"Console development continues behind the scenes with an Autumn release still on schedule"

I hope I'm wrong, but I reckon that we won't be seeing Odyssey on last gen consoles.

I believe that David Braben's post about ditching console development for now (to concentrate on pc) and not giving us any sort of new console release date, is his way of softening the blow for when he (maybe sometime next year) makes another post telling us that either console release is scrapped completely, or they are now only doing it for new gen consoles.

Sadly the console situation is becoming ever more aligned with the macOS experience. Whether by design or accident, Frontier have allowed a situation where console users are incentivised to get a gaming PC if they want to play Odyssey in the near future.
I already have a gaming PC. I'm using it right now... for work. The only game I have on it is Star Citizen (and I rarely touch that).

All my other gaming is done on Playstation, including Elite Dangerous which I've been playing on PS4 since its launch. I've put 2,500+ hours into ED building up a CMDR and a fleet and I'm not going to be switching to PC to play it. Certainly not with FDev's current policy of only transferring credits when migrating accounts to different platforms.

2 and a half months after full release and they still can't get it to work on PC even with throwing the full team behind it. Honestly be glad it's not coming to console because it is nowhere even near ready. It's still in Alpha over there in PC land no matter what they say.

it was the bit when David posted
'...but the dates and details of the console platforms are going to change...' that seemed to suggest that last gen consoles were not going to get Odyssey

I think Frontier will delay the console development until there will be not enough players to make it feasible in the first place, and then they'll just say sorry, it's not feasible anymore, we'll stay on PC. Honestly, it just sounds totally outlandish that something that was previously in development for consoles is now suddenly cancelled, with the promise of being developed again some time in the future. I mean come on. I simply cannot believe such a statement.

They have some very serious problems getting the code to work. It doesn't bode well for the future but if they can get it to run on PCs the X series should be fine

At a push, I'll buy a Series X to play Elite on but I'm not moving to PC.
A, cross-saves aren't supported and
B, I just don't want one.
Also C I use Linux
I too don't want a gaming pc just to play Odyssey. I prefer the laptop that I have.

I am not actually a big gamer. I have a few games, but I only really play ED on PS4. At the time, I had some spare cash to buy a new PS4 and ED. I have always loved the Elite franchise and have played on and off since 1986.

As much as I love the game, there is no way that I'd buy a PS5 just to play Odyssey, unless there was going to be a shed load of new content that comes with it, which I can't see happening.

So unless Frontier keeps the Horizon servers open for us console users, so that we can still play (which they probably won't once Odyssey has merged with Horizons) then my Elite experience will end and I'll just go back to NMS, which at least is still being developed for PS4, has free updates, total cross play, etc...

I'm see a glimmer of hope for Odyssey.

I fly both XBSX (finally found one) and PC. Odyssey on my ASUS ROG G752VY plays well now (Philips 43 4k monitor) so, I'm hoping the schedule for console will be re-instated.

Not a fan of ground combat yet, but only because this game has so much to do I cannot get to all of it yet - still have to do serious exploration (EDO looks really good for that), Thargoid hunting and serious PVP. Retired so I can play everyday as much as I want, so space sim fun is my primary objective (7.5K hrs XB/750 hrs PC). Started flying PC to use Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS/Pedals and wing with Power Play discord friends.

XBSX closed the graphics gap and I do have a group of pilots on XB that frequent my FC for Power Play and squadron BGS, so keeping both accounts active is easy. PC still has better graphics and a larger player base to coordinate operations support so it's becoming my go to gaming platform. The EDO GUI is also much better for trading and running missions, so I hope the wait for EDO on console is not too long. The last update appears to be running bug free on my PC so I'm more than encouraged.

And one detail, we don't even receive the Horizons updates from Update 6
They have to launch it yes or yes, since applying the logic, they could not merge oddysey with horizons by console users.

hmm, I must say I'm getting a bit fed up with all this "no news at this time" nonsense
especially now with this weeks combat CG showing such a disparity between horizons and odyssey
so with this weeks combat CG module reward being a top 25% affair it now brings this topic back up
I was on for around 5 hours in a high CZ and managed to scrape 29m
ground high CZs you could probably get that in an hour on a good run

how are we supposed to compete with that?

posted that in another thread and it just wound me up, so not only are they getting more content after release they also get the advantage in certain CG's
yet we are still told that Odyssey will come when they are "happy" with the pc performance but give no targets

at this point, if PC players are still unhappy with the game, get a refund. If no PC players are getting refunds, the game is fixed. It's time to start work on the console release otherwise ED will be dead on the console, not because Fdev didn't give us the update but because we all walked away.

They cannot afford to have another failed launch. It is not 'fixed' on PC yet. To bring it to console they first have to solve the performance issues or else it will fail as a launch. We on console will just have to be patient. We don't like it but they are going to fix it first on PC and then bring it to us.

If they brought it to console before the fixed it, they would have to bring multiple patches and each time you bring a patch to console it has to work through a Microsoft/Sony verification process to make sure it doesn't brick their hardware, it is much more difficult.

So no, they will not start work on bringing it to console until the fundamental game problems are worked out. They are not worked out yet.

every problem you just mentioned is covered under the xbox preview program of which Elite Dangerous and Odyssey is part. like when a lot of us bought Elite Dangerous on console it was in the preview program and as such, we knew it was unfished, will crash, buggy, and at times unplayable. we accepted this as part of getting a work in progress.

right now the console community is begging for proof out version is being scrapped and Fdevs complete radio silence and lack of any evidence of work on the console version isn't helping. more and more the performance problems are looking like it's down to the number of different PC rig setups that the game has to run on, not only in how powerful the PC its running on is, but also the countless different components in countless number of PC's. The consoles over last-gen are all roughly the same with mild upgrades, working on a smaller number of units with less variance in parts would not only be for efficient but would also make scaling up to the PC easier as they would have a stable foundation. which they don't have.

I get the whole "its a PC game first" thing, I don't agree with it but I get it. but now it about being fair and fixing not only the game but the community they have broken and the trust they have lost.

I continue to be amazed by the continued radio silence from FDev regarding consoles. I think most of us console commanders would welcome anything, even if it doesn't look good. We're grown ups and would understand. Behind closed doors at FDev I'm sure consoles are discussed, and maybe even they attempt to occasionally throw a version at a test console to see how it performs? So in that regard there would be news to share - hell, even if it is "consoles were discussed at the weekly team meeting". But no news at all? Nothing at all for the CMs to share? Seriously FDev, CMs, you must have something to share.

What silence?
They said several times they will resume work on Consoles when Odyssey on PC gets fixed.
Since we're slated to get Update 9 in early December - it's quite safe to assume currently they're still working on PC version getting fixed.

Also, whatever fixes they implemented in Odyssey by now, will still benefit the consoles version (i'm referring mostly to rendering pipeline fixes and AI pathing/fixes that were putting to trouble even the mightiest Ryzen 9 cpu's)

So, i'm curious about the announcement Arf will be making this Friday, as quoted:

End of Year Community Update: Arthur will be posting on Friday to share with you a look-back on the year of Elite, and what you can expect from the Community Team moving forwards into 2022.

I find it somewhat hypocritical that PC commanders were adamant about development updates, so much so that we now have them, but when consoles want an update on where we stand with the state of the game we are supposed to keep quiet and remember back five months ago when they told us they would get to us when they get to us. Most PC commanders wouldn't be content with sitting back and waiting for them to fix the issues in EDO, but expect us to be content with waiting for 5 months with no new update?

I guess the question I have is "What, if anything, is there to update?" FDev have said many, many times that their current focus is on patching up Odyssey on PC and when they have done that, they will shift their focus to consoles. As a console CMDR, you have to understand that every fix and patch on the PC version is a step towards console release, right? I do understand your frustration, though. As a three year XBox CMDR myself, I can't imagine still not having Odyssey...but...the incessant questioning and dooming from the console crowd is getting a bit grating. We've all been told, "Fix PC, then consoles." Until "Fix PC" has happened, there's no news on "then consoles." If "Fix PC" has happened and then there is still no news on "then consoles," then maybe, sure, have a go....but we're not there yet.

I'm with you and yes I think we all understand that progress on the PC side only improves what consoles may get if it's able to be released on consoles. I've said before that instead of ignoring the console community (yes aside from the repeated "no updates" answers from CM's) if they would address the console community directly by saying something along the lines of "we've made 'x' progress on EDO for PC and plan 'x' and 'y' further enhancements to the PC version before considering console development" these flareups from frustrated console commanders would likely be lessened. Currently, there is no benchmark that we've been told they want to reach before considering consoles again. Even something like that would help ease the community. I'm fine waiting, I've moved on to a couple of other games and have my CMDR parked at a station, my FC is decommissioned, and I'm just hanging out waiting to see if it'll be worth picking it up again.
