There is no question that gaming on consoles is a distant second to mobile gaming e in terms of revenue for game companies but it's silly to assume that Frontier missed the boat because their preferred platform to release games first on is PC.
Their preferred platform to release Elite Dangerous on first is PC - not all of their games.
Sales of all of their games have been underwhelming only on PC, though.
This consoleer would like to posit - based on the proven game sales figures relative to all platforms - that had Frontier targeted console as the lead development platform for Odyssey, it would've not only been delivered in a much more stable, functional and performant state (as you'd eliminate the endless combinations of CPU/GPU/resolution/O/S patch level, driver level, etc. etc. ), it would've also made them more money, in terms of both sales and revenue. Indeed, as the graphs show, XBox alone eclipses PC game sales for most of the major publishers, hence the potential sales opportunity is greater than double on XBox + PlayStation, than it is on PC.
Bearing that in mind, my anticipation is, given the current financial climate at Frontier, they may now have increased impetus to target console as a platform for Odyssey earlier than previously thought, and if they are smart and had the ambition and drive to do so, they would make a strategic decision to make console the lead platform for Elite, and maximise their retail opportunities via console, just as most of the leading software dev and publishing houses do already.
Edit: There, I at least tried to wander back towards the topic of main discussion...
