Considering starting over: Need some questions answered.

I have the Lifetime Expansion Pass and am eagerly awaiting Odyssey like most of us, but I've been away from Elite Dangerous for over a year. Partly because I reached a comfortable point of achievement. While I'm not triple Elite, I'm close, and my Krait is kitted out and engineered to the gills. It got to the point where my only reason for playing was exploration, which is fine, but I miss those early days of building things up and achieving things.

But with Odyssey, I see an opportunity to start over, create a new personal story (one that doesn't even start with me owning a ship!) and working my way back up.

So I'm considering starting over, wiping my save, but I need to know a few things first:

1) What stays with you regardless of starting over? I assume stuff like your ship kits, paint jobs, decals, etc... are all going to carry over.
2) Does your saved Holo-Me profiles carry over? If not, is there a way to save them and import them back (took me a long time to make mine)
3) Do achievements like First Discovered by on the system map remain intact or are they wiped?

Anything else I should know?
I can answer this Mossfoot.
1. Yes, anything bought on the store stays with you. Pretty much everything else is wiped.
2. No, your HoloMe is also wiped, as are your keybinds. There is no way to get the HoloMe back, I'd suggest taking screenshots while in the HoloMe editor so you can redo your settings. Your keybinds you can back up (I am sure you knew this).
3. Here's how Ed Lewis explained it to me when I asked this question: (I'm going to paraphrase here as I can't remember what Ed said to me word for word) "While your new Commander Alien is the same name, it is a new Commander Alien. It is a new version of your Commander name, so the first discovered is still your Commander name, but a new version of it" So for example, if I got a first discovered with Alien #1, and I reset my save, the first discovered is still for Alien #1 even though I am on Alien #2.

I too am planning on restarting once Odyssey is released, but as I have all the permits, I am going to do a soft reset, so I am going to wipe all my money and all my ships, but not clear my save.

I don't think you lose your keybinds when resetting - done this a few times on my alt and never had that issue - although keybinds are shared across all installed game copies and I have a custom save for this so maybe that's why.

As for a second account not costing much, while that's true for the base game if you want to play Odyssey that's another 40 bucks on top of that, so not a minor expense.

I'm buying Odyssey for my main account but will not do so for the second, until it's massively reduced at least (more likely I will play the alt account a lot less often after Odyssey goes live).

I'm tempted to begin again in Odyssey. I like the idea of starting without a ship and spending some time making my way around the gameworld 'on foot' and using the Apex system. But I'm loathed to go through the engineer grind again.

If there was an option to strip my account of all its wealth and assets, and reputation with the various factions, but keep my status with the engineers so I don't have to run that particular hamster wheel again, I would. In fact, if it wasn't for the engineer grind, I would have bought a second account a long time ago and done just that. But there's no way I'm going through that again.

@Alien Out of curiosity, what is your logic behind restarting (soft reset) for Odyssey?
I want to try building up to where I am now and beyond starting from almost nothing, not even a ship. If the game allows a non-ship start for new commanders, it's the closest I will get without clearing my save. I like the idea that starting on foot without a ship has one side of the game to it, and then when you earn enough and buy your first ship (assuming a non-ship new start), the game takes on a whole other side to it.

As for why I don't want to clear my save, I spent a long time getting all the permits and repping up with the Feds & Imps, I don't want to have to go through all that again.

I must be the only person who actually likes the grind lol.
I intend doing a full game wipe and starting from scratch. I don't mind having to start over again with the engineers and gaining permits.
It will be fun to have to work my way back up with nothing but the clothes I'm wearing and 1000cr's.

As I will be keeping my same commander name, all the discoveries that I have made will still be there.

Can i have your stuff?
You know what, if you could transfer modules, cash, ships, etc... to other players, then I would have a massive yard sale..... but without the actual selling part.
A yard giveaway.

Actually even though I don't play in open, it would be cool, just for once, to do so then I could tell people where I am, they could come to me, then I'd jettison all my LTD's for others to scoop up.
I'd even let the gankers blow me up afterwards. It will save me having to self destruct.

Ah ok, I really like that notion! It makes Odyssey like a prequel to your existing ED experience.

I'm seeing it like Euro Truck Simulator 2 or American Truck Simulator. You start that game not even owning a truck. You do jobs for employers using their trucks and earn enough to buy your own truck, that's when the game takes on a slightly different side to it, and you keep earning money, buy more trucks and recruit other drivers, and the game takes on yet another side to it.

I'm not sure if anyone in the community sees Odyssey this way, like I do.

I never thought of it like that. 👍
How many of us would love to go back in time and live our lives again knowing what mistakes to avoid. Like having a second chance at a better life.

Unfortunately i can't do that for my real life, but I sure as hell can do it for my virtual one.

3. ........ Commander name, ......

1 - I covered that comprehensively above (post #4) - there is a lot of stuff that carries over, not "Pretty much everything else is wiped" - In truth the only(?) cosmetics lost are the rank progress decals.

2. You absolutely do not lose your keybinds. All your options remain as they were, bindings included.

3. A commander name is locked - you can re-use your commander name but you cannot create a commander with a name that has already been used by someone else (even one of your own alternate accounts). So, as I said earlier, all your "tags" remain as they were when you created them. So for example there are bodies tagged with Para Handy that were from different clear-saves - it is still me, just different incarnations.

Wow, passive-aggressive ... but ok ....
as for 3. You're basically agreeing with me, but also, I got an answer direct from Ed Lewis, where does your answer come from?

Just correcting erroneous information, somone wants to know the position before deciding to clear save so I wanted them to have the correct information.

3 was not a correction but an expansion, fully explaining the position regarding commander names. My information comes from a series of correspondence years ago with support regarding my Para Handy commander name - I wanted to transfer that name to my LEP commander name (which uses my default "tag" I use in games etc). They were adamant that a commander name, once used in the game is irretrievably tied to the account that created it.

Everything you have bought stays with you and first discovered are always there and don't disappear.

I'm thinking of sound the same, but I may use my epic account instead.

key bindings remain - I had to reset them to default by hand, when I deleted my save.

I will admit, it's been a while since I wiped my save, and I am not going to wipe my main save again. However, I do know, without question, Elite Dangerous loves to wipe my keybinds. If I plug a joystick in, it wipes my keybinds, if I unplug it, it wipes them. There have been times it wipes my keybinds "because reasons" even if I've done nothing.
Does clearing your save wipe your keybinds?, I can't remember, so I am going to defer to your assertion.

As for "pretty much everything else", the only thing I can say for certain that does get wiped is your HoloMe. The only things I can say for certain don't get wiped are your store purchases.

As for your first discovereds, I don't know exactly how the game handles it, but as I said, Ed Lewis told me the game differentiates between different version of your saves even if you use the same commander name. What I didn't say in my above post, because Ed didn't say but it was implied, is that the game records it's YOUR first discovered on an account level, but doesn't show that ... again, I don't know if the game does that, I am reading between the lines of what Ed Lewis told me.

Para Handy, I agree with everything you said, there is not one thing I disagree with you on, maybe I word it differently to you, maybe I have experienced it differently to you, maybe I am even remembering it differently to how it actually is, but as it stands, I agree with you.

Well I was not falling out with you, just clarifying from my experiences.

I have NEVER lost my binds since I started to rename them. Not on major updates, patches or controller unplugged (or failed MFD to be precise). The worst, on failed MFD (so equating to unplugged device), was binding loading error so it loaded a default - corrected the error and my bindings once again loaded as before. This is because on it loading a default set then any changes are saved to "custom" and so overwrites your binds if you were still using "custom".

I don't know why F D have made controls setting, saving, etc so obtuse but in my opinion everyone on PC should do renaming as per this:
