Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn Last Night.

elite says the date is whatever, but the layout of the galaxy is as it was at the time the data was collected. They didn't simulate a future position due to date.

The orbit of the planets would justifiably be assumed to also be set to current day, so there's a chance. But there's an even greater chance that nobody paid that much attention to the starting position of the planets in the solar system and just based them on whatever observational data they started with at the time the galaxy was reset in gamma.

In Elite, the orbital mechanics work, if you watch a video of Mitterland Hollow, you can see this almost "happening in real-time". However, I'm not sure the data for Sol system had all the planets correctly aligned for their relative positions at a given point in time, or just their relative distances from the sun and orbital period + rotational speeds plugged in. There is also the fact that 3300 was not a good number to start the Elite calendar year from way back in 2014, as it puts the elite calendar completely out of whack with the real world calendar for leap years, which could screw up orbital calculations when trying to stage such an event as this conjunction.

Sadly, without having the effective date of observed / positional data for the planets starting positions when the "stellar forge's big bang", and with the hinkey date correlation / leap year mismatch, I am unconvinced that we could ever work out when we'd get such alignments in game. On the other hand, that is not to say we cannot see such things in game, it just means that we might need to chase the shots, like literally pursue them. How could we do that? Supercruise. Are you telling me that I'm the only person to have staged his own eclipses / conjunctions by supercruising to a position in space where the planets do align?

You still wouldn't be able to "see that" in-game, in the sense of seeing the two planets as planets with surface features and rings like you can in those astrophotos, as it would require a telescope with more power than the 4x mag the external camera zoom can manage. All you'd see in ED is the two dots, close together, with their clusters of mini-dot moons.

In care most of you missed it:

Now, I wonder if in Elite's version of Sol, If the solar system is accurate enough to see this in the game?

Oh, Seven....

Took my telescope out for the first time in 10 years to see it.. took my spouse and 2 sons as well... was very cool.

I happen to be in Sol at the moment - I'll go and have a look....

Edit: In ED they're in roughly the same area of the sky, but not very close, maybe 60 deg apart.
I saw them on Monday irl, interesting but not spectacular. Hoping to get a better picture tomorrow.

It's still possible to see them very close together. It's pretty neat, so don't feel bad because you didn't (or couldn't*) see it on THE night.

* it takes along time to clean that bat you-know-what!

Edit: I must say, that photo from Guatemala is pretty damm spectacular!
