Guide / Tutorial Confused on HOTAS Setting Up

I'm really confused on how the X-55 HOTAS (or any HOTAS) bindings are configured.

The main problem I have is that I want to create my bindings in the Saitek X-55 software using the Programming buttons for throttle and joystick etc but that saves the configuration as a .pro file. How do I make that a bindings file so ED recognises that?

The reason I want to do it in the Saitek software is because as far as I can tell, ED doesnt recognise the 3 mode settings.

I'm not an expert, but you will still have to manually bind the buttons in Elite. Switching to another mode simply makes the button "a different button" from the game's perspective, so you can bind it to something else

The profile and ED bindings are completely separate. The modes will only work if you program them to issue an ED binding. E.g. you can have the trigger issue the keystroke "A" in mode one and the keystroke "B" in mode two, but then you still need the keystrokes A and B bound to something for ED.

cheers guys. a bit annoying its not more 'intuitive' than that.
It's completely intuitive if you skip the Saitek software 😁.
Go into ED's options - bindings menu, select1 what you want to do, then press the button (or whatever) you want to do it with. Can't get any easier than that.

Alternatively, you can edit the bindings file manually. It's only XML, after all.

1Ok, I admit, that can be a bit of a problem if you haven't bound all of the menu navigation keys first...

I've been using .pr0 files !! Been using an x-55 too, and although these keybindings I've founfd here (5 or 6) all have some good and bad points! so I too also want to set it up from scratch.. I found this -Aussiedroid_Elite_Dangerous_2.2.pr0 and the file tells you how to get this working in elite - so be easy to set your own up using the same way..
Here's what I found in old thread and answered to somone else looking x-55 profile probs

This is the exact same position I find myself in X55 and not play Elite since it basically came out.. I'm too in need of a good profile - as find the built in one not all that.. Hope this thread gets me back to enjoying the game as it should.. ps not read all thread yet so hoping it does ;)

edit - I DID come across an old thread in another site linking to the elite forum, Aussiedroid's X-55 Rhino: Complete Profile Setup

Using Sandcracka's bindings, which have been a huge help, I'm not sure how to reverse thrusters. Can anybody offer a suggestion? Thanks I followed the instructions earlier in this thread, to make the little slider on the throttle, control fwd/ref thrust. For some reason, the button in the...

I use the Logitech X56 and don't use the software's programming, also because (at least this) external software is not aware of states within the game.

What works quite well is to use the game's alternates wherever available, depending on mode.

To give a simple example: On my bottom right hat on the Stick I have added FSS zoom to the default binds:
in UI - navigation: left / up / right / down
in Flight - Pips: SYS / ENG / WEP / reset
in FSS - Zoom: zoom out / step zoom in / zoom in / step zoom out

And to stick with the FSS topic, the button on the top wheel on my throttle switches turret mode in flight and turns FSS on and off in super cruise, the wheel tunes the FSS frequency in FSS and is a secondary, reversible throttle in flight (the latter can be confusing and I tend to fly backwards after scanning for HGEs).

Check out EDRefCard, it's a life saver - Reference card for controller bindings:
EDRefCard https://edrefcard.info/

Where your bindings are usually located (you can paste this directly in the address bar of a file dialog popup or a Windows Explorer widow):
%localappdata%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

PS: Only copy bindings into a different Folder or a sub folder and don't leave them in the original folder, unless you rename them in the file!
PS2: Bind a key to 75% Throttle.
