Console Update

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.

Hi Lord Brebus first time caller long time listener,

Has Frontier considered discussing with MS the prospect of releasing EDO on Xbox cloud gaming so people on the lesser devices can enjoy still enjoy ED on console?

I look forward to you not replying.

Thanks and love you lots.

You have persuaded me... to not like it.

You were going to "like" Manticore's post and then changed yer mind when you saw mine? Wow! I didn't realise I could be that persuasive, even if it's in a negative way

If that's the case then just please ignore my posts and go ahead and "like" his post

Because I have wasted my time, as the game is no longer supported on my console but it is on the pc. FD will have to answer to this and my guess is they will ignore the claim, then by default the claimant will win..

So, do you take every company to court who stops development on a game you enjoy?

How many companies have you taken to court now and won?

Please, do let us know how your court case goes in this case. I'm sure we will all be waiting with bated breath.

I promise you FDev tried their best to get this done but just think about all the keybinds and trying to pack them all on a Xbox or PS controller. Can't be done.
of course it could. for one they could have used the second controller. how many ps/Xbox players only have one pad. and those who don't, it's easy enough to get one.

I haven't played in years due to the stagnant story and woeful lack of content over nearly a decade.

The developer blaming this lack of progress on console is disingenuous and hilarious to say the least.

They failed to do anything with the Thargoid story line, Guardians, formadine rift, the locked section of the gal map etc the list goes on and on and on.

No more galnet news.

They constantly added new methods of slowing down game play with repetitive games of hide seek. Found new and boring ways to make you do the same thing over and over again.

Frankly it's embarassing.

There's alot of faults here but I'll promise you it's not with console.

It's internal.

The game is a rotting corpse and will continue to be so until they hire a competent creative director and developers that want to be there.

The fact I can come back after FIVE YEARS and see that literally all they managed to add was a weak version of space legs that's a bug ridden disaster is pretty telling.

Cheers.

Seems to me like our wallets were very close to your heart. Especially when it came to funding the development of your PC version of the game. Thanks for stringing us along! Feels great to be tossed in the can Braben cheers.

I'd wager that's a good estimate. Closing the doors on console could be the warning flag to all PC players that the doors will be closing in general relatively soon (ie: a few years from now).

Think about it. Console players can still play Horizons in the same shared galaxy as PC players, that means the same background simulation. The only way that can continue going forward is if the PC version (Odyssey) doesn't change much at all from here on out, because if it did that would make it super hard to keep the console and PC (two different code branches) both linked to a single background sim.

Sure PC will go forward having Space Legs, but this feature has very little added gameplay value compared to what Horizons already includes. Space Legs is mostly foot combat with very little new "gameplay" for the core of ED, and I'm betting that's how it will remain.

One of two things will happen going forward:

1) The PC version (EDO) continues to get large amounts of new development, transforming & improving the game so much it makes keeping the Console version (EDH) linked to the background simulation impossible, thus FDev will eventually shut down the console servers completely.

OR

2) EDO gets very little new content from here on out and goes into "maintenance mode", thereby keeping the current EDO & EDH linked background simulation wise, so both versions of the game can stay online generating ARX revenue at very little cost to FDev. Elite Dangerous stagnates and slowly dies until FDev shuts the servers down one day for good.

Give how the game is over 8 years old now, and clearly there are code issues deep into the game making development extremely difficult, I feel option 2 is the most likely from here on out. Dropping console support could very well be a major step in this direction.
Shutting down ED Horizons means PC Horizons players get shut down as well.

out of curiosity how would people feel about an ED2 , start from scratch with current consoles and pc in mind.? I think those with a Horizons LTP would lose out as they never hit break even but other than that I do think starting from scratch may be the best way to go.

that said. Given FDs lack of interest with VR now I doubt it would support it so sadly (for me) I would not be along for the ride but it could solve most problems imo

Genuinely curious.. why are you even here? surely you have better things to do with your time than troll a forum for a game you don't even play?

The developer blaming this lack of progress on console is disingenuous and hilarious to say the least.

Did they ever actually say that?

They failed to do anything with the Thargoid story line, Guardians, formadine rift, the locked section of the gal map etc the list goes on and on and on.

False. The snail does move..

No more galnet news.

What's this then?

They constantly added new methods of slowing down game play with repetitive games of hide seek. Found new and boring ways to make you do the same thing over and over again.

All of life is repetitive. The question is which repetitive things do you enjoy.

Frankly it's embarassing.

It? Your post?

That's a whole lot of opinion, thanks for sharing (y) I'm sure someone will be along soon to offer you an egg.

For what the game cost to you, don't waste your time getting involved in lawsuits. Learn the most important lesson, never trust Frontier again and never buy any other of their products. It's the only language they understand (and many other game developpers).

The low number of participants in your well-intentioned thread seems to confirm my observations above: Very few people are actually interested in a constructive solution.
It takes time to cool down, more for some than others. It's the reason why said to keep the full migration offer open until Odyssey is rolled into the base game. It may take six months for someone to let it go, though for some that will be never, and that's just the way of people.
