Considering getting Elite Dangerous

Frontier recently: "There are not currently plans for PS5 and XBox Series X. We're continuing to evaluate. "

Paradox.

I suspect the game will be backwards compatible with those consoles, but there won't be a specific version for them. It would be madness otherwise.

Yes, we're all a little in the dark about this over on the Playstation sub, specifically because the backwards compatibility is by no means assured on PS5 and no further comment from FDev has been forthcoming.

It's a strange one alright.

I‘m on PC and love the game, despite the many niggles and almost traditional grievances.

For me the biggest issue I faced with being on PC and falling for the game is the hugely expensive road it can lead you on if you‘re so inclined. I very quickly went from k/b & mouse to a very old Sidewinder Pro joystick, onto an T Flight X-HOTAS, followed by a used X-55, then a new X-56 and I’ve just received my new (and costly) Virpil Alpha. That’s just flight controllers. Add to that the various upgrades to my PC to enable VR, then the VR headset....followed by a preorder on the new Reverb G2.

None of these are necessary obviously but it does highlight the hole into which you can descend (or heights you may ascend if you prefer) when opting for the sheer versatility of the PC. A console is probably the cheaper option if you’re as weak willed don’t want to run the risk of throwing more and more cash at a game:)

As to the game itself, whether you go PC or console, grab it when it’s on one of its regular sales and it will either be the game you paid least for and played most or just a few hours of fun poking about for not a lot of money. However, in my opinion, the two hour return period on Steam simply isn’t enough to give this game a fair crack. It’s way too expansive and has a steep learning curve which two hours can never really begin to cover.

Hope you enjoy it if you go for it.

They probably don't even know themselves, until their get their hands on a PS5 dev kit.

Not sure that's the issue. (see:

, Planet Coaster releasing on PS5)

Anyway, for the OP: The past of the game on console has been that of a 3 headed cousin to the PC game, and the future of the game on console is a little uncertain. If you have the option, your best bet is PC. Enjoy!

Well, I have no idea then. Perhaps it's something to do with Odyssey?

Thank you for all the replies. I think I will get it on Steam this weekend, and if it looks bad, and/or KB and M is too smiles much of a pain, I can return it (as long as it's been under two hrs) and try it on console.
Smiles knowingly...

Do realise that ED has a LOT OF BINDINGS!

You'll be spending way more than 2 hours setting them up! Expect a learning curve for the first few weeks too,,.

Personally, PC (doesn't need an amazing spec but obviously more is better) and a hotas that will set you back £100+

I never touched a single one, and I'm using a controller too. 😁

Well I don't know how that works for you then... I'm on PC and it needs your input as many of the configuration options are not set other than the really basic flight options. I'm not sure you can even complete the training sections without going into bindings?

At least that is how it works for me... You may get different milage depending on your needs.

A last thought on this for the OP...

I'm presuming that you have played this genre of game before? It's a very open ended sandbox! So it's very driven by what you put into it. If you like making your own fun, you'll love it! If you are expecting more of a 'movie experience' where the game provides the entertainment, it might not be for you.

I've played most of the Elite titles so I pretty much knew what I was getting when I bought the game years ago now. I have two PC accounts [one for the 'bubble' and one for deep space exploration, much less important now though as the game is in a quiet phase until Odyssey comes out next year. No community goals etc]. I say that because it shows the level that you can get hooked into this game. I've logged literally thousands of hours in this game! It's very addictive to a certain type of person! It's also exasperatingly annoying with some of its issues...

Bottom line though, if you get into this game. It will swollow you whole! Hook, line and sinker! It has a steep learning curve, but FDevs recent updates have cushioned this with improvements to much of the starter experience, including starter systems in the bubble that let you learn the basics in a fairly safe environment.

Should you decide to give the game a go, I'd be happy to help you find your feet 😎 [my Cmdr names are 'Susanna Saunders' and 3VE]. PM me to chat more! I hope you decide to give this community a go!

Fly safe o7 (that's a salute 🙂)

Nope.

See the link in that post. Get Horizons for a fiver, see the 'related content' link at the bottom of the page to also get the base game (which is nedeed) for a fiver. Then buy whatever paints you might fancy with the £30 you'll have saved by not spending £40 on the Cmdr deluxe edition. Especially relevant since the paints you get with the deluxe edition are for entry level ships if I recall correctly, which you might well find you don't fly after a couple of weeks.

Oh and keyboard and mouse is fine to get a feel for the game and see whether you'd want to invest in a stick, full HOTAS or whatever. I've been playing with KB&M for five years.

I did say buy it when it's on sale. I've bought the Cmdr Deluxe Edition direct from Frontier for £21.19 in one of their sales.

That said, using your method you get it for £10 and still have £11 for ARX.

The only thing I would say is that I've read enough posts from people struggling with buying ED and Horizons separately and trying to get it to work. At least with the Deluxe Edition the two are tied together.

I can't comment on what it's like now but I bought Elite and Horizons separately and had no issues at all. That was before Steam was involved as well though.

If its your first venture into Elite then you really need to get the BBC Micro version from 1984 and start there. This will give you superiority and utter respect on the forums especially if you use it to batter newer players :)

Seriously, looks like youre decided on PC so need to advise, Im on XB. More 'happenings' on PC for sure, more players, but the Console community in general seems to be more friendly in game and have a lot more fun. Less gankers per player ratio probably, most of them go to PC.

Better / quicker loading on PC for sure - GalMap loading time is the most obvious one Ive seen. Seems to be less instancing issues on Console though, may be just anecdotal and sometimes for a few hours multicrew is just inaccessible but then mostly it works fine most of the time. May be down to individual rigs on PC casuing more issue there, or more bandwidth or just more players on server, could be many things.

Most folks give up horizontal thrust
Point is, on XB i'm rather crap with fixed weapons

You can set a 'deadzone' for either stick, meaning you can have 1 control in the deadzone and another in the non-deadzone.

LS - Deadzone for pitch & yaw (left, right, up and down), out of deadzone for roll. Deadzone is moveable so you can set it for your own dexterity.
RS - Thrust only, horizontal & vertical
Right Hand Side Firing Group - Fixed Weapons

Or swop it over if left handed or prefer it.

This means that when trying to get it fixed on your target exactly your right hand is not touching the 'movement' controls at all. This was a breakthrough for me for fixed weapons, using the same hand meant I was constantly wobbling when firing as trying to track at the same time or pulling up too much just at point of firing.

I'm on PC too, and I've never really had an issue with leaving the bindings the way they are as default. As for training, I started playing the game before those were even a thing, so I've never even looked at them once. 😄

Paradox.

What paradox? Game will be playable on both consoles.
If they will patch it to take advantage of the new consoles, it remains to be seen.

Still, even the fact that new consoles will come with fast M2 storage, will be a nice bonus for the players - true 4k and quality mode (assuming they will eventually fix it) will be another bonus

So, exactly what the title says. I'm thinking about getting this game. As you can see from my profile picture, I've I'm already a player of a Frontier-made game, and don't worry, I know Elite a VERY different genre than Planet Zoo, and management games in general. Still, it's a genre I'm a bit interested in. Just a few questions.

First of all, what platform should I play it with? I have a PC that's pretty bad for gaming. I do have GeoForce Now, meaning graphics aren't going to be too terrible, it's mostly general performance that I'm concerned about. If I need a good computer for playing on PC to be viable, I also could get it on Xbox instead, although I'd rather not if possible, due to personal preference, and the fact that console is always a bit neglected in the world of gaming.

Second, controls. As far as I'm aware, most people either play with a controller or flight stick. I like keyboard and mouse, but should I take the controller route? I've only seen one person claiming keyboard and mouse is easy, everyone else seems to think it's a pain.

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions, and have a nice day.
Hello. I've been playing the game on xbox for 3 years now so I'll give my assessment. The xbox version can do everything the pc can however the pc can use third party apps to supplement your experience. Like you can set up macros for your pip management to immediately move to a particular configuration while xbox has to manually move it the way we want.

Also on pc you can choose what flight stuck you want to use. You can't on xbox. The xbox does have 1 flight stick you can use but it's complete garbage. There's an entire thread in the xbox section devoted to talking about how garbage the flight stick is.

On the flip side I prefer using the xbox elite controller. Version 2 just came out and it can bind a shift key that can be used as a modifier. Elite is the only game I've ever played that lets you customize almost 100% of the control layout. So don't buy into the oh but there's not enough buttons to play elite crap. You can get everything you need out of a controller with some creative keybinding.
