open, with a variety of trade-themed ships. There are steps you can take to raise your situational awareness, as well as get away from griefers even after they've interdicted you. Check out this video made by Rinzler for some very good tips:

You should not call them griefers if they dont actually grief you. For you they seem to be entertainers 😄
You know, just saying 😇

Dont go in a straight line from star to target station. Go Up or Down first, make a big loop. This way it is harder for you to be detected. Also see how much heat you are outputting; making you less or more visible then other CMDRs. You can see your heat signature above the fuel guage.

With just 135 million in the bank, you may find yourself uncomfortable with the idea of spending it down by purchasing a Krait. There's no question that it is one of the best multi-purpose ships in the game, along with the Python. As suggested here, the Type-7 is cheap, cheap, cheap. NOTE that It requires a large pad. It can haul a nice amount of cargo. It starts at just over 17 million cr. A bare-bones, all-cargo config doesn't add significantly to the cost.

For CGs such as this, I also really prefer to play in OPEN, so I use my T-7 because the rebuy is really low. If it's clear that there's too much ganking going on at the CG delivery point, you can switch to SOLO before your jump into the destination system to eliminate the problem then switch back to OPEN before you leave the delivery point. That's just one strategy.

Another one: Upon leaving the station (in OPEN), you can enter supercruise to see how much worrisome traffic there is in the system. This helps you determine how risky a return in OPEN might be. This can be done at all-but-zero risk to yourself because you'll have your jump locked in so you'll be prepped to high-wake at a moment's notice.

This is all about your feelings on numerous things such as how much you like to have in the bank, what ships you want (and when you want to buy them), playing in this mode vs that mode, etc. The advice given previously about choosing your mode for your benefit is spot-on. I second the motion of not letting others tell you how to play.

Welcome and have fun out there!

I flew to a station that had a discount and purchased the Krait, MkII and enough cargo racks to haul 160t. With some modest effort, I made the 75% contributor target and have made back the entire cost of the ship and modest upgrades. I now have a trading ship that I can pimp out while I grind through the Entrepreneur trading rank and do some exploring. I am going to outfit the Keelback to be a dedicated mining ship. These suggestions are very much appreciated. Safe journeys ~ Rock
