Connection issues

Hi,

What could be the reason for ED Launcher refusing to connect (login page with no response from server) when I move a laptop from Ethernet to a phone hotspot connection (which works, all other apps connect with no issues)?

Thanks.

The game is currently in the process of upgrading to the Ascendancy update and will be unavailable for some hours yet.

Yes, I am aware of that. Please read my question again.

To clarify: on Ethernet I get the expected "Server status: maintenance" page (with the State of the Galaxy pages below). On a hotspot, the launcher doesn't get there and refuses to login at all.

It's an update, not just maintenance, therefore various backend systems will be down and or going through changes as a result. For updates such as this, it is common for Frontier to disable access to some systems, that may result in intermittent access.

Which also means connectivity may vary depending on which path you are connecting from and which CDNs might be in use.

The update is scheduled for several hours, so we can expect intermittent connectivity to various game related services over that window.

I understand. I'm asking because I tried connecting this morning via Ethernet, and got the expected "Server maintenance" page. Several hours later, on a hotspot, I couldn't log in at all. Checked again 10 minutes ago, back on Ethernet, and got the "Server maintenance" page. If I understand you correctly, this can be a complete coincidence and unrelated to the connection type.

All of the servers are down for the big update and won't be back up until at least 15:00 UTC (in game time).

Therefore you will not be able to connect to them during this time. That means the game servers, the login servers, and the store.

It seems only the title of my post is actually being read.

I am asking about the reason for different results on hotspot vs Ethernet, in order to understand if there could be issues with off-Ethernet connection. That's all. I know Ascendancy is out today. Also, it's Thursday.

Do you normally play using the hotspot?

Sorry, I think we all misunderstood :)

Tha launcher should work the same whether you're on Ethernet or WiFi unless there's a firewall setting blocking the connection or the WiFi hotspot is restricting the type of traffic - maybe web traffic (https, http) only.

Thank you, finally... :) No, only tried it once a long time ago, but with another machine. So I'm wondering what could be causing the ED Launcher to fail while all other internet access works.
Then I wouldn't worry about it too much. Wait until the update is done and the servers are stable again an retest the hotspot then. And if there's a difference, investigate it then.

Though I do realize you may be to busy playing by that time...

It's not a WiFi hotspot but my personal iPhone hotspot. I didn't think it could restrict traffic types, thank you, I'll troubleshoot in that direction.
That is a WiFi hotspot :D
So wired connection works (as in you connect and see the maintenance msg), hotspot doesn't...that in itself indicates it's the WiFi hotspot, what exactly though is hard to trouble shoot with very little info.
