Console player advice please

I currently play on the XBox but want the VR experience so am considering a PC and Occulusand starting the game all over again but need advice, my router will be 20m away from where I William place a PC, will this be an issue? Can the game be played with an XBox Elite controller and VR OK? Do I need a monitor? Apologies for these simplistic queries but I'm not very PC literate, thanks

Hi,

If your router will be 20m from the PC, I'm assuming you are intending to use wireless, which should be fine in most cases but completely depends in the actual environment involved (anything causing interference, thick walls etc etc). A network cable connection is the best option if at all possible.

You can play on PC using an Xbox controller, wired only with the Elite controller unless you shell out for the Xbox wireless adapter for the PC (but that also has reports of people losing connection randomly). Newer Xbox controllers allow bluetooth connections as well apparently.

Yes you will need a monitor, or at least a TV to plug the PC into. The headset only gets put on once you launch a VR title.

No one can guess how well wifi works in your house, i use a cable to my gaming comp.

There are bindings for xbox controllers, cant see a reason for it not to work if you have a screen strapped to your face instead of sitting on your desk.

You kind of need a monitor do the windows things needed to install and start the game.

Ive got the gaming pc hooked to my tv and can start up steamvr from there and the use the built in vr desktop to do the rest.

Hey Meadows65 ... I made the exact switch to PC last month for the exact same reasons. It was hands down one of the best decisions ever. I bought a new gaming rig and Oculus and have been having a blast since. My PC is on the other side of the house and I have no issues picking up the wifi. I also use an Elite controller with no issues. I even added in some rudder pedals for more control and it's been great. I can do maneuvers I never dreamed of.

If if you do make the switch and have no intention of playing on your XBox account again Frontier will move the value of all your assets (value of ships and credits) over to your new PC account. Money is the only thing the can. I've, you'll lose all of your rank, faction rep and store purchases.

Hope me this helps a little. Good luck!

if wireless does not work there are always homeplugs!.

afaik you can use the same xbox control system on pc as you can on xbox... further more you can use TWO controllers if you want on the pc version - its how i play. i use a hotas in my ship and xbox 1 pad for srv. PC also has the advantage of voice attack and imo for the price i consider this almost a core module, both for practicality and immersion (very cool ordering shield cell, or chaff via voice and means you do not need to worry about bindings for them)

both the xbox 360 wireless adapter and the xbox 1 wireless adapter work perfectly on the pc and you can use the xbox 1 pad wired over usb...... if its the newer style of xbox 1 pad you can also use over bluetooth if your pc supports it afaik, tho that is not something i have tried (i use my wiimotes over bluetooth on pc however and they work well)

I play on PC with Rift using an Xbox One Controller and love it.

I'm using a wired connection, and while I have played a lot of Elite in PG and Solo wirelessly over a slow mobile hotspot, I'm not sure how good open would be over a older/slower wifi connection.

That said, the network connection should not affect your VR experience in Solo or PG imho.

Are you planning on buying a PC already built or do it yourself? I think jumping from console to PC-VR with no experience in PC gaming may have you a little overwhelmed.

You'll certainly need a monitor. You'll want to become familiar with terms and options around graphics, frame rates and measuring system performance in PC gaming. This will help you and others speak he same language when you run into issues and have questions.

It's a big step, but a grand one!

I jumped into PC VR from an xbox one, no issues at all, I bought an off the shelf Lenovo y700 desktop with an i5, gtx1070 and 16gig ram for £900 from curry's and it runs elite just fine (with a few settings tweaked). Its not difficult to get working and there are loads of posts on this forum that are helpful regarding settings etc. The xbox one controller settings are identical on the PC so you can use that (also if you are used to the xbox galaxy map then using the galaxy map is really easy in VR with the controller).
Go for it, I can't play it on the xbox anymore as it just feels wrong! I got frontier to transfer my assets which they did in 2 hours from my first request.
