Console Update

I remember someone pointing out the capabilities of the consoles both the previous gen and current gen, comparing TFLOPS of each to Odyssey and Horizons, and the conclusion was, for the One, One X, PS4 (that era), there was no way in hell to get Odyssey to run on them

then they looked at Series S/X, PS5, etc, and they said MIGHT, but even they doubted it.So honestly, unless they figure out how to optimize the code base between now and when ever this hypothetical announcement would happen, I doubt they would be willing to say ALL console development. They would have just said "We are stopping support for blank generation consoles and focusing on current gen." something like that.

So yeah, console ED is dead and it's not coming back. Jesus Christ I feel sick to my stomach.
It was me. I've posted an update there today, but they blocked the post.
Now we can move forward and see if they will really release many new thing to Elite.

Cheers

If it's not a technical issue, then it could be contractual in regards to Sony & Microsoft as mentioned a couple of times already.

"Rocket League, Destiny and every other game does cross save/play with this one simple trick, Find out why Sony/Microsoft hate it!" /s

Really? You think that's the reason?

Edit: Sorry to come across a bit terse Fizz.

"we launching for pc and consoles"
Then
"We have to postpone console launch indefinitely"
10 months later
"sorry, consoles are cancelled"

this right here folks is how you should NOT treat customers, if any of you ever own a company.
This is a genuine question, what should they have done?

Beyond completing development first before announcing it, I guess?

RIP Console players. And the way communication from Elite is, I dont hold out much hope on PC for the future to be honest.

I doubt vast majority of players, or even potential future buyers of ED on PC, either read these forums or other news about the game through other sources before they buy and play it.

I have never ever done that and I own 300+ games, have only visited forums/reddit (at very limited amount of topics) of 3 games on top of ED forums/reddit.

Pretty sure this is pure business calculation (and a effort to make ED on PC better), nothing more.

Hope account transfers from consoles to PC though, it would be reasonable enough for those that wanna continue their career in ED after consoles on PC.

Well, I can't say I'm surprised. Given that none of their patches delivered the massive performance improvements they had been hinting at, it makes a lot of sense not to port to console.

'course, that means I won't be holding my breath regarding further performance increases. I am unwilling to play without VR, and from what I've heard, my setup would be struggling (It's fairly beefy, with a 6900XT and a Ryzen 7 3700X, but I really like to jack up graphics settings). (Before somebody jumps me and pedantically claims that I very much COULD play, yes, of course I COULD. It's a matter of preference, and since I, nobody else, pays for my stuff, I decide what to use my money for. If FDev cannot deliver what I want, they don't get my dough. No hard feelings. They are a corporation, I am a customer. No more, no less. They don't owe me anything other than a working product, I don't owe them anything other than payment for the afore mentioned product (yes, I am aware that, in this case, we are talking about a software license. The principle, however, is the same, so we can ignore that).

@ Santa de Lapland

I am not convinced it's a move to improve gameplay on the PC. They simply decided to cut their losses. Nobody here can say how freed-up resources will be used. I am not optimistic, however, that they will be allocated to the future development of ED. Note: I am not claiming DOOM, I am simply being slightly pessimistic, and given how their numerous promises to vastly improve performance turned out, being pessimistic is better than to blindly believe in improvement...

I'm playing ed on linux using wine since end of 2018. It's steadily gotten better, I have an old i7 2600k and a newish gtx 1660ti. At the moment I run EDH at 1920 ultra with 1.5x ss. It runs really well, but I suspect there is a problem with galactic phenomena as that looks really strange, and I also suspect that some threat indicators on the hub aren't working right (but those are used by the game very seldom). Apart from that it works great. I also run EDO at 1920 high settings no ss, but the fps aren't really there yet. It works, but fps are often a bit sluggish on foot..
Thanks, my Linux rig is pretty high end so I'm not worried about performance, at least not with other games I play on it.

I guess I'll wait until a Steam sale and then if I feel like restarting pay the absolute minimum. I do not feel like rewarding this company any more than i have to, perhaps only buying Horizons if still available as I am interested in spaceships, not another FPS. If I want a FPS there are other games which are dedicated to it and do it way, way better.

I just realised why this announcement stung so much. Last night went to bed comfortably in the top 10% of the last Colonia Bridge CG. At work looked on Inara to find I was bordline in/out, got home logged in and found out no gold shiny for me, about 100 tonnes short by Inara's reckoning. Then I saw this thread...

Why would I want to have my thousand of hours of progress/my save moved to the PC? Is that a serious question?

I am happy to pay for it. Im not sure what you are failing to understand.
I do not understand why you are not happy that now fdev will release updates for the PC even better than before.
It is obvious that they took this step so that the players on the PC have the best game.

I'm extremely disappointed in Frontier as an Xbox Series X player. I actually discovered this game on console and had been patiently waiting for any new generation updates and, of course, waiting for Odyssey. I'm aghast that a developer would commit to the console community and make your game accessible (and for so long), only to struggle with the ability to roll out an expansion and then to renege on the console community as a whole. It speaks volumes about poor leadership, poor planning, poor execution and incompetence. How can cutting off ~677 million console gamers be a good business decision? It's such a shame for a game that had so much potential moving forward. I will forever have a bad taste in my mouth associated with anything Frontier and I can say for myself...that I will never play a Frontier game ever again. Best of luck with the PC ventures but I think what you have done to your loyal console community players is unforgivable. Any number of other development studios would not have accepted no for an answer and would have found a way to overcome whatever technical limitations they faced in order to provide a playable product to all their product lines. You've simply failed your commitment to the console communities in providing a product that you pledged to support. If you didn't have the capacity to provide a playable product(s) to console gamers, then you had no business launching it and committing to the community in the first place.

I feel doubly terrible for the players who have sank hundreds and thousands of hours into their console specific game only to realize that it was all for nothing and that there will be nothing to play for moving forwards. What a slap in the face.

Don't slander fdev! odyssey was a great addition. if it didn't live up to your expectations, that's your problem. just don't play it.
Its not slander if its true...it was widely publicised and the share price nose dived because of it. Are you seriously defending the quality of the product upon release. 11 updates needed to fix and a halt on consoles speaks for itself. Don't be deluded as even fdev admitted the issues.

Do you remember that game, that was released almost 9 years ago, at the end of the Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3 era? A year later, that game was released on Xbox One / PlayStation 4 and people just transfer their progress to the new version. Later, that game was released on PC.
In 2022, that very same game will be released on Xbox Series X / PlayStation 5 and people will transfer their progress (and everything bought for real money) once again to the new version.
Multi platform releases and long term support can be such a struggle.
If I only could remember the name of that game ...
It's not as old as you imagine, though I guess it's fair to say that it's not a new game - it was never available on PS3 or 360, it's not quite GTAV "old" 🤔😀 ...

But for the record, it came out first on PC in December 2014, then Xbox in June 2015, before finally coming to PS4 in July 2017...

All in, I'd say we're only at the mid point of the game and they should certainly have brought it out on "next gen" consoles by now, however they appear to have no plans for that 😐 .

Why would you want to transfer your account when you can just buy the PC version and not do anything stupid.

I am participating in this conversation in order to express my full support and approval of the actions of fdev, as well as to explain to this crowd of whiners that happened only for the better!
Because those accounts represent hundreds if not thousands of hours of investment into the game and not just credits but ARX purchases and limited time event items that CANNOT be replaced. I know it might seem a small thing, but I earned my Distant Worlds decals, I earned my Wolves of Jonai decal. And if Fdev puts in the "Expedition 4 Evelyn" decal into the game, I will have earned that too. The various things that our commanders can collect like these items represent momentos and badges of achievement of real stories of people and events.

And yes, you're god damn right I want that transferred if I have to move to PC. I'm already disappointed enough, and I'm trying to be reasonable in understanding there are real technical issues as to WHY this decision was made. But the last thing we need right now is someone coming in here and rubbing salt in the wound and telling us "Just forget it and start over." calling these people whiners and crybabies.

Who the hell do you think you are coming in here and casting these judgements?

What about "We are evaluating if we will launch Odyssey on consoles or not, we are not sure if it can be done, in the mean time we will focus on bringing the best experience we can to PC". Transparent, honestly honest, no lies, no promises they don't even know if they can keep.
